Media Player Classic plays choppy Nikon D90 video (but WMP works)

I'm trying to playback Nikon D90 videos with Media Player Classic, but I get choppy video. When I play the same file on Windows Media Player 9, it plays just fine. In case you're wondering, Nikon D90 video is 23.97fps (I believe, I don't think it's 24fps). MPC plays DVD's and my xvid rips just fine, some of which are 24fps.

I have a basic ffdshow set-up but I've disabled everything. I just have the OSD running to see what's going on. I also use ReClock. Both ffdshow and ReClock run whether I use MPC or WMP and they both have the same settings.

On MPC, the ffdshow OSD says "Decoder FPS" jumps back and forth between 0 and 60+ FPS. On WMP, the decoder FPS hovers around 20 (decimal places) FPS. The Movie FPS also jumps around on MPC (under 24) but stays at 24 with WMP. This has to be the source of my problems but I have no idea where to change this. I'm a neophyte when it comes to this sort of thing.

I have an AMD Phenom II 920 quad processor. I'm sure it's not a hardware issue. Any ideas on what I can possibly do? Thanks.

Nikon D90 video is exactly 24.000 fps, according to ReClock and ffdshow Info & CPU. But frame rate is totally irrelevant to choppiness. Huge fluctuation of fps on ffdshow OSD is not the cause but a result of choppiness.

The real cause of the choppy playback in MPC-HC (why not use HC?) is the default source/splitter filter. Use Haali Media Splitter instead (reinstall it and select "AVI" at the installation and uncheck "AVI" in MPC-HC > Options > Internal Filters > Source Flters) and use ffdshow Video Decoder (will be used automatically unless you changed the merit value). I see perfectly smooth playback of D90 videos with MPC-HC (or any other player)+Haali Media Splitter+ffdshow Video Decoder, whether the video card refresh rate is 24 Hz or 60 Hz.
