I did not see a noticable improvement but if I get a chance I will put the BD30 back in my system to do a comparison. You could order the BDP-83 from Oppo or one of the authorized dealers some that offer free shipping. That way you could see first hand if the difference would be noticable.

I had a BDP-83 when they first came out but did not keep it as I did not see a difference with BR. But I think it would be best to try one in your system.

And what size is the Plasma? How far do you sit?

g_bartman has a projector, so he could very well be viewing on a 80-100"+ screen, which makes scaling performance much more noticable. Also, Plasma's are a little noisier (grainier?) than LCD's and I think DLP front projectors also, which could also mask detail differences....

I have a 50" and sit about 8' away. I'm not sure of the PQ differences between LCD and DLP when compared to plasma. Of course a much larger viewing area will show the positives and negatives of the source. Although I find the PQ of my plasma to be quite good with BR or good HD cable channels. I think in the end the best way for g_b to know for sure is if he tries the BDP-83 in his system.

Ah, not bad. That's about 2.20x screen widths away. PJ owners tend to be much closer (relative to screen size) than that.

I'm about 9ft from 80", about 1.54x screen widths back. That's with a 1080p DLP PJ.

When I only had a 480p PJ I sat at least 2x screen widths back.

In any case, the screen size, resolution and sitting distance is a huge factor in being able to see the small differences a player like the Oppo improves on. I also have a nice 1080p 32" LED LCD that I also sit 9ft from, and I couldn't see any difference between the Oppo and other players on that.

I suspect a lot of that playstation poster's comments about not noticing any differences between PS3 and Oppo probably has a lot to do with the above factors I've mentioned. I've noticed that he hasn't responded to my questions about display size, model, sitting distance, etc. ---all big factors.

Its 30 days for returns. Below is a link to Oppo's return policy. I believe Oppo will pay for return shipping but not the original shipping. So if you ordered the BDP-83 and decided to return it you would only be out the original shipping charge.

My display is a Samsung LN52A650, and I sit about 10.5' from it. I currently have a Panasonic BD35 blu-ray player, but was thinking of upgrading to a new player. I'm certainly interested in the Oppo because of all the excellent reviews, but I was wondering if I would really notice a difference between it and a less expensive player based on my display and viewing distance? Upscaling is definitely important as I have a buttload of standard def DVDs.

I want 3D, and I'm going to have a display in the near future.

I'm worried about DVD upscaling on the BD-C7900 since I love the Oppo upscaling. Will it be a huge difference? Does anyone know the upscaler that the BD-C7900 is using?

I'd really love to find another Anchor Bay Blu-Ray player that isn't crazy expensive.

I did a little searching and could not find such a conversation so here goes.

If I buy the BDP-83SE instead of the BDP-83, what makes the SE worth twice the price?

It is not twice the price: 899 vs 499. The SE is only worth the price difference if you need superior ANALOG audio output. It is mainly aimed at people who want to use it with older non-HDMI receivers/processors or people who want to use it for better analog performance for CDs, DVD-As and SACDs. If you are not one of these people, there is no reason to consider it. If you are one of these people, it is worth every penny of the price difference.

Note that we are talking about the Analog audio outs. If you only intend on getting your audio out via digital (hdmi or optical/coax), then there is absolutely no reason for the SE model.

The SE has upgraded DAC's and upgraded analog circuits, all of which are not used when using hdmi/optical/coax for audio.

I am deciding between the Panasonic BD 85 and the BDP-83.
I just need to decide how much I want to spend.
By the way, I CURRENTLY have a Denon 3805, Outlaw 770 amp. I'll be upgrading to a new receiver/pre-pro in the near future.

The BDP-83 has been discontinued if you don't already know. There is some old stock out there I believe. It's been(being) replaced by the new BDP-93.

It looks like Oppo has some refurb 83's in stock at a lower price....

Wait for the 93. I had the Panny 55 and now I have the 83. To me the Panny pales in comparison. It's faster, has a better picture and better menu then the Panny does. At least the 55 compared to the Oppo 83.

It is no doubt for the money the Oppo is one of if not the prefered player out there.

Does it have any MAJOR weakness? What, if anything, comes close in BR and DVD video quality as well as CD and SACD sound?

What's a major weakness to one isn't to another person. All I can say is the thing that bugs me the most is it's FF/RW function is about as bad as it gets with DVD's and most blu rays. With blu's it depends if the disc is java enabled or not, and I'm not quite sure if all blu players react the same regarding blu discs, but the for sure all DVD's will not FF/RW smoothly or quickly on the Oppo 83/83SE players. Oppo says it's a limitation of the video chips they use, so it can't be changed with a FW update.

That may or may not matter to you.

People want it to be a media server and it really isn't. People want online video streaming, which it doesn't have. And 3D.

All BR players produce very similar images from film-based BR sources.
