Thanks.

Personal experience. I have it in a cabinet, but I had to remove 2 layers of shelves so that it gets enough cooling.

Its not a bad thing, just that we dont want to overheat it

I'm considering getting either the Onkyo 607 or the Pioneer Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K. What advantage would I have if I got the Onkyo?

Better specs.

The distortion on the Onkyo is less than the Pioneer.
You get more HDMI ports including a front mounted port.

Here's a good thread

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1144467

In another thread someone read the Pioneer manual and it listed .2 % distortion versus the Onkyo's .08.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...7#post16327817

Twice the distortion of its 1018 predecessor and the Onkyo.

I was looking at the Pioneer but the performance decrease turned me off.

Did you read their review? They couldn't notice much with the PLIIz and a few other minor issues (upscaling if that's important to some). Overall, they liked it and thought the sound quality was excellent. They gave it 3.5 stars so I don't know how that translates into them not liking it.

One awesome feature of this unit is that when I turn off or on the TV, the AV receiver turns off or on as well. This is due to the HDMI connection. Most people know this but if you haven't been connecting Via HDMI, you wouldn't have this feature.

I gotta try this. I have a new Sammy TV. Think it will turn the Onkyo off?
It should work with any HDTV that supports HDMI-CEC.

I figure my next HDTV will support it as well as the next Blu-ray player that I purchase as well.

Interesting, but I don't quite understand this feature (and I don't have an Onkyo yet, so I can't try it out). Why does the receiver turn off when the TV is turned off? For example, say I had my DirecTV receiver tuned to one of the 800 channels that plays XM music. What if I wanted to turn off the TV but still listen to the XM station? Am I misunderstanding this feature?

There is a setting in the receiver to enable this feature. If it is not enabled, then you would have to set up a universal remote to power off all of your devices at once.
I've tried to use this feature with my Mitsubishi set and it just doesn't ever work. It'll turn the TV off but when I turn it back on the TV won't find the HDMI port correctly and won't switch to the HDMI at all.

I use my receiver to play music from digital cable with the TV off anyway so it's probably not something I would leave on all the time. Still, the universal remote included doesn't have an 'all devices off' button so pressing the power buttons 3 times to get everything shut down is annoying.

The good news is that I have the 607 in my trunk. The bad news is that I'm at work! I don't know if I'm going to have time to set this up tonight but I'm hoping it works out. Hopefully the instructions aren't too brutal. I don't want to learn how to decipher NASA launch codes if I don't have to. Anybody have input on how long it took them to go through initial setup?

If you run Audyssey and it's a first time go (distances & levels pass the 'common sense' test), then maybe 20-25 minutes (connecting wires on the back, Audyssey calibration, input assignment).

If you haven't run your cables yet, then that'll depend on your proficiency.

I have similar, but opposite problem. When I went direct from my cable box to my Sony Bravia previously the TV would show SD signals in 4:3 format and autoswitch for HD signals to 1080i to wide screen. Now, the Onkyo seems to force full/widescreen regardless of SD or HD signal.

I would like to keep the SD signals not stretched and deal with the black bars, but when I try to change to video settings on the receiver, I get the same "Not Available" display. I can change the settings for other video signals, but not the cable box.

Wonder how mine defaults to full screen for SD/HD and lgc's defaults opposite?
you didn't list which stb you have.the 8300 has a hidden setup to where I have 480p,720p&1080i as my output.I use the stb remote's # button to manually change it's output.I was under the impression the 607 would automate this function.I am hoping others will respond.I'm not sure if this is a warranty issue or my setup?

I have a new 46" panny 85U + ps3 + cable dvr from comcast. I'm not able to get this to work. Could you let me know where the settings would be?
panasonic calls it "ez sync" look in the tv's manual or their site.stb on hdmi input 3,607 calls it "RIHD"page 82 of the manual.also make sure the panny's speaker output is set to home theater.if not every time you turn on your tv,it will default back to it's speakers.are your cables 1.3a compliant? there could be some settings in the stb as well.

Panny calls it viera link

Yes, my cables are 1.3a compliant, or so i believe. Picked them up from monoprice.

I did enable RIHD. Will check some more i guess

How is Onkyo getting away with a 7.2 spec on the 607?
Ok, my OSD for setup is gone again! This is the second time in the last 1 week

Last time I had to reset the unit to bring it back. Its not like I changed settings or anything. OSD just disappeared for the setup menus

need some help...

I just got the 607 and hooked it up and the sound quality is great, but i keep getting a randon clicking sound from the reciever- it is the same clicking sound you would get if you were to switch inputs. It will just randomly click while it is on. I'm not sure if this because of something I'm not doing right or if it is the 607.

Any ideas...?

Its probably switching the audio type.

Is it happening at particular times?
Yeah, sometimes it clicks when switching to a commercial. It also will just do it at random times though. I was playing music from my PS3 today and during play it would just click. It will also do it during watching tv. I think you are on the right track when you said it was switching the audio. Is this something i need to set up on the OSD?

The best way to notice is by keeping the display on the unit to where it shows whats the audio signal.

If you're watching a HD show and a commercial comes on, the commercial is not in 5.1D, so it switches something. I'm not sure what it switches or how to tell it not to.

Might have to do with preset listnening modes.
Yes, preset listening modes can change based on the incoming audio format per input source so if the format on the audio changes from 2 channel to 5.1 channel back to 2 channel it could easily apply different presets which could account for the 'click.'

I personally haven't really heard any clicks like that but I haven't set any presets for my TiVo HD or my PS3.
After reading the last couple of threads, I get how it could click between switching audio formats (i'm assuming this is normal and happens to everyones reciever) but how come it clicks when i play music from my PS3 in mid song.

Also, thanks for the info. The only thing Onkyo support told me was to reset the reciever and if that didn't work i should return it.
Defenitely return it. I dont have clicking sound in the middle of audio while either my ipod is connected, or while i'm listening to the music stations on the comcast DVR.
Having to return the reciever i'm a little skeptical of getting another 607. I was considering the Denon 1909. Is this a good choice?

Just looking for a few opinions...?
The video button on the remote when pressed, always says not available. What gives? is it because the incoming is either the PS3 via hdmi or the cable/dvr box on hdmi?

I asked this question in the 606 thread too but I just want to be 100% positive...I am about to purchase this receiver and I was wondering does this have multi-zone capabilities? Say if I wanted to have a 5.1 set-up in my living room and another 2 speakers in my garage, could I set this up with this receiver without an another amp? I am pretty new to the whole receiver and audio world, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, you can do 5.1 in zone 1 and have zone 2 with 2 channels of amplified power.
