Hey guys,

Just set up my new 607 last night. Everything works great, but my roommate noticed something weird. When you change the channel from a HD channel to a non-HD channel the tv screen goes black like its changing inputs for a second then goes to the channel. It will show the input on the screen that the tv is on then quick go to the channel. I never had this happen before with my old receiver. It only does this when changing from non hd to hd or hd to non hd channels. Everything is hooked up via HDMI. Is there a setting on the receiver to change this or is this something to do with my cable box because im using HDMI?
I would suspect your cable box is set to output each channel in it's native resolution, which would force an hdmi resync when you changed between hd<->sd channels. You'll probably want to set your cable box to only output 720p or 1080i.

Makes sense. Any idea how i could do that?

I'd search these forums for you cable box model number. They are all different, but it's either in the normal menu, or a hidden menu somewhere.

Hi, I recently bought a new central column (NC444 Yamaha), and the old Central went back and does the EX. My question is this - when watching Blu-ray with Dolby True HD or DTS-MA and switch Onkyo the EX mode, for EX column activation, reduces the sound quality? Somehow affect it? or simply Onkyo does the mix of rear speakers and sends it to the column EX? Does it change anything in the rear columns?

I'm looking for a fan for my sr607.
Is there a way to power the fan with the sr607 so that the fan start/stop when I power on/off the sr607?

If not, what do I have to buy to get this function?

Thanks

You can use a smart strip likes this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-Pr.../dp/B0006PUDQK

to turn the fan on/off along with the SR607. The SR607 would be the controlling device. There are many variations of this smart strip to choose from.

I've tried to build up a cooler-system for my sr-607.
I've a 12V fan (1.1W) connected to a 320V->12V(20W-70W) trafo->power supply, but I can't make the fan to work.

What am I missing?

Also see the cheaper manual controls on the right column. They have fan-less power supplies also.

Edit 1: So the heat from the 607 controls it.

Edit 2: Antec makes a complete Veris cooler (I like mine), but I use a SmartStrip to control it. If you also need an APC to protect it, this is just a little more:

Nothing really.

Use an volt-meter on the power supply output and make sure you are getting 12v DC. Watch your polarity. Try another fan or try a light. Fan or PS might be bad.

Thanks guys, got it to work.
I'm placing the fan on the top over the sr-607.

Which part of the top is most important to cool down? (Where should I place the fan).

Good work.

The hot-est part ... maybe the main heatsink. Actually, as long as the fan is venting or pulling the hot air out of the cabinet as a whole ... I think you will be amazed how much cooler it runs ... even driving many large speakers, cranked up.

Maybe mount with pieces of double-sided foam tape. You can try different placements. I personally don't think it will matter much ... it will work fine mostly anywhere on top.

Usually the back right hand corner is the hottest part.

hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong section, i have some questions about my onkyo sr607 i bought the system back in may but the thing is i didnt have the speakers/ setup ready, so yesterday i walked in electronic express i know the manager of there, he gave me the 7.1 speakers on the demo shelf, i asked him if he would sell them to me for 150 just the speakers and sub he did, finally when i came home and hooked it up, after few good hours of running hot in my tv stand,( open top heat wasnt the problem). by the time i fixed all my menu setups and finished the mic setup and stuff all sudden the receiver hit the red flash on standby i unplugged everything including the speaker wires and sub connector. then i turned it back on it was ok, i finally turned it off and woke up today after long night of trying fix it and decide it to enjoy it for a couple of hours before work.

to my happiness the onkyo (sr607 recivier just did not turn on, i put it on the air conditioner it god pretty cool and i finally plugged it back in and boom... nothing.... still red flashing light, i dont get it the system has only been on for 3 hours how can it already break on me? i called electronic express ( where i bought the recivier from and they told me is not fried is just the protection mode going on, he asked they can't change it back because of 30 day only policy (electronic express ) he said but onkyo has one year warrenty, my question to you guys is there anyways i can fix this problem without have to going to go through all this warrenty crap? i google for about 3 hours last night notice some of this forum users had same problem with a different model which i tried the procedures but nothing helped.

Make sure you don't have any shorts in your speaker connections. If any bare wires are touching (exposed metal) that could be shorting and sending your receiver into protection mode. Otherwise I think warranty service might be your only option.

I've had my SR607 for a while and have had a problem that has annoyed me, but it wasn't a big deal. I want to fix it...

The situation is this. I have a Logitech Harmony remote and when I press the "Watch TV" button, the TV powers up (Panasonic Plasma TC-P54G10), the cable box powers up (Motorola Verizon FiOS HD box) and the SR607 comes up. Everything is connected via HDMI.

Initial sound is through the TV only. It is not until I press VOLUME UP or VOLUME DOWN that the TV goes black and the receiver takes over and the sound is routed through the 5.1 speakers. After that, all sound is through 5.1 speakers and life is good.

The problem is that sometimes the volume is turned up when I power everything down. So, next time I power things up, the TV is blaring and scares the crap out of whoever just turned things on. This happens for all services (Xbox, Blue Ray, etc) not just the cable box.

Thoughts?

The TV going black is a sign of a new HDMI handshake. Maybe try setting up you Harmony to power the devices in a different order. Some people even program time delays between devices powering up through their harmonies. Those types of issues are better suited to discussion in a Harmony thread.

Somewhere in the 607's settings you can change your start-up volume preferences. It sounds like currently you have it set to use the same volume that was set when you turned the 607 off. Alternately you can set a default starting volume that will be used every time the receiver is turned on.

A bad cable, wire or speaker is most likely. Does it do it with nothing connected (only headphones using FM tuner)?

Check your AC Power.

Try it will a device that has a real line-level output (like CD or DVD player). Don't try with portable MP3 players until you are sure it works otherwise.
mp3? i dont know if is my wires because electronic gave me some short wires and i had to use my samsung 5.1 speaker wires... i cut the tip on each side and twisted the copper.

Hi bltst2, check Panasonic HDMI-CEC Control (Viera Link) and turn this feature to "Off" and see if this solves the problem.

I'm going to to have to call them because I took a gamble and bought a refurbished 607 for my secondary room and as soon as I hooked it up, cut on my 360 and everything sounded great, played Street Fighter for 2 minutes and it cut off, and then I got a blinking red light. I really started to not buy it because it's refurbished, and since my 606 bit the dust after a year, I didn't want to give Onkyo another chance, but, since it came with a 1-yr warranty, and I bought an additional 3 year one, I took a shot.

I'm not going to be happy if they expect me to ship it back to them, especially since I just got it, hooked it up, and 10 minutes later, it's acting up. They are not open on the weekends, so, will have to call them 1st thing Monday morning. Maybe they will feel sorry for me and give me a new one. I doubt it though, or maybe just tell me to keep this one, and ship me another one.

I also ordered a RC-180, thinking about cancelling that one and giving another brand a try.

Update this morning tried again....and it did it again. I tried to watch a Bluray movie and it did the same thing. The only time it will not cut off and have the blinking red light is when I watch my satellite dish.

I am absolutely at my wits end with this damn receiver, can someone please help me?

On only *one* of my inputs, I can't get any subwoofer output. Nor can I access the Speaker Settings menu (it skips from 1 to 3, Speaker Settings is 2). Nor will it let me select ANY listening mode other than "Stereo". This is a Mac Mini hooked up via regular analog RCA cable to the CBL/SAT input.

I have read the manual, I have searched online, and I cannot find any explanation for this. Supposedly, with analog audio inputs, all of those functions should be accessible. I have run Audyssey and my other inputs sound great -- the TiVo and Blu Ray player (both on HDMI), and on those inputs I can access all available settings and specify Listening Modes. On my CBL/SAT input, using analog, I cannot, and I get zero bass in the subwoofer. Just for fun, I connected the Mac Mini via an optical cable, and had the same result (with the addition of "PCM" being displayed on the LCD screen).

What the heck is going on with this thing?

Last night, for no apparent reason, my 607 decided to quit showing its display (the receiver display). All other functions appear to be working as normal, but I tried to revive the display to no avail. I tried the dimmer setting, switch audio modes (so it wasn't on pure audio), and even a reset by pushing the vcr and standby buttons simultaneously. Nothing has worked.

This receiver is only ~8 months old. I'm hoping this is a simple fix. Otherwise, I'll be without TV while I ship this off to be repaired/replaced.

TIA!

As I recall, I'm using CBL/CAT for my HTPC (Windows running MediaPortal). I'm using Optical SPDIF. Sub is working. All the listening modes are there ... I know because some Divx and other AVI is only stereo and I like to matrix that out to something like NEO6.

Try a "normal" device (DVD player etc.) on that input. If you can't get that to work, you might have to try the Master Reset procedure.

geez. just bought a refurb 607 off onkyo's website and wondering if i made a bad decision. lol.

on the sub line out, i'm guessing i run an RCA Patch cable from the 607 to the powered sub right?

If the reset didn't help, unfortunately I think shipping off for repair is your only option.

so are there any tips or tricks for being a new 607 owner? anything particular to do with the AVR itself?

edit: I'm only using OTA antenna running to my panny plasma. Can/how should I split the antenna source so I can plug it into the the FM Source on rear of 607? Will the ohms from the antenna match the 607 (FYI, it's a normal outdoor antenna mounted in the attic with normal coax cable).

TIA

Question on the EQ: I have ran the Audyssey EQ. However, I prefer to have the Sub's 160hz bumped up a few levels which can only be done in Manual mode. When I power off then back on the EQ is back to Audyssey. Is there any way to have the 607 remember the Manual setting or do I have to disable Audyssey altogether. If so, how do I disable Audyssey short of doing a factory reset? Thanks

Just ran Audessey with my equipment below and had some questions....
1)Does adding another sub(ESW-8)to a 5.1 setup make a difference?
2)Here are the settings Audessey did for my speakers
Frts,Center, and Surrounds at 40hz. LPE at 100hz. Is this normal??
3)the level calibration was set as..
Left -6.0db
Center -8.0db
Right-7.0db
SR-5.0db
SL-5.0db
Sub-15.0db...I set it to -2.0db
Again, are these normal settings?? The bass just didnt seem "booming"to me compared to my ESW-8... Any advice is appreciated and Thanks for helping a newbie...
