Hello,

Need some help. I am running the following system:
MB: Asus m3a78-em
Processor: amd anthlon 5600+
Optical: LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray/ hd-dvd combo
Vista x64
Windvd 9 Plus
AV Receiver: Onkyo 806

All works fine and have it connected via HDMI to receiver. Now I want to play MKV files and am having a hell of a time. Is there away to setup Windvd 9- plus to play MKV files in surround? If so, what are the steps that I need to follow? Thanks for your help

AFAIK WinDVD does not support MKV playback. It's not in the media files accepted when you choose to load a media file. Switch to MPC-HC pr TMT 3.

MPC-HD OR TMT3

MPC-HD is a free media player and TMT3 Is TotalMovie Theater 3 from arcsoft I think.

Ok, I tried to install MPC. All works but somehow it creates confilcts with powerdvd (i.e., no surround any more). I restored my system and have no longer MPC installed and all works fine. However, is there a way to install MPC so that it doesnt affect powerdvd? Also, can I play MKV in MPC with surround sound?

Thanks a lot

Which PowerDVD? 7.3, 8 or 9?

No problem. What audio track do your MKV's have, AC3, DTS or FLAC? For AC3/DTS, just select pass-through in the default AC3 decoder. To get surround sound from FLAC, use AC3Filter or ReClock (with madFLAC of course). Either of them has an AC3 encoder and you will get surround sounds.

Currently I use Powerdvd 9. The MKV files are marked as AC3 X264. Please note that I have it all conected via HDMI to my receiver including sound.

"Installation" (what does that mean?) of MPC-HC (why not use "HC"?) never affects any other application. MPC(-HC) is a stand-alone application (so you don't have to "install" it; place it on a folder and you can use it immediately) and it never changes any part of the registry (except for its own key). PowerDVD 9 uses its own filters/MFC components and will not be affected by other players. ("Codec pack" is an exception; I recommend never install any kind of codec pack.)

Make sure you select PowerDVD 9 > Configuration > Speaker environment: "Use HDMI (current Vista setting)" and Output mode: "Non-decoded Dolby Digital/DTS audio to external device". If Output mode is "PCM decoded by PowerDVD", then you will never get surround sounds whatever HDMI device you use. (That's the biggest bug of PowerDVD 9 and is the main reason why many folks in this forum are asking a refund.)
