I've had a little bit of listening time now on a refurbished (looks brand new to me) 2100 preamp from Audio Advisors, and wanted to share my thoughts on this unit with you all.
My equipment consists of a Denon AVR-3805 (which I'm using as a pre-pro), an Oppo 83SE player and a Parasound 5250 Amp. I have Polk LSiM 703 bookshelf speakers on Skylan stands in an untreated living room. Two channel listening was through the Denon Pure Audio until I got the 2100.
First impression of the 2100 is WOW! What immediately stands out is the clarity. Not bright by any means, just more substance to the music. I thought the Denon sounded pretty good. I'm finding out I was missing a lot!
My first test was a Diana Krall cd. Her voice is crisper and she has moved forward in the sound stage. I also noticed John Clayton's bass play was more defined. Bass notes in spots I didn't hear before. Then I listened to a DVD-A (Best of Seal 1991-2004) which includes his hits in a 2 channel acoustic format. Again his voice was more forward and had a cleaner / crisper sound to it. I listened to The Who (Tommy) and focused in on Keith Moon's play. Heard drum hits that the Denon wasn't delivering on. Individual hits of the stick rather than a smear. Overall I'm very impressed with the sound.
What didn't work out was tying my sub in with the 2100. I don't really need a sub with the LSiM 703's, but thought I would see how it sounded. I have a SVS PC-Ultra. Muting the 2100 causes a VERY loud thump on the sub. I e-mailed Parasound about this.
Within 30 minutes I received a reply from Richard. Said he knows of one other report with a SVS sub doing the same thing due the subs circuitry but doesn't have a fix for it. He even offered to work out something on a Halo P 7 for me which doesn't have this issue with the SVS sub (how's that for service!) Though much appreciated, I ended up declining his offer as I'm fine keeping the sub on HT duty.
I'm very happy I jumped into the preamp world for 2 channel listening. I didn't realize how much music I was missing. Thanks to Parasound for great products & customer service.
