Need Help with calibration for PS3 for movies and games

Hey guys this is the first time I have posted a forum on this site, so I don't know if this is the correct section to post it in.

I have a PS3 and a Samsung LN40a650 LCD HDTV and I was trying to calibrate it with my DVE Blu ray calibration and I am confused as to what settings I should use for my PS3 for gaming and movies. I have heard that YCb is the best for movies with super white on. And that RGB is used for gaming but I can't figure out whether I should use Limited or Full because when I set it to Full on the PS3, the grayscale on the calibration disc is the same as YCb except for the last bars on the white and black side are clipped. But they look identical and when I play movies on RGB FULL they look the same. But if I set it to RGB limited, the grayscale gets bright and blacks look gray and the last two bars are still clipped. And I have read from experts that you are supposed to use RGB limited for games but I also have downloaded some HD movie trailers on Playstation Network and when I set it RGB limited the picture looks washed out and has gray black. The trailers I think use RGB by default so I can't set it to YCb. So if I use RGB Full the trailers look much better and the blacks are black. SO if set it to RGB full for games and trailers and YCb for movies, the calibration from the disc equals the same (which is also close to CNET calibration for this TV). But if I use Limited and then do the Calibration results are completely different and not close the CNET calibration. So if I am supposed to use limited for games and YCb with Superwhite On for movies, I would have to change the settings each time I switch between playing a game or movie. So should I just leave it on RGB full for games or is there something that I am missing. By the way I am using and HDMI cable.

To summarize
YCb with superwhite on = RGB full in calibration settings (close to CNET) – movies and trailers look identical in both modes

The above setting make RGB limited look washed out with gray blacks. When you calibrate these settings it does not equal to the calibration of YPB and it makes way dark on the grayscale and movies have black crush on them.

So what is the best option because I keep hearing you are supposed to use RGB limited for games but for me that would mean I would have to change the settings when I switch between movies and games.
PLEASE HELP!

Did you make sure that you are matching the source when comparing???

If you use RGB FULL the TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL should be at NORMAL.

If you use RGB LIMITED the TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL should be at LOW.

When you did that then you compare and see the result on your calibration disc.

When unmatched like for example RGB FULL with TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL at LOW it will crushed blacks.

When RGB LIMITED with TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL at NORMAL it will washed out the image and blacks become gray instead of black.

After you done that, there are some people saying that the PS3 and 360 don't map the video levels correctly when using RGB FULL (PS3) and EXPANDED REFERENCE LEVEL(360) supposedly. So they say to just use RGB LIMITED (PS3) and EXPANDED REFERENCE LEVEL (360) with TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL at LOW.

Now for the YCbCr versus RGB, Kaki has found that he gets better calibration setting on the 360 when using YCbCr (specifically YCbCr709 HDMI Color Space). Regardless if games are made in RGB through these TVs with these consoles so far it has been shown run best at YCbCr.

For movies it really just better for YCbCr than RGB since we all know movies all use YCC standard than the RGB which is really for PC.

For PS3 turn on super-white and YCbCr on where it says blu-ray/dvd option. Too bad on the PS3 it only does YCbCr for blu-ray/dvds and goes back to rgb for games.

On the 360 you can have it to be YCbCr for both games and movies. For 360 use YCbCr(709) and put the reference level at standard.

When I use RGB limited with HDMI black level at low, the grayscale equals the same as RGB Full with HDMI black level at normal. So should I just use RGB Full with HDMI black level at normal for games or RGB limited with HDMI black level at low or would it make no difference?

thanks for replying

when you said to put it on standard reference level for YCb for xbox 360, should I keep hdmi black level at low or normal for both movies and games on xbox 360

Like I said before the point of using RGB FULL with TV NORMAL is because it would allow you to see 0-255 video levels but the problem was that it really was no difference and even worse was that the systems were sometimes not properly mapping (16-235) 16 to 0 for blackest black and 235 to 255 for the whites.

To be on the safe side and since it doesn't equal better either just use RGB LIMITED with TV HDMI BLACK at LOW.

Also for PS3 you should get better results using YCbCr so turn it on for blu-ray/dvds and turn on super-white. Now the problem is that I don't see an option for YCbCr for gaming on the PS3 so I guess it goes back to RGB for gaming. Up to you to decide on what to do if you want to use RGB for movies just to have a calibrated setting that would work for games also.

On the 360 one has the option to have YCbCr for both movies and games so if you get that also then better to use YCbCr709.

Hope that helps...

On the 360 use YCbCr HDMI Color Space setting (709) and then put the reference level at standard. The TV HDMI Black Level will be set automatically and it will be grayed out.

When the TV HDMI BLACK LEVEL is grayed out and you can't change it it means that the source is sending out an YCbCr signal so you don't have to worry about that.

TV HDMI BLACK is open when the source sends it an RGB signal.

Whatever you use for movies use it for games when talking about matching the source like Normal with Expanded reference level(360) or RGB FULL(PS3) or LOW with Standard reference level(360) or RGB LIMITED(PS3).

thanks for clarifying; it makes much better sense now
