'Southland' on TNT HD - Page 11

Ben stepping up was a development. Chicky told him he should do it...and Dewey confronted Cooper last week. Should be interesting to see how they end the season WRT his addiction/pain.

Poor Sammy. This crazy woman puts a "find a friend" app on his phone. Oi. At least he didn't melt down. Maybe he's on the way back up mentally?

Southland definitely pulls off the shootouts real well. Between the bank robbery scene earlier this year and the shootout at Lydia's house last year...this show does intense gun scenes very well. Procedurally it seemed odd that they were the only 2 cops there for the whole scene/shootout but boy was that intense.

I love Southland's dark twists. That Sammy's unborn child gives him a permanent connection to his horrible wife, or maybe ex wife by now, is heartbreaking. She is dumb and clueless but a monster nonetheless.

The weird dynamic of Lydia developing a romantic interest in Ochoa's son is another slightly creepy but interesting development, and Cooper's free fall into drug addiction is another. Anyway, Southland is one of my two favorite shows on TV right now. The only other show I think is in the same world is Justified.

TV Notes
Report: 'Southland' Likely to Be Renewed
By Robert Seidman, TVbytheNumbers.com - March 7th, 2011

TNT is on the verge of renewing Southland according to Variety.

The cable drama is set to end its third season Tuesday the first 13 episodes were split into two seasons and with stellar critical support and ratings that are nowhere near cable's best, but solid and consistent enough for the Turner net to tolerate, all indications are the skein will be making a return engagement. TNT is likely to make an announcement in the near future.

The story notes that procedural shows are big profit generators for TNT. Southland is produced by Warner Bros, which shares a corporate parent with TNT.

NBC renewed Southland after a brief first season and then famously canceled the show before airing an episode of the second season.

Very happy to hear. 'Southland' is right up there with 'Justified' and 'Sons of Anarchy' as my favorite shows.

Can't wait for tonight's episode.

I hope we get some "closure" with Ben and John. That is, if Ben will be on his own next year and no longer rides with John.

It would be nice to see John get the surgery he needs for his back as well.

Well the title of tonight's episode is "Graduation Day" and John said in the last episode that Ben's probation period is almost up.

Great finale! I really hope this gets at least one more season.

Definitely a lot of storylines to start a new season with...or ways to move characters off the show:

-Does Cooper kick his habit and get his back tended to and return to the job?
-Does Ochoa stay with Adams?
-Does Sammy regain his focus and can he keep it together?
-Seeing Sherman in the car with Sammy and Sherman smiling as the car drove off left me thinking that Sherman is on his way to being a solid cop--but now he's got some more baggage to deal with as far as handling Sammy
-When Dewey left the druggie on the bench---did he finally realize he can't save everyone (i.e. her, Cooper, etc...)
-Will Chickey make the move to metro?

Great finale. The car chase and the foot chase/scuffle on the roof were, once again, INTENSE...this show does it well.

Here is my mini "write up" for the Season Finale.

The Leprechaun shoot out and how Sammy was leaning over and 'torturing' him with "Remember Nate Moretta!!"
I thought that was brutal.

Very pleased to see Lydia finally with somebody. Her luck with men isn't the best.
Her partner took is pretty well too.

The foot chase with Ben and John was very intense. I thought I heard John's back crack when he went over the security gate. I shouted out "ouch!!"
The guy they were chasing, that was crazy how he failed that jump. I also shouted out "damn!!".
I'm glad Ben did not attempt that jump.

Nice to see Sammy happy with Sal at the end.

Very nice to see Ben dropping off John at the rehab facility. John told Ben "Thank you" which is really nice.
John was on 3 types of pills! That was crazy.

Great SEASON finale (hopefully not series finale); hope to hell that TNT brings it back again next year; the best show on TV when Mad Men isn't on. The only downside to the ending is that unless something happens, Ben and John won't be riding together anymore. For me that was the highlight of the show, almost like a modern day Adam-12 where the seasoned cop teaches the new kid all his tricks; hate to think that is ending. Maybe John will stop being a trainer next year. And as to the fall in the chase scene, that was one hell of a stunt/CGI effect; I've never seen such a realistic fall on TV or in movies -- fantastic!
I thought Sammy was going to try and get the guy to admit he killed Nate. John saying "thank you" was a given, as it was set up a couple of times with them saying they need to have some one they arrest say thank you, which Ben effectively did to John. This was clearly written as if the show could end at this point, but fortunately that doesn't appear to be the case. Unfortunately we probably have to wait 10 months for new episodes.
What exactly was the dynamic between Ben and Sammy at the end? Was Sammy so ecstatic at being in uniform again he was playing at being a trainer? Ben is always so deadpan in his reactions, I didn't quite get it.

I guess having Ochoa as a partner wouldn't be half as bad as having her for a mother-in-law. Something for Lydia to think about.

Agree on the CGI fall - really well done. In fact, that whole fight sequence was amazing.

^^^^^
Sammy asked to go back to a uniform because he feels he can make a difference. He also made it clear he could help young cops stay alive. He is a Sgt. and was assigned a rookie, in Ben, who he will try to mold even further than John.

@dm145: but I thought Ben had finished his training.

This show deserves a quick pickup notice.

Except for the Wilhelm scream. It's everywhere!

Ben did finish his training and is released on his own. Sammy is just going to show around a pretty bad area. It's more of a mentor thing than a training officer sort of thing.

That's a classic canned scream....and a great one.

I cringed when I heard Coopers back crack as he hopped the fence.

Very good season finale to an excellent show. Let's hope it gets picked up for another season.

Let me add to the hosannahs and agree that week's show was a great season finale. Southland's many three dimensional characters and their stories are consistently interesting. The stage is set for another great season. Now, all that's left to do is hope that the network suits decide to give Southland another year.

I can't believe I left Sammy seeing off Leprechaun with the "Nate Moretta Mother F**ker!" sendoff!!!

And Justice Was Served......

In related to Southland talk, I took half a pain pill (hydrocodone) last night.
My back hurts a little from working out too much.
Don't worry, I won't get addicted. I've had the hydrocodone for 1.5 years
(Left over surgery pills)

Great Post -couldn't agree more. I still remember watching ADAM 12 with my two sons as they were growing up.

I too would like to see more of John and Ben w/o the addiction problem. But no way we get to see them play it straight. Those TV days are long gone.

I must admit I don't understand those at the networks who decide on programming. Why would you invest in a new cop show when you already have an excellent one?

That is great news. Southland is my college student grandson's favorite TV show and, along with Justified, mine too.

My God, Bruce, you are cruel! I'll even live with Tammy to get another Southland fix next season.
