WDTV Wish List! Top 5 Only!

Thread Starter
State your Top 5 Items you'd like to have on the next FW update.
No explanations, No bickering, Nothing!
Simply put your top 5 picks in the same format as below.

Maybe this way ScottWD & the boys can see what we would like without having to go through endless posts and threads.

My Picks;

1/ Subtitle Auto ON/Off Switch

2/ Better GUI (Similiar to Popcorn Hour)

3/ Vorbis audio in MKV support

4/ Powering down of HDD after exiting/ejecting

5/ DVD Menu Support

Please stay on topic; Jessica

Nice idea :-)

Ok, so new features I'd like to see... (I'm using 1.02.03 BETA now, so that's my baseline)

1) DVD menu support (on .ISO files and VIDEO_TS folders)
2) subtitle readability on white background (e.g. using black outline) - actually like .srt in 1.01 was quite good.
3) "Black level" and "HDMI color space" options in the settings menu to adjust picture quality.
4) subtitle support for formatting tags (e.g. etc) in all supported formats (.srt, .ass, etc)
5) improved/perfect playback for supported formats (e.g. some A/V sync drift in AVI, more h.264 reframes, MKV codec combinations)

That's what I'm thinking of now... maybe tomorrow sth else will come to my mind

and just below top 5...

6) ability to switch list view / thumbnail view while browsing folders (without needing to go to Home/Settings)
7) volume control during playback (up/down on the remote)
8) go to time HH:MM:SS feature during playback
post #4 of 154
1)-DVD Menu Support (*.iso, *.img & VIDEO_TS folder)
2)-DTS Audio Pass-through
3)-Gapless MP3/FLAC song playback (for live concert recordings)
4)-Kill Power to USB ports on Shut Down
5)-Goto time function

And, a playlist/ability to choose next 5-10 audio or video files to be played.
And, ability to delete files. Moving files from USB1 to USB2 would be cool, too.

I'm very happy with the unit as is. I have two myself (got friends & relatives to buy 4 more so far...) and wouldn't feel burned if they stopped improving it right now. But I understand others don't feel that way - especially those that rely on captions. Still, I could use a 3rd unit myself, but I'm curious to try that cheap NMT from eGreat. But only because I have a 3TB NAS and would like to try networking...

1.) 'Perfect' 24Hz playback (1080p, 720p etc.), no more stuttering and such.

2.) Automatically select the right resolution and frame rate according to the video file specs -> to be able to turn off scaling.

3.) Proper power management, especially for external USB devices -> external drives should spin down and turn off when you turn off the WD TV-HD.

4.) Improved video media compatibility in general, more reference frames for h.264 (AVC) files if technically possible, improved VC-1 support (e.g. in .mkv containers) etc. Ideally, all the file formats the WD TV-HD already supports should be supported properly in all the supported containers.

5.) Further improvements of the subtitle support, e.g. black outline for better readability, improved sub / idx support, fixing the remaining bugs (subs disappearing at the end of a movie) etc.

Once all that is done, 'cosmetic' improvements like thumbnail support in list-view, polishing of the GUI etc. would be nice. But functionality always should have priority over form.
- Continue to work on improved playback reliability.

- Continue to add support for additional file types.

I agree with many of the above requests. I'd love to see the WD become a top-notch audio player.

1. Gapless audio playback or cross-fading option
2. On-the fly playlist creation
3. True power off when turning off
4. moving files between USB1 and 2
5. file deletion
1. Power off USB after ejecting.
2. White subtitles with thick enough black outline for bright scenes.
3. Support for cd+g/mp3 file type (karaoke files)
4. More reframes support for 1080p video
5. Jump to time: HH:MM:SS
1. Power off to usb drives when unit off
2. Power off to hdmi signal when unit off
3. Power off to usb drives when unit off
4. Power off to hdmi signal when unit off
5. DTS support..
1. Allow subtitles to play when you move the video up a notch.
2. Improvements of the subtitle support, strong black outline/shadow for better readability, or better yet add a option to change font/background color.
3. Power off ALL drives when turning the player off.
4. Better auto chapter mode like PS3 console have.
5. Change all old WD background picture to something new.

The Karaoke idea is excellent! I would love that!

And at the risk of the original poster getting mad at me for going beyond 5 wishes, chapter support would be cool, too.

1. DVD Menu Support
2. DVD Menu Support
3. DVD Menu Support
4. DVD Menu Support
5. DVD Menu Support

or at least some sort of the list where I can select what video to play from Iso file.

I would like to see 1 feature available in my wish list:

After I obtain an .avi file (usually a movie) I usually visit IMDB and create a short piece with a synopsis of the movie, its IMDB rating and movie time length in Word. I would like to have the ability to have this appear on screen with my WD TV Media Player before selecting the movie to play. So if I was going to watch "Oklahoma", I select my Oklahoma Folder and the movie info comes up on my screen. I can then select the .avi movie file to play.

1. OGG Vorbis in MKV
2. Better subtitle rendering
3. Theme feature
4. Better remote response
5. OGM Codec support
On a 20" CRT

1. Subtitle Boldness (degrees would be great, saw some on a userpic but I don't seem to have any on my TV)
2. No sync / missing subtitle issues
3. Option for larger subtitles
4. Complete Power off after auto unloading USB/etc (option?)(don't like warm & idle electronics)
5. Ogg Vorbis in MKV

What if you took a screen capture of (just that section of) the IMDB synopsis? Drop that JPG in your Oklahoma folder and you're good to go. You'd have to view it from the Photos (not Movies) selection on the WDTV, but it's better than nothing...

Here is my whish list:

-Better compatibility with files (audio codec, ref frame increased,..).
-Jump to time
-Better remote response (a headache sometimes)
1. View options for each menu screen with persistant settings (list/folder, items per screen, etc.)
2. "In Play" Display options (aspect, resolution, zoom, frame by frame)
3. DV avi support.
4. DVD menu support (ISO image or extracted files, either is fine for me)
5. Improved music playback view (Full screen album art with complete metadata or visualizer, playlist add, delete function)

"Milkdrop" at 1080p 60fps is absolutely mesmerizing!

here is my wishlist:

1: dvd menu support
2: theme support
3: "Black level" and "HDMI color space" options in the settings menu to adjust picture quality.
4: 'Perfect' 24Hz playback (1080p, 720p etc.)
5: USB copy, move and delete files - feature (copy or move from usb2 to usb1)

regards

Good topic - Thanks.

1/ DVD Menu Support for ISO's & TS Folders (for me this is a huge must, playing a dvd containing many episodes of a series is just mind numbing)

2/ Subtitle Auto ON/Off Switch in the set up prefs

3/ Ability to understand BD structures, this would be extremely nice (Save having to strip the m2ts file from the BD, I won't hold my breath on this one)

4/ Ability to use higher res Thumbs.

I have to say i've never experienced any failure of the disks to spin down on ANY firmware. I'm using a sharkoon twin sata docking station with 2 disks - output via 1 usb to one of the ports on the WD
They both spin down after 10mins of inactivity. I have no idea if this is a just something the sharkoon does or not.

Fix the usb power and mounting issues!

Fix the usb power and mounting issues!

Most basic function of the box needs to work.

WDTV should be able to mount and unmount WD hard disks without having to unplug the drive. Or at least go into a spindown/poweroff mode.

Cheeky it must be something unique to the sharkoon cause the WD my book drives only spindown if you eject them(in which case the wdtv wont recognize the drive upon the next startup). I might have to look into swapping this mybook for one of those sharkoon docking stations. So when you turn the wdtv back on does it recognize and mount the drive too? you can PM me if you dont mind so the thread stays on course.

1 - Playback of files without issues, including perfect 24 Hz playback
2 - USB DVD drive support (larger support than with the alternative firmware)
3 - Bigger subtitle font sizes
4 - Chapter support with DVD (VIDEO_TS foler and ISO) + using Prev and Next keys of the remote control to change chapter
5 - DVD menu support

And I could add little and probably easy changes:
6 - For MKV files, display the title, when defined, of audio and subtitle tracks instead of the language
7 - For M2TS files, display the language for audio tracks
post #24 of 154
My list (not in the order in terms of priority):

1) h.264 HD support for .TS broadcast recordings (SD mpeg-2 broadcasts work fine)...

2) correct loss of aspect information on resume with some DVD rips and SD mkvs - some do work correctly, so possibly an encoding issue, but workwd corretly in original firmware (from the top of my head)

3) skip playback in steps other than 10 min, possibly to be assigned to left/right direction arrows

4) separate playback for all m2ts files in a directory (not just playback of the " main movie" = largest m2ts) - perhaps a licensing issue so won't insist, especially since no one else seems to mind, although this was possible in the original firmware

5) implement option to automatically choose refresh rate based on video file's framerate

Thx

1) proper shutdown of usb disk
2) decoding multichannel flac
3) bigger/better subtitle font
4) delete file on usb support
5) decode 5.1 aac file to 5.1pcm via toslink

1. NO DVD menu system or further DTS support. just to make everybody else miserable and realistic

2. full support of advanced substation alpha tags, or at the very least add all the .ass tag codes into the same ignore list as standard italics and bold

3. vorbis in matroska

4. GMC support (a guy can dream)

5. better default font/display of subtitles, rather than the thin and hard to see type face currently available
post #27 of 154
1. Vorbis audio in mkv container
2. Change subtitle color to dark yellow with visible black outline (or make color selectable)
3. power down of USB devices on eject / switching off

Hmmm, only 3 wishes? But 3 is always the maximum number when you're granted wishes anyway.

Never! I don't want the WDTV to have the ability to copy / delete / change files on my disk. (That's the reason I formatted my drives in HFS+Journaled, so that the WDTV won't be able to write on them)

OK, that's my 4th wish: no file manipulation by the WDTV

Must intervene, sorry...toslink can't carry multichannel PCM, choose another wish for 5) ...say, decode 5.1 AAC to 5.1 DD or DTS
