That is a good choice, I like the movie and your correct that it is visually and audibly appealing. I would have also given a thumbs up to Transformers, The Incredibles, Gladiator, or The Mummy. Food for thought.

Transformers. so far still my go to movie for both PQ and SQ. a close seocnd to simply show off is speed racer. the visuals in the movie blow EVERYONE away. sound is pretty decent as well.

and TDk is nice as well, but to me doesnt match up as well picture wise. I mean it looks fantastic, but its not a jaw dropper like the other 2 IMO

I haven't had the chance to view anything on the SMX screen yet. I'm still waiting for the projector to come in. I have a Sanyo Z5 I may hook up over the weekend to 'test' while I wait for the RS-20. The weave of the material is very tight and if I'm 4-5 feet away I can't make it out. Certainly the speakers behind it sound great and I can't hear any issues with it.

As for the first movie, those others are all great choices too. In some ways it would probably be better to have a movie I'm familiar with, but then I might be too critical, and not get into the experience as well? Certainly as you say RTROSE, some food for thought.

Greg, you'll certainly get LOTS of feedback about which movie makes a good first choice, and looks and sounds the best...and there's also the reference list, etc. For my .02, Iron Man and TDK were the two titles I absolutely would not watch until I could do so in my own theater...and I watched both of them, as 2 of the 4 movies I premiered for those first viewings. FWIW, I have seen nothing since that beats TDK for audio...especially if you have a good sub and want to kick the sh*t out of the LFE track! Not that Iron Man was any slouch.

A double feature may make the choosing easier.

Some more progress on the shed

The siding is basically done (about 3 pieces to go on the back)
The roofing is in progress and should be done tomorrow.

Shed is looking really nice! Looking over the fence I can tell you that your neighbor will soon have "shed envy"!

Another thought on the movie selection. I have considered many times what will be the first movie and I always come back to movies I'm familiar with. I think this is because I have watched it so many times that I can clue in on the subtle or not so subtle differences any changes to equipment or setup would do. I can't argue with Iron Man or TDK. Both of those are great choices, I still would however go with Transformers, my personal favorite demo material, or here is another thought. The pixar movies are typically visually stunning, sometimes lacking in LFE as compared to "action flicks", but none the less make a visual WOW factor in their own way. Sorry to muddy the water, just trying to give you options.

The biggest issue with the neighbors shed is that it's not even level. Talking about the shed, it's now almost done! There are 3 pieces of siding to put up and I have to wire up the plugs and switches and that's it. I know I'm not providing proof, but it's too dark for pictures.

The installer is still working on the rack. I'm still waiting for the projector to come in (hopefully tomorrow!!!). There is still a surprising amount to do, but I hope it will be done for the weekend.

It truly amazes me as much as I have done that as the completion of the kids area nears how much "little stuff" tends to just pop up. Nothing major but just small time consuming details that rear their ugly heads for attention.

Here's hoping your projector comes in and your enjoying your "Premier" this weekend!

Yeah, there is a ton of those little things coming up now. The problem with them is that they all seem to take an hour or two to finish as well.

I can't believe how much more organized the rats nest of wires under the stairs has become

The acoustic panels are also in!

The panels are pitch black without the flash.

The rear speakers also arrived

I only have four right now, hopefully they ordered the six I need.

A little something else arrived too

This thing is massive, at least compared to the sanyo projectors I've been running before!

I can't wait to have it mounted to the roof!

wow, I love the colors in your room, and those chairs are beautiful. Amazing job.I love brown/wood tones

Thanks antwon

I really like how the colors look together too. I'm going to have the painters come back for touch-ups and will get the brown painted again, but in a satin, so there is less reflection.

I can't believe how much more work there is for the installer to do. There are 21 4x8 foot panels of OC703 to be cut and placed in the front of the room, the screen to be rehung, the rear speakers and projector to be installed, the lutron shade to go in, the computer, server and network gear to go in under the stairs, the lighting automation and remote to be programmed, and a bunch of other stuff I'm not even thinking of. I may take some more pictures for a detailed look at the rack soon.

damn Canadians When I first read that I thought you meant outside on your roof, then realized you call your ceiling the roof as well

Anyways great build thread. I really like the way you did the acoustic panels in the room.

Man, it is all coming together and looking fantastic. Nice work! I feel weird as a man saying this to another man.......but I got to do it...........you have a nice rack! Oh, I even winced when I said it, but I do truly mean it. No slouch in the equipment department for sure. You will have a top notch theater when done.

Uh, Thanks RT

The last of the rear speakers are up. I though having a side surround for each row would be a good idea. I'll need to patch a little drywall.

The front acoustical treatments are also going up. Thanks to TheBland I decided to go ahead with a baffle wall (as I understand it). There is seven inches of OC703 going on the front wall.

And then the most exciting news of the day!

The Panamorph lens and slide are here! The whole unit with projector, lens, slide and surprisingly thick steel mounting plate weighs in at 50 lbs. This may not impress the CRT guys around here, but it does mean I need a more substantial projector mount than was ordered.

Congrats man!! The baffle wall is a fantastic, inexpensive edition that few employ!

Since I don't want to sacrifice the space to do corner triangular bass traps, this should be somewhat effective at taming the bass, while at the same time providing the benefits of a baffle wall. And it will cost less than corner bass traps. Since I'm tens of thousands over budget now, it's nice to save a little here and there!

Here is another pic showing the progress.

WOW seven inches on the front wall! I've been thinking of a baffle wall for my HT2.0
post #146 of 243

I can't say what effect the baffle wall has on the sound of the speakers in the room because I don't have a prior reference point. That said, walking up to this thing is like walking up to a black hole. It's weird being able to hear silence!

The front wall is now complete

The subwoofer hole is not as obvious as it is in the picture. The screen is as large as it could be for this room. I can't even stick my finger between the frame and the side wall!

I'm really happy with the way it looks, but wonder if it could use some baseboard. Any opinions?

Don't you really mean BASSboard?

Man that looks fantastic. Very classy. I think looking at the photo the wall looks very nice, but maybe putting in some baseboards might give it that finishing touch. You could always test fit a sample on part of the front wall, snap a couple of comparison photos and then we would have a visual representation of how it looks both ways so we could give you a no BS assessment. Just a thought.

What is your impression of the JVC? From what I read here and other places the JVC is simply the one to beat. Enjoy!

I don't know what the picture on the JVC looks like yet. It killing my to have such a fine piece of technology just sitting there! Hopefully tomorrow I'll get it hooked up and get to see what it can do.

There may be a problem with placing the projector where I had wanted to, in front of my soffit. I had originally planned on going with a projector quite a bit smaller than the RS20. My installer thinks we will probably have to place it behind the soffit. I'm hoping I can maybe cut a chunk out of the soffit and have the projector sit just in front of the LVL beam thats at the back of the soffit. We are going to set up the projector on a ladder before installing it and see what is possible.

Even if it has to go behind my soffit, it will look fine (and actually move the projector a little further away from the prime front row seats).

I would love to test out a strip of baseboard to see how it looks but the woodwork in this room came from the custom cabinetmakers and was shockingly expensive. It will be a little difficult to get my hands on some. I'll probably leave it as is for now and if it bothers me I'll get some baseboard made up.

I really like the way the front wall turned out. I soooooo need to do a dedicated theater the next time around.

Greg,

Your front wall looks good, nice work. I'd bet some baseboard would look really nice with the rest of the wood in the room. But, once you get the projector hung, I'm guessing the baseboard will become less of an issue.

Are you planning to use a lens or zooming the JVC for scope?
