Scopeguy's 'Scope Theater - Page 3

Scopeguy,

Your build is really coming along. The woodwork is great. It really adds some detail to your basement. Have you decided a color scheme yet?

I think I will paint it a dark brown. This is one of the colors on my main floor and I think you can still appreciate the woodwork with it. If I go any darker the wood seems to lose it's detail.

If I don't like it paint is easy to change.
The roof will be almost black (hint of brown).

The woodwork is complete! (the panels may be delayed)
Here it is, a little cleaned up.

The dishwasher is also in, completing the plumbing.

CD, you might end up with a PM or two soon...

I hope I can figure out how to use it.

Well, not much progress this week. I thick everyone is away on holidays.

My pool table arrived, and since there's carpet in the basement I had it setup. I think it looks really nice! The fabric came out a little more yellow than I expected but it will work and the wood color is almost perfect.

My OC703 has arrived, but no word on the fabric. My garage is getting so full of stuff waiting to be installed I now can't put either vehicle in it.

To help handle some of the clutter, I've started on my shed!

Hopefully there will be some actual home theater news soon.

Greg, just saw your post. It's been a few days; either you got it figured out all by yourself, or you haven't tried to set-up the PCH yet (or SW helped you, or you discovered this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1162508). Theater's looking great (wish I had room for a Pool table...or Bar for that matter); PCH can only add to the enjoyment (you know, once you start watching movies ).

Nice work!

Make sure you get absorption around your LCRs. Make it a 'Baffle Wall of sorts. It will increase your soundstage, dialog intelligibility and channel separation. Easy and cheap upgrade.

Here's mine. THX recommended/required!

I haven't tried too hard to set it up yet. I do know that the video_ts way I ripped a few things so far is not ideal. Does adding YAMG help me to tell what I am trying to play. I am able to play some of the video_ts files but I can't play (or even find with the navigation) the one (.IFO) that lets me play the main menu and navigate like I can with my computer. Thanks for reminding me of the link. I should put in at least a little more work on it before I call out for help!

With the pool table and bar, it's been quite a squeeze to get everything in. The room is a little over 15 feet by a little over 12. That is a 7 foot table and I will still have to use 52" cues most of the time. That said, I very happy with how it's turned out.

Jeff

Thanks for coming by. I plan on having the whole front wall, and the side walls to 36" out from the front treated with OC703. With this baffle wall, what is it made of? Should I be bringing the 703 forward off the wall to make it? Looks like I have some more reading to do!

Been a while since I've dropped in. Looks fantastic. The wood really makes it. Very nice. I wish my basement was more of an open design, I would have loved to put in an actual game room with a pool table. Hope the progress continues at a pace your happy with.

Your other project (the shed) is one I'm contemplating for next year. Mine came with the house (six years ago) and is showing signs of age and neglect and is too small for my needs. I am not brave enough to tackle two construction projects like a shed and a theater at once. I'm afraid that neither one would get completed! 8-)

I'm not an expert on baffle walls... My baffle wall is simply constructed of plywood and 2" absorption covered by GOM 701. Go to the THX site and see their example. Speakers are tipped in ~!0 degrees.

Since I hired out almost all of the basement work, I better have enough time to build the shed! I'm on call all the weekend though, so we'll see what actually gets done.

I'm going to hold off on the screen wall until I get the fabric so I can hide as many staple lines as possible in the construction.

Since the speakers don't come out very far from the wall I wonder if I could just have the OC703 out from the wall with nothing behind it other than a few studs for the false wall and either leave the few inch gap empty (or fill it with roxul) to create the baffle?

Well I wish I had a suggestion for you regarding the baffle wall. Even the THX site is really somewhat vague on how to actually go about building or the materials involved in the construction of a baffle wall.

Two places to go for a little more info. Sorry I could not help more. I'm clueless on the the baffle part, but maybe I've given you a couple of places to go to start figuring it out.

Thank RTROSE

I read the THX website as well and it could have been a little more helpful.

Shifting gears a little, I'm going to need more hard drive storage for my media server to put all my movies on it. Costco has western digital my book USB dual 1 TB drives on for what seems like a good price. As I understand it, I can add USB hard drives to the server's total storage and I would prefer not using all the internal bays on 'small' hard drives. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Some progress in the basement; the doors in the rest of it went up. Now just waiting for paint, final electrical and home theater equipment install. Oh, and that screen wall i have to build.

Hello, I was wondering what all those cables are running to your projector? I was thinking that I only needed two for my projector. HDMI and power cord??? Again I am a rookie!!

Hi KansasRookie

I like redundancy!

There is an HDMI cable, 3 cat5e cables (two can be used with a 'balun' to create an HDMI cable if mine breaks, 1 for control (12 volt trigger or others)), 3 RG6 cables (can be terminated to make a component cable, and a 2 inch conduit for anything else I might need.

I don't want to have to tear down my ceiling later, and cables are cheap to run now.

Painter's came back today!

The theater has a coat on it

I didn't know whether to do the soffits in the roof color or the wall color, but I think I like it this way. Along the front wall there will be some fabric on the roof so that should kill light reflections.

The shower door is in

and the rest of the doors in the basement as well.

The painter's come back tomorrow, then some of the theater gear starts to get installed, as well as the grafik eye.

Progress! Yeah! Looking good. I like the colors very classy! Keep up the progress, oh and don't forget to include the occasional shed progress photos!

Regards,

RTROSE

Oh and FWIW I like the soffits the same color as the wall vs. having them the same as the ceiling.

Oh Yeah! Shed progress...

I'm building it 7 feet tall so I won't bump by head!

I like the shed, looking good. The HT and rest of it is looking pretty good too.

Did you buy a kit for the shed? Doesn't seem like it. I need a shed bad, and now your giving me the idea of just going for it with standard materials available. Probably a little cheaper, and I really don't need to run electrical to it though it would be nice...

Thanks Oman

The shed is my own design. It is definitely cheaper than buying a kit, and you can build it a lot better than the kit. I built the floor out of 2x6's spaced a foot apart, with 3/4" plywood on top. You don't find that in a kit! I also like the big window in it.

what are your shed dimensions? I went 12x16 for the shear fact I never wanted to run out of room...

Mine is 8 by 11, and 7 feet tall. In order to not require a permit it had to be under 100 square feet. Hopefully its big enough.

Thats the number one rule with a shed. they always say make it bigger than you will ever need. there is nothing worse than having to build a second shed...
My first shed was 8'x12' with 8' walls. It had a hip roof to match the house, and two windows on the front. It had flood lights and power on both sides as well as a spigot on the front. Lots of fun to build! I'm about due to build my second this fall/winter and looking forward to it.

That's a good-looking shed. I'm trying to decide whether to match my roof line as well. My house has a fairly steep pitch on the roof (maybe 6/12?). I'm not sure whether that will make it seem too tall as it already dwarfs my neighbors shed, but it might match my house better.

Oh boy, another 2 cubic yards of crushed gravel arrived so I can finish my patio. Time to get out the wheelbarrow again!

Thanks. the hip roof was interesting to figure out all the angles and lengths. I am kind of glad I don't have to match that on the new house.

Jeff, would you mind expanding on you impressions of the baffle wall. I'm using the KL650's for LCR and have the space available to do the baffle. Do you feel it was a worthy project or is it of minimal significance? Thanks.

I would love more info on the baffle wall also. What I'm wondering is if I should just get enough 703, about 6-8 inches, placed along the front wall to come even with the speakers, whether it would be worth it?

It turns out my roof pitch is 8/12. I'm matching this on my shed.
Rafters in progress.

Still waiting on fabric for the home theater so I can build the screen wall.

Some sheathing on the roof of the shed now. It was too hot today so I worked on the electrical in the shade inside the shed in the afternoon.

I picked up some new hard drives for media storage. I'll hook them up via USB to the HP Mediasmart server. I will probably set them to be backed up by the server, rather than using their own RAID 1 capability. Now to just take the time to figure out how to work it all!

As for the shed, the sheathing is done and the window and door are in. I need to work a bit on the soffits and then it is ready for shingles and siding.
I'm glad I went for the 8/12 pitch.
