Whats the difference between 24hz and 60hz and why do people prefer 24hz?

Also how can i tell if 24hz is supported by my tv? I tried it and its fine and no stutter from previous versions but not sure if i should be running it or not?

FYI i have a samsung le40a656 please answer me somebody!

The bug: Try to 2x reverse and you will see all of your life comes before your eyes (until pressing play again) !

I also noticed that at "2x reverse" the movie seems to rewind in very fast speed but when you press play again you see the real reverse point that the movie has reached.

1st new bug so far!!

Hello,

if i want to watch 1080p/24, do i need the source to be Bluray? Or it can be from mkvs ? How do i tell if my tv is playing back 1080p/24 when i watch a movie?
Hello

My first question is , is there anyone from WD support reading those posts ??
If Yes , PLEASE keep it in mind some futures :

WD need some basics things like :

- random aspect ratio ( almost all kmp videos 720p and 1080p need to delete black lined up/down ). It's really important because now we can't change the screen. The LCD can to do that .. but you'll loose the sub ( out of screen )

- random sub positions !!!!!!! UP and DOWN !!! Thats really important

- background for the subs ( some of the movies need this option. Depends )

- Subtitle colors ( or add --- > This kind sub )

Looking forward this options.

Beside this all my movies are working perfect on mkv 720p - 1080p / 60 Hz DTS.
No problem at all with mkv now.
Great job !! Keep it up

It takes 14 seconds to start. The first minute plays fine. After that, the sound goes off and doesn't come 'til 1'55''. Also it suffers one second freezes all the movie.

I'm playing it in a Sharp AQUOS LC-32GP1U and an Onkyo HT5100.

Thx
PS: Sry about my english.

I didn't know WD HD supports bluray ISOs.
Does it?

AHHH I updated to 1.02.04 and now it won't recognize my WD Passport 500gb or my 8gb thumbdrive. I upgraded the firmware with my Passport and obviously it read it fine.

Your TV does support 1080p/24Hz, I know because a friend of mine has the same model.

I have a different Samsung model, but they all are very similar as far as the setup is concerned. Set the WD TV-HD to 1080p/24, and press 'Info' on your Samsung remote. It should show you that it is running at 1080p/24. If your TV supports 100Hz (I think it does, not 100% sure though), turn it off in the setup also while you are at it.

People (cineastes in particular) prefer the 24Hz (23.976Hz rather), because that's the native frame rate of movies, a necessity for the authentic 'film look'. If you play them back at 60Hz, they look more like videos, or TV for that matter. That authentic look is lost.

It does not have to be Blu-ray, any source with a 24Hz (23.976Hz) frame rate can be used, including .mkvs, of course. Use MediaInfo for detailed information of those files.

Your TV should have an 'info' button or similar, showing the resolution and frame rate currently in use. For Samsung TVs, it's the 'Info' button on the remote.
seems that subtitles disappears when you use the RW/FF button too often even you try to enable/disable them with options... I have to stop the video and resume it again to make them appear.
Also, the letters in subtitles are kinda far from each other :/

like: H e l l o - I ' a m - a - d u c k

should be: Hello I'am a duck

but the black outline is already far better

Regarding subtitles, please don't forget these things:

Quote:

*BUG* Subtitles disappear, when the "displace image" function (changing screen position) OR the "zoom" feature is used during video playback with activated subtitles.

*BUG* Subtitles suddenly stop being displayed approx. 10 seconds before the end of the video file is reached.

*BUG* When you resume viewing a video file it is not resuming using the same subtitle (and audio track) it was being viewed before.

*BUG* Subtitles disappear when you REVerse/FastForward too frequently.

Quote:

Subtitle requests

  • The ability to alter the vertical position of subtitles using short intervals,
to move them higher or lower on screen.
Possible way: The UP and DOWN cursor buttons on the remote could be used when the "subtitle" icon in the "OPTION" menu is highlighted by the user during video playback. The last chosen position should by stored into the WD TV into its brain.
  • A new selectable option in the settings menu: "subtitle outline thickness" with ~5 different values to make subtitles better readable ...
... where 0 stands for "no outline", 1 "as it is in the current 1.02.04 firmware", 2 "a little bit thicker than 1", 3 "a little bit thicker than 2" ...
  • A new selectable option in the settings menu: "subtitle color".
Requested colors: white, yellow, dark yellow, transparent white, grey and black. (more possible)
  • A new selectable option in the settings menu: "subtitle outline color": black, white and yellow. (more possbile)

Taken from here:
The (inofficial) Western Digital "WD TV" bug list & feature request thread
(four months old!)

Quote:

Two brand new subtitle requests by the community:
  • A new selectable option in the settings menu: "Auto load external subtitles?": On or OFF.
  • A new selectable option in the settings menu: "Auto load embedded subtitles?": On or OFF.
Important note: The WD TV should select the embedded subtitle track which is marked as "default" first. (default track flag)
Important note 2: Subtitle handling of DVD-VIDEOs should not be affected by this setting. (That's a different story)

24Hz works fine now.

Are you guys REALLY sure???

What about the following *BUG*? ->>

Quote:

  • In "1080p 24Hz" display resolution mode, 23.976 fps video files (e.g. .M2TS) suffer a really short stuttering/juddering (exactly 1 frame to be exact ) in a 40-seconds cycle. (this is not the other 24p .MKV bug)
This juddering in a 40-seconds-cycle usually occurs, if the device outputs fixed 24.000 fps whereas it should output 23.976 fps. (24 Hz is not the same as 23.976 Hz)
I advice everybody that have problems with WDTV recognizing their drive to first delete the .wd_tv folder and restart the wdtv (disconnect from power).

As for playback problems (choppy playback and loss of sound) with large ~25GB blu-ray rips. The wdtv may have problems with disk reading speed over usb. You should try using faster file system, ntfs with 64kb clusters, fat32 (with bigger files cut to smaller parts) or ext2.

And my thoughts about current firmware:
- srt subs now fully works to the end of movie
- vobsub idx/sub still doesn't show last subtitle but now have nice black outline around letters

So, looks like THE firmware to keep

I have had no problems with thumbnails with different names than the folder. But all my parent folders have a jpg named "folder.jpg". My hd is arranged as follows:

Animation (folder)
- Movie name - Year.Release (sub-folder)
- Movie name - Year.avi
- Movie name - Year.jpg
- Movie name - Year.srt
- folder.jpg
Movies
Movies HD
TV Shows
folder.jpg (I want to have my hd associated with a thumb on the folder view. dunno if it's possible or not, is it?)

Did your parent folders displayed thumbs on the 1.02.03 firmware?

I don't believe any displays actually show video at 24hz but rather an even multiple - usually 72hz. I believe that's the case with my Optoma HD65.

I could be wrong so please correct, but this is my understanding.
What I have noticed regarding thumbnails now is that the WD TV seems to only cache a minimal amount of thumbs. If you go over the thumbs have to reload. For example when I go to ALL VIDEO I scroll through and load all thumbnails. Then when I go to MUSIC / FOLDERS. Scroll and load 300 albums with thumbs. Then once I go to ALL VIDEO again the thumbs have to actually "reload" or re-cache them. Doesnt seem to retain them and load fast. Its like I removed the hard drive and it has to re-cache them again. Anyone else notice this? That the thumbs arent being cached with a large number of files?

I guess my question is how many thumbs can the wd tv cache in order for the thumbs to display "fast

Ok. It seems the WD TV is only caching 250-300 (ish) thumbnails (files with thumbnails). Are thumbs being loaded in memory? It seems so. I figure it would go to hard drive, to its own cache file or something.

Kind of annoying with large collections, waiting for thumbnails to initially load. I figure once they load the first time they would stay and not have that 5-7 second delay of loading 10 thumbs on screen
post #116 of 415
So I've done a bit of testing with firmware 1.02.04 and here are some quick notes...
  • 24fps videos seem to be working... mostly. I noticed the odd stutter on a few files but it could be an issue with the file itself rather than the display. I will test some more.
  • Fast-forwarding and rewinding indeed seems to be messed up. For instance, if you fast-forward visually to a spot and press play, it will revert back to a previous point in the video. This was tested on MKVs.
  • I do not like subtitles on by default.
  • As someone else pointed out, menus indeed feel somewhat sluggish at 1080p/24
post #117 of 415
Subtitles are acceptable this time around, at least how they display. I have not tried any any more tests, though. Count me in with having them auto-off, unless that is the limitation of having them work properly or something.

GuyWD/ScottWD

Tested 1080p with 24fps, AC3 Audio + UTF8 Subtitles
Issues: 1. Subtitles not sync, not even displaying properly.
2. Sound goes after 10Mins of paly
3. Video Shuttering
4. 2x Rev. realy sucks, it's looks like 16x rev.
5. 2x rev then Play then 2x FWD, takes you to aprox 1.5/2 mins ahead.
