BD-UP5000 player - no new firmware to be released by Samsung!!

Everyone, if you have a BD-UP5000, you need to call Samsung and raise Hell - they informed today that "there are no plans to release a firmware update for the BD-UP5000" - this renders it as useless in my eyes! No new BD disks will play, such as Slumdog Millionaire, Quantum of Solace, etc, etc.

I called today 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864) (press 1,4,5 to skip the prompts and go directly to consumer electronics, other)

SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR - and get a ticket number, otherwise it won't even register on their system as a complaint. Be prepared to provide your serial number too, if you still have the box, it's easier to get off there than off the back of unit most of the time.. look for the barcode on the box, serial is under that - format is 10 char, letters & numbers.

Please post back here if you call, Samsung need to know this is unnacceptable!

Quantum Of Solace played just fine on my 5k.

Slumdog also plays fine...

As long as the player is in their active lineup of players at http://pages.samsung.com/us/bluraysupport/support.html , I have little reason to believe they won't issue another update.

It won't hurt to call but the level 1 tier reps are notoriously useless and spout misinfo.

It's hard to make conclusive statements out of one experience, even if told by a CSR/TSR with most companies. If I'm remembering correctly, I believe people were reporting being told something similar about "no planned updates" prior to 1.4 and maybe prior to 1.3 release as well.

I'm sure at some point they will stop... but have no idea about when that would be. I think it likely they might stop developing new features, but I believe due to the nature of Blu ray and changing encryption keys most manufacturers will risk class-action lawsuits and major consumer backlash if they do not continue to support playback via firmware updates.

It's going to be a lot harder with Blu ray to abandon old models because that would make Blu ray players "throwaway" units and that's certainly not what they are sold as being.

I'm in Vancovuer, Canada - the videos I had were from Rogers Video, and Blockbuster - is it possible there are some differences in rental vs store-bought disks? Slumdog wouldn't play except for the menu on my player (tried two disks, from dif rental places), it would sit at 0:00:00 on the display when I hit play, and then couldn't get back to the menu, or anything else. I sincerely hope you are right, that the tech and supervisor I spoke to are wrong - but it certainly makes me think twice about buying a Samsung.. the alternative isn't good either, I'd rather not buy a Sony, as I would prefer there to be competition in the market...

Sony is only one alternative...the soon-to-be-released Oppo might be the way to go.

I also rented Slumdog, but it's hard to say what you received up there in Canada. And I can't believe a supervisor signed off on that misinformation. That's just irresponsible.

I have the latest available for download via the player directly (over ethernet), which I believe is 1.4, yes? I can't confirm right now as it's unplugged completely.

I attempted to download the .iso from Samsung, burn it to CD - but it kicks the disc out, so not sure if Nero didn't burn it right, or if I didn't follow the right procedure.

The download via ethernet only gives you 1.3. You have to download to your computer to get 1.4. I had problems playing Slumdog Millionaire on my unit with 1.3. It hung up the way you say yours did. I had to shut it down and then restart to get it to play. I have now upgraded to 1.4.

Yeah, it didn't get written right. I had the same problem. I ended up downloading the free ImgBurn program and using that. There are instructions for finding that in the owners thread. And here's a thread for what settings to use:

Hi,

Here's what you have to do: Burn a CD-R (using Nero is excellent) with the version 1.4 (burn the iso. image properly of course), then update your player.
If your player reject the disc, it's because you didn't burn it properly.
Reburn the 1.4 version, and put it in your player again (use a quality CD-R).
Then after the update, check with a blu-ray disc.
If you still have problems, put the same disc again in your 5000 to re-update it a second time.
It will work the 2nd time around. That's it.

If for any reason, that it is still not satisfactory, call Samsung customer service and request that they'll send you the Firmware Update Disc Version 1.4 for your Samsung BD-UP5000, by mail.

100% guarantee that you will be set for good.

Cheers,

Bob

Note: When you update, make sure that you are not connected to your computer by the LAN cable.

Thanks for the plug, chief.

Only two more weeks to go for the month of May, which is the month when Samsung usually released a new firmware (in the past at least).
So, there might be a possibility of a new one coming soon (fingers crossed).

Happy End of Easter's Passover to all,

Bob

Thank you guys for the info, and details on using IMGburn - Nero just didn't burn it right on my system, but IMGburn did, first time..

Really appreciate all the responses, outstanding!

I blame the scourge of bloatware when it comes to Nero (it wasn't always like that). Glad to hear that the efficient IMGburn did the trick.

Most of you having problem burning firmware updates with Nero use option to burn compilation and then copy ISO file on CD-R. ISO file is an image file of a disc and needs to be burned as image burn. Check out Nero options and select burn disc from an image not compilation. And you don't need CD-R, use CD-RW in case you make mistake. You can easily rewrite them 1,000 times. Verbatim 32X CD-RW media is the best choice.

I chatted with a Samsung Blu-ray "expert" Friday about blu-ray discs issues that I never had up until now(11 months and 3 weeks later) and he said that they are working on a new firmware for the BD-P5000. No date available.
