AV Upgrade: Looking For Opinions & Suggestions

Thread Starter
I'm in the market to upgrade my current AVR (a 3-year old Pioneer non-HDMI VSX-516) to one that will provide me the following:

excellent HT audio & music reproduction
video upscaling a plus
Reliability
Multiple HDMI connections
plenty of power

Connected to: Motorola /comcast HD box, Toshiba HDDVD player, XBox 360, ps3, Samsung 63" plasma, fronts: jbl s38 & center; surrounds: jbl s26 & CS newton s205, sub: SVS pc12-nsd

In my set-up, our usage breaks down along these lines: HT 40%, HDTV 25%, Gaming 20%, Music 15%. No radio play.

Budget: $800-1000

Some of the models I've been investigating and considering:

Denon AVR-3808ci
Onkyo TX-SR876
Pioneer SC-05
HK AVR 355
Marantz SR7002

Each seem to have certain strengths (and thusly, each have their loyal followings). Any input or comments for those who've been through this decision-making process would be appreciated. I'd like to know why you chose the make/model you did over the others and are you pleased with that decision? Thanks!

The 876 imo is the best choice however it's jumped in price recently and probably out of your price range new. Check out accessories4 less for the 876, 875, 805, 905 refurbished all within your price range. They all have basically the same massive amp section so if that's your priority then the 805 would serve you well and save some bucks. The 875, 876 and 905 add more features such as better video processors if that's what your looking for.

Join "Club Onkyo" and you can get the 806 for $699. Or the 706 for $549, either is a great deal.

The Onkyo TX-SR876 is your best choice by a wide margin in your case.

It is within your budget too. (Right in the midle.)

Check it out here: www.accessories4less.com

I personally own and love the 876 for too many reasons to enumerate here, but have a look at all the features here: www.us.onkyo.com
It is by far the very best value, plus best performance from your list.

Cheers,

Bob
