Getting serious for a moment, here is why I said it is sad that so many threads turn into this. Here is what I would think a person who actually wanted to engage in a discussion might have posted.
I received a quote for programming (2) ML-600 and one TPS-6X for $3840. I was shocked by the amount. Can someone tell me why this would be so much? Am I being taken advantage of?
Of course the above approach assumes that there is a person on the other end of the keyboard who actually wants to learn about the subject at hand, and wants to receive helpful replies. Instead the poster announces that he knows what "real programming is", why, well of course because he's a software programmer. While revealing in the very next sentences that he doesn't have the first clue what is actually involved in programming the items he got a quote for.
So let me pretend that an imaginary poster instead posted what is above so that the thread could actually be productive. The TPS-6X is a touchscreen that is a "blank slate". First the graphics have to be created for it and/or customized for it based on the exact components in the system. This can be done entirely from scratch, or some elements can be auto-generated by Crestron's program, though most programmers do not take that approach as the auto-generated pages leave something to be desired as would be expected.
Then you have the actual programming which is performed using an object oriented program named SIMPL. There is also a language more like C+ named SIMPL+.
In his pic he shows a PVID which is 16 input, 8-zone component/s-vid/composite processor and a 24 input 8 zone audio processor. Those BTW are pretty advanced components and along cost about $10,000 (don't worry, I am sure someone was raped there too ;-)). So clearly the home came with a very advanced multi-zone A/V control system.
Now, what should it cost? Well, no idea because I don't know why this TPS-6X is being added or what it is going to do. The price could be high but it certainly does not jump out as "OMG, they are ripping him off" any more than someone quoting $3840 to create a custom website is ripping someone off. Then again, we all know you can buy a flash website template for $40 on the Internet, so OMG, how can someone charge $3840 for a website and rip people off like that, I mean all they do is buy a template and load it to the web hosting company, right?! And I know because after all, I work with Crestron and graphics and therefore know what web design should cost.
But I digress, it's just hard not to be sarcastic when seeing this type of arrogance combined with so little knowledge about a subject. I just find it funny that with my 20 years experience in this industry, I can't really say if that quote is fair, but someone who knows nothing about the subject can, and that what's more, "it's like programming a VCR". I'm going to guess this guy could give me a quote for the work he does and if I knew nothing about it I could have the same ridiculous reaction. Why is he charging me 45K to create that custom software? I can create a social group on Ning myself in 30 minutes. Ripoff!
Anyhow, the bottom line is that the work that the thread starter keeps insisting is involved, "adding a couple of remotes" is in fact not what is involved at all. A touchscreen is involved, the graphics have to be created for it, and every aspect of it programmed for a house-wide control system
. If I knew the scope I could say whether it seems high, as it is I can only say that it does not jump out as excessive, and that as with most things more time often ends up being involved than one would think. We as humans are after all (NOT being sarcastic here) infamous for thinking things will take a fraction of the time they actually do. Now having said all that, ya, maybe it is high. And if he'd have approached it in way that would have encouraged a real
discussion, and provided more info on scope, maybe he could have gotten some useful feedback on it.
Here BTW is a graphics template
that can be purchased for the TPS-6X. Where do these guys get off charging $600 for a graphics template for one touchscreen that they sell again and again? Sacrilege! I take photographs so I know know what this stuff should cost
