The "Official" Canon HFS10 / HFS100 Owner's Thread - Page 12

Thanks for the help and great advice, Luc48 and Francois Caron.

So I am looking at wide angle lenses, and I am guessing that I should go with Canon's lens. Ouch.

Now that I have looked at the batteries, and knowing the crazy situations I am often in, I may get a BP827 or two. I wonder if I can find a charger for the car since dead camera batteries are not cool.

That 750GB WD Passport is NICE. I will have to see if our tech guys can get me a couple. I am thinking that I'll put the footage on the drive and then when a coworker heads back to the states, they can take some footage back. And the 16GB cards may be the way to go as well. I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere with a bum card.

I am a huge fan of the Hague MMC, and it may be a great thing to add to my aresenal once I get all the must haves out of the way. I am wondering what people in some of the random places I visit will think of the MMC, and that may defeat my strategy to avoid getting affected footage. Hmmm. Something for me to think about.

Francois Caron, great footage. I am happy to know that a monopod will mostly get me what I need. I have to carry so much on my person already that a tripod is just not going to happen. As for the quick release, I am usually setting up and tearing down quickly since I tend to find myself in conflict zones or other insecure locales on occasion. Being able fling myself into a vehicle or helo at the drop of a hat is key.

I just wish I could hire one of you video pros to come with me so I could fully concentrate on my day job, but unfortunately that's a non-starter.

Anything else you can think of, please let me know. I am drinking from a fire hose here, but I am trying to make the best of it.

One important test to perform when shopping around for a monopod: the shake test. Extend it fully, hold it firmly against the floor, and shake the midsection around. It's okay if there's a bit of flex, but it shouldn't rattle or feel as if it may fall apart.

You're heading to conflict zones? Definitely get the quick release! And if you get a hefty model like my old 079, you can use it as a very efficient defense weapon.

wait till you see the S11's dynamic IS. it's pretty damn good.
i can tell the difference between my previous hv20 with the standard IS and the new Dynamic.

Where did you play with one? I'm interested in the S11 little sister the hf 21 which does not appear for sale but is hidden at Canon's website here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...delFeaturesAct

I'm looking at this one specifically for the extra dynamic IS.

thanks,

i don't mean to go off topic or thread jack. i just wanted to say a little something about the upcoming S11.

i bought my HF S11 off of an ebay seller in japan.
i highly recommend going for this one. the dynamic IS is great and it works. there's a sample video on the japanese canon site and it really works like that.

i have a very short list of quirks with this cam. off the top of my head:

1. during playback on my tv, i can not get rid of the playback "aplet" on the screen, like the hv20 with the push of the display button.

2. the shooting info, like f stop and shutter speed can not be brought up with the display button, like the hv20.

3. battery life of the oem battery sucks, so i am going with a couple of those knock off high capacity bp-827's

these are in no way deal breakers. i just will have to deal with it.

on the other hand, there are a lot of things i like about this than my previous hv20. almost the whole cam has been improved upon the hv20.

i got mine delivered on august 22nd, just days after it was released in japan.

my tv supports x.v. color, so i am taking advantage of that by having it turned on.

the "S.AF or super auto focus" as it is called on the lcd of this cam is great. it's called "high speed focus" in the menu. it keeps focus when zooming in and out.

even the low light performance is better than the hv20. i believe that comes from the higher resolution, slightly bigger sensor and being digic 3 versus digic 2

i can not wait until this is released here and reviewed and compared to sony's high end. i think they are going to be surprised, they as in sony fan boys.
why yes, i am a canon fan boy.

im getting a canon vixia hf10, and i was wondering if there were any monopods that were made for them, im recording football games, and i need to be able to lift up the camera and move it around, but also keep it still when my arm gets tired. I need a really cheap one too, as long as it kinda works its ok lol

I have the same issue. The Pixela software is confusing, and I can;t get the trial version of Sony Vegas Platinum 9 to discover the .mts files. Never ran into this sort of thing before. My computer only recognizes the HFS100 as a "card." I dont see why that should make a difference--
post #338 of 476
when navigating to the location of your mts files during import, hit the arrow on the drop down menu and select all files.

Thanks for the S11 report, Sam7 - very keen to get this when it appears in the US!

I purchased my Canon HF S10 a few weeks ago and love it.

I read almost every page on this thread, very informative and appreciated.

I do have a few questions regarding burning to DVD.

I currently have an iMac (Intel), iMove 09, Final Cut Express 4.0, iDVD, and Toast 10. I am open to other software recommendations as well.

I am shooting in 60i - FXP.

Q1. What file format is best to convert AVCHD to with little or no reduction in quality? I believe Final Cut Studio offers a format that retains or improves the quality, is this correct?

Q2. Will these other formats take more hard drive space then the AVCHD file structure? If so how much more, approximately?

Q3. Can I archive specific video clips instead of all the clips at one time? This way I can archive specific events to one DVD or folder.

Q4. I have used iMove to capture the AVCHD and then use iDVD to burn the video (I havent used Toast 10 yet), but the quality is not as good as I would like. I don't expect HD quality since I don't have a Blue Ray player; but I would like the quality to as good as a DVD movie. Is this possible? Am I using the wrong capture/burner or software combination?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bought an external mic (Rhode) and a lens hood which made the camera a bit unbalanced to hold. Just got a bolt on hand bracket and now it's great and really easy to hold, plus I've got somewhere for my PAG videolight. The handle was only about £10

Would you recommend shooting with XV color movies that you may give to other people? If you shoot with XV color and another person's television does not support XV color it could that cause color problems?

Would there be a way to convert an XV color recording to a non XV color to make it compatible with current televisions if necessary and perhaps eventually all televisions will support XV color and had we shot without it would be at a disadvantage?

Thanks

Can you provide any details (i.e make, model, etc.) on the lens hood?

Hey, it's just a 58mm threaded common or garden lens hood, there's a bunch of different ones on fleabay. The one in the photo is metal, but you can get rubber ones as well, just make sure it's 58mm. I've just got a rubber one that isn't as long as the one in the photo because it's a bit long and it crops the corner of the picture (vignetting) when on the widest angle. They're only a few quid each and make a big difference on a bright day. Hope this helps!

Hey, i'm new to the forums and I had a quick question. i just bought an HFS10 and after importing videos from the camera into imovie or FCP, i get a .mov file that's in AIC. i can't seem to find a converter on the internet that can turn it in to mkv. i know mpeg streamclip can convert AIC to other formats but not mkv. can anyone help me with this?

Ok, thanks. I was wondering because most of the camcorder hoods at B&H are rectangular without much length (and rather expensive), so I was wondering how well the longer round hood worked for you.

I was recording a soccer game the other day, where the only angle available was partially facing the low afternoon sun, and I was thinking that a hood would have helped to reduce the amount of lens flare I was getting.

Also, did you need to use a hotshoe adapter for the microphone? If so, do you have any details on which one you have?
Hague adapter from fleabay, a bit expensive but well made. The Rhode mic is much better made than the Canon offering and sounds really good. The other thing I got yesterday was a UV filter (also 58mm) which screws into the hood, between them give better contrast and less flare. Hope this helps. Going to Vietnam for two weeks on Friday followed by a week in Japan, so should really give the camera a proper workout...
Hi,

I am from Singapore. I recently purchase wrongly from USA through a friend a Canon DM-50 external mic when I should have bought the DM-100.
1. Are there any adapters in the market that I can purchase to use this mic DM-50?
2. Any solutions to my bad mistake?
I would like a UV or even polarizing filter to screw on the TL-H58 teleconverter....to stop glare. What's the lens diameter of the tele-converter (I know it screws onto a 58mm thread on the camcorder lens itself, but the tele-converter lens itself has a bigger diameter).

Q1. Yes. iMovie and FCE import as AIC to enable editing at full resolution. I've compare the original avchd to the aic files and they look identical.

Q2. Yes. Think of importing as unzipping a compressed file.

Q3. Yes.

Q4. There's a plugin for Toast 10 that will enable 1080 bluray quality video to be burn on standard DVDs at full res. From iMovie you export as a movie to QuickTime and selact 1080x1920 HD. Now you have an avchd file burned to a DVD that can be played in a BR player.

Thanks coolrda for the help.

Another issue I am running into is when importing from AVCHD into iMovie.

The clip date is correct but the time is off by 7 hours to early. A clip with a 8:00 AM time, thats the time the clip was taken and my Canon HF S10 shows the same time; but iMove is showing 1:00 AM.

I cant find an import setting in iMovie that will address this issue.

Anyone else having this problem? is there a fix or a setting?

Thanks

Check to see if the correct time zone is chosen in the Mac and camera.

I had previously tested the various modes, and thought I'd typically stick with 60i.

I have changed my mind. 24p + CineMode is a fine combination. With the effective shutter speed set to 1/48, moderate movement is not blurry. And with the custom dial as "exposure control," most lighting situations can be accommodated. The resulting images are amazing for a sub-kilobuck consumer camcorder.

I use Sony Vegas Pro 9 64-bit and DVD Architect 5 to render a blu-ray .ISO file for playback on my HTPC. Those handle the 1920x1080x24p very well; however, I render as MPEG2 at 40 Mbps average, because the AVC handling seems to be limted to 16 Mbps in the blu-ray mastering. Even given the greater efficiency of the AVC codec over MPEG2, that apparent limitation on the bitrate within DVD Architect is a disappointment.

Hi all. I just recently purchased the Vixia HFS10, and I just got it in the mail!!! Woohoo!!

So, I've been playing around with it for the last 2 hours, but I am really perplexed by something. It has frustrated me greatly in the last 2 hours. In sum, after I transfer recorded video files to my computer, the resolution of those videos is extremely low. Why is that?

The only setting I changed on the HFS10 was the "recording mode" -- which I changed from SP to MXP. I recorded a couple 2 minute clips of my dogs and transferred them to my computer via Pixela.

But, when I open the MTS video files with Windows Media Player 12 ("WMP"), it is very small (approximately 4" x 2.25"). I have WMP set so that it opens the video at its native resolution. Videos that I have taken with my Flip Mino HD open up in the native resolution -- huge, almost filling my monitor. Smaller videos open in their respectively smaller windows. But when I open the MTS file from the HFS10, it is very small.

When I check the video size through WMP, it indicates that the video is at 100% size. If I manually increase the size of the window, the image degrades (I'm pretty sure). But, I'm absolutely sure that WMP states that the video is at 100%.

I am running a quad-core 2.8Ghz Intel with an admittedly crappy onboard GMA 3100 video card. I am running Windows 7 and Windows Media Player 12. Despite the relatively low video card, the video should still play at 1080i or p on my computer. But it doesn't.....I just don't get it!

Any ideas? Is it something with the file type that I am unfamiliar with?

@ coolrda

I checked the Canon and its set for Los Angeles. My iMac is set for Pacific.

I used my cam this weekend and it shows the correct time; until I import into iMovie. iMovie shows the time seven hours earlier.

Thanks for the help.

@ coolrda

I tried Final Cut Express. Before its converted the time is off by seven hours in the Log and Transfer window.

I'm not sure if its a setting or a bug, but the iMac time zone is correct.

Hi all,
I have a question for all you Vixia owners...

I am torn between the Panny TM350 or the Canon HF-S10. The thing that really is leaning me toward the Panny is the Optical viewfinder (for shooting outdoors in bright light) and the 5.1 surround (and maybe the full focus ring).

Do any Canon owners miss any of these features? I am going to be using it as a family camera, so there will be a lot of outside day shooting (so I am wondering if the LCD will be a problem in sunlight).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is my first time using this Canon HD Camcorder. My old sony one using the MiniDV tape, I can easily connect to my dvd recorder and record the video from the camcorder.

But I am having trouble using this one. I finished some recording yesterday and just transfer all the video clips to my computer, but it shows 20091031170501.cpi 20091031170501.mts etc..... total 40 video clips.

What software do I use to make it a complete video so I can burn it to a DVD+R disc and save it ?

Please help me :-)
I bought the HFS10 today. After spending several hours testing the SONY top of the line model, I can tell you to get the Canon. The colors are more real and the camera is much more responsive
post #360 of 476
Hi I was wondering if you think that a data recovery company or a software program can recover data from a fully initialized memory card that hasn't been recorded on since initializing it.

I had footage on an external hard drive that crashed. I had backups on my computer but installed Windows 7 so I had reformatted my hard drive. For the time being the footage on the external hard drive had the only copies of the footage. The hard drive appears to have had a mechanical failure and the data was determined unrecoverable. My last hope is that perhaps footage could be recovered from the memory card since it hasn't been used since initializing it.

Any help would be appreciated.
