I cant remember seen those folders on the USB memory when uisng it on the DVD-player. How ever using the USB memory in the computer i see it.

You can test with using SMDK_FAT32 to format your USB memory.
You find the instructions how to use the program here: Instructions Format

Hkan,

Are you planning another update for the DV-410 or are you solely working on the DV-420 from this point forth? I would imagine that they are very similar and Id like to see some of the tweaks that you put into this play over on the 410, as the last update was a little less than a year ago
post #243 of 436
I actually not working on anything for the moment!
What are you looking for?
Hey Hkan,

Some things I noticed on the 410 that still seem to be issues are with the selector on the USB/Divx screen, when you scroll the selector looks a bit funky, I can try to get a photo if you need it. It used to be fine with older versions (I think around 2.2) but the last firmware (3.1) I saw the selection screen changed and the actual selector was off a bit (you would highlight a file, and then like two spots down there would be another little chuck of the selector highlighting something else)

Also when you play a Divx (I have no idea if you can fix this or not) it seems the the AR is just a bit off. If you play a file thats got an AR of 1.85, it looks closer to 1.78, if you play a file thats 1.78 it looks closer to 1.74. Maybe its firmware or maybe its how the chip handles the Xvids, I dont know (no AR problems with DVDs tho)

I do like the opening logo you choose for the 410 tho, is the 420 the same logo?
Anything else you might have changed on the 420 you didnt do on the 410?

Sry ahead of time for highjacking the 420 board with 410 questions, but it is almost the same machine, I actually dont even know what the differences are, if someone wants to tell me Id like to know

Edit: Hkan, I noticed also (which skipped my mind) that with the older firmware 2.2 and when I went to the newer firmware 3.1 that it turns SUBS on by default on DVDs if I had it set to english, I have to set subtitle languahe to something weird like Other (aa) so that when it sees there is no other (aa) subs it wont display them, this didnt happen in previous firmwares. I know you think this could be because of the authoring the DVDs for subs to be on by default but other DVD players I have didnt do it and it didnt do it before. Another thing I noticed is that sometimes for the language on the DVDs, I have it set as English and it will choose the directors commentary instead, this might be a DVD authoring problem, because if it sees 2 English tracks it might choose the wrong one, maybe make it choose the first one instead or something like that?

Hi Hkan.

I formatted my External TB HDD with the exact program you linked to.
It works well except for the issues that the OP stated. When I delete a file while connected to my computer it will sometimes put the file in the RECYCLED folder but sometimes it doesn't. I have to tell windows to let me "see" hidden files while connected to the computer where I can then delete the files that were put there. However the RECYCLED and SYSTEM folders always show up in the GUI while my HDD is attached to the DVD player. Strange but tolerable.

Yep... I did the same thing, but those 2 folders still in the way.
Ah well, thanks anyway!

I got a Pioneer DV-310 last August and it started giving me grief from the beginning, as I described in this post:.

Well, I should have returned it for a refund then, but it started working again, and, aside from one minor hiccup a few months back, has worked fine until last week. All of a sudden, the tray will no longer open. It comes on, I press the open/close button (on the remote or the unit itself), the display reads "open", but nothing happens. If I press the button again, it says "close", then "loading", then "No Disc". This is thoroughly annoying. I could send it back to where I purchased it, but I would have to pay shipping again for both directions, and I'd almost have enough in the shipping costs to buy another player.

EDIT: Even the USB connection doesn't work, as I just figured out. I can plug a flash drive in and press the DVD/USB button and the display says "open", then "Close", as if I have pressed the open/close button instead.

Anyway, the point is, I want to find out if there are any known issues like this with the Pioneer DV-420V model. From what I've read of this thread, I don't think anyone has mentioned any problems of this nature, but I thought I would ask in case there are other people reading who have had such a problem, or heard of it, but just haven't mentioned it here. I would really hate to buy another Pioneer player and have the same problems crop up again.

I think what I'll do this time though is buy a regular Region 1 unit, then apply a new firmware to make it region free. I am convinced that the people who modified my DV-310 did something to it when modifying it, because it was having issues from the very day I received it, and the front display has never been exactly "right". By that I mean it has always shown "SAMPLE" when I first turn the unit on, which I don't think is what it's supposed to show, and that makes me wonder exactly how the player was modified.

Will I be okay buying a Region 1 player from Amazon and applying the firmware myself? Also, I see on Hkan's site that there are two "StM" firmwares for that player. What is the difference between those two and which should I use?

Thanks,
Dmwc
I cant remember exactly what it should show when starting up but SAMPLE is not it. it should other say LOADING or WELCOME.

Do you got a disc in the player?
If you think you have do like this:
On off mode press OPEN/CLOSE button.
If that dont help.
What you could try is to reset your player, do like this:
on OFF mode, press and hold the STOP button and then press STANDBY/ON button.
It is the buttons on the player it self to be used.

Also can you check what firmware version you have installed on the player:
HOME MENU,INITIAL SETTINGS,go to OPTIONS (dont enter the submenu),press "DISPLAY" on the Remote Control
post #249 of 436
The reset procedure doesn't work and neither does pressing open/close while the player is off. The player comes on, but the tray still won't open. Luckily, I don't have a disc in the player, so I don't have to worry about getting anything out. I just can't put anything in.

The firmware version is: YJA8703A.

Does anyone notice in StM 2.1 if an .avi file has too long a filename it is missing from the file browser?

I seem to remember the older versions would simply truncate the filename. However it seems in 2.1 the browser cannot see the file at all. Is it possible the extension is being truncated, thus it seems like an invalid file type?

I would say this happens somewhere after 20 characters long, it doesn't have to be a crazy long length.

Is there more then one .(dot) in the file name?
Please give example for file name so i can test!
Hi,

Ok it seems to be a length issue.

1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456.avi works ok.

12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567.avi doesn't show up.

Thanks for checking into this!

Can you test V2.2 and see if it works now?
I can play at least mpg/mpeg files from a CD.

I just purchased the Pioneer 420V-K and updated it with the 2.2 firmware from pioneerfaq.info

It worked and i am seeing the new logo and menus. However i can not get other regions than #1 to play.

I tried to follow the instructions to enable multi-region but it doesn't work. Also when am i supposed to start the "Hold-enter" procedure? The firmware upgrade process automatically restarts the device. So i assume i'm not to hold Enter during the updgrade?

Thanks
Chris

Do not touch any buttons at all during the upgrade.
When the upgrade is done.
Turn the player on if it aint already and it should read NO DISC.
Take the remote control in you hand and point it towards the player.
Press and hold the ENTER button on the remote control till the player turn it self off.
When you restart it again it will be multiregional.
Awesome! Thanks Hkan.

Holding the enter button on the remote to power it off worked!

Here is a second question. i changed the video output to 1920 x 1080p since i have an HDTV (Sony 46w5100) and now i see little white pixels (maybe around 30 at a time) flash randomly on black background almost like stars (for example on the pioneer start screen or on a dark dvd with lots of black) any idea?

What about if you use the original firmware?
Is it still the same?
too late to check the original firmware. not sure if i should downgrade, now that the multi-region works...

The player will remain multiregional even if you up-/down-grade the player with another firmware.

Hi,
First of all I want to thank all of the members for their information on DV-420, I've learned a lot about my new player here.
I have a question about subtitle language support of this unit. Is there any chance to somehow add an unsupported language character set to the unit?

What language do you want support for?
If possible, I want Persian language support.
Thanks

I'm sorry but that is not possible for now!

i'm new here but i've been checking in on this thread for months now and i want to send a huge thanks to you Hkan for doing all these firmware adjustments for us... greatly appreciated!

the reason i'm posting is because last night i was watching a flick on a usb stick and i did a fast forward on it and the machine seized up. i pulled the stick, unplugged the machine for a few seconds then tried an avi on a dvd and the machine seized up again. so i reset the unit (stop button & standby/on button) and it's back to normal again. i'm using firmware 2.2. it's the first glitch i've seen in any of your firmware releases (except for the blue bar thing which was no big deal) and i was wondering if it was just me or if any other folks had experienced it.

don't misunderstand Hkan, i am not at all complaining. your work is ace sir! i just wanted to be sure the problem was isolated to me and my machine (the pioneer is sitting above an amp that gets fairly hot sometimes) and the only way i figured i could confirm it was to ask here.

thank folks!
