Baby safe AV Furniture for LCD TV

Thread Starter
I have a 40 inch LCD, Cable box, DVD player, Yamaha sound bar and a Squeezebox on a cheapo Ikea rack with glass shelves. My biggest issue is that my 1 year old son is gravitates to the electronics (just like his old man) throws things at the glass, etc.

Here's a picture of the set up:

I'd wallmount everything above the child, but there isn't enough wall space w/o the TV jutting out into a doorway or hallway. I'm looking for an AV cabinet that is about 3 feet wide by 20 inches deep with 2 extra shelves for the components that either has doors (ideally impervious to the child but allows IR beams to go through). Something heavy that won't move that I could mount the LCD onto would be even better. Any one have any suggestions? If not I may just get someone to build one.
Thanks.

The problem is, most TV stands today are made of glass and display the electronics prominently. I can only tell you what worked for me... Get the stand you like and reinforce with your son that he can't touch the things on the stand. I then went out and bought him a cheap DVD player and some inexpensive DVDs. He just liked turning the power on, hitting the eject button, putting the DVDs on the tray, and watching them go in. Sometimes he just liked watch the tray open and close.

Warning: The cheap plastic Fisher Price stuff never worked. I always had to get real electronics. I would recommend you save any old laptops/keyboards too, if your son is going to be anything like mine. This gives him something to play with (and copy you), without risking damage to the real thing.

Tthere is something like that at Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70144731 It has doors with stained glass that allows IR signals, but hides the internals. Then just put child safety locks on the doors.

Only problem is its 47" wide. I don't see how you'll fit a 46" TV in something that is only 3 feet wide. I have the more open version of the stand and my TV just fits it in with about an inch of space on both sides combined.

Then there's always the old standby known as parental monitoring and discipline.

Agreed.
I have a 2 1/2 year old and she has NEVER, not once, touched my electronics.
The worst she does is to try to get at the remote so she can put on Dora...

The OP has asked about "baby safe" AV furniture. A lot of the advice so far is not based on reality. "Parental monitoring and discipline"? Sure they are vital to raising a child, but no parent, ever, can monitor their child all the time. So we lock up the cleaning chemicals, cover electrical outlets and look for more baby safe AV furniture.
I also have a daughter 3 1/2 that has NEVER touched my AV equipment, but my 18 month old son is another mater. Tries to climb the glass shelves, waits until I'm watching him to turn the power button off and run, or his favorite banging the front of the t.v. screen (fortunately hd CRT at moment) all with a devilish grin and only when he has an audience.
Kids are all different, except boundaries at different ages.
Keep recommendations coming.
As for me, plan is to mount new flat panel on wall, leave av stand in front with components and center channel, and block cords/power supply by boxing with my Martin logans. Good luck.
