Here is my take on GT5 after a few days of play, sure some aren't going to like it but this is how I see GT5.
GT5 is a visual definition of incompetence and inconstancy in a product and features some of the most glaring issues seen this gen in a game because of its lack of focus and half-broken design. Let us start with the horrible Menus and all the work and effort just needed to get around them just to do simple things like get to the settings or to navigate around the photo tour mode, is simply idiotic and unintuitive as hell and involves for too much button clicking to do anything. Compounding this issue is the fact that PD didn't even attempt to optimize the Engine and even with the pre-install, the game's menu's as does the rest of it as well, features far too much loading. Who ever designed these menu's and then didn't attempt to lessen the loading needs to get shot, they are that bad.
As for as the graphics go, the game is a mixed bag in graphics and isn't consistent at all. You go from tracks and Cars that look utterly breath-taking one minute that instantly make you think this is the greatest looking game ever, too the next minute looking at the blandest, half-assed modeled tracks and cars the next that don't even match the graphics in a game like Ridge Racer 7 released years go. Seriously its like GT5 is two totally different games, even the tracks like London that look amazing have issues that distract from them graphically like the card board looking spectators that well, look just horrid next to the track details and just outright ruin the graphical immersion. Other issues are the crappy shadows that just look bad, and the pis-poor smoke. Another glaring issue that really shows how far behind the curve PD is now to Western Devs is their lame implementation of the ****-pit view in the Premium cars. In PGR4, a game released three years ago, playing in the cockpit view was a graphical masterpiece where realism was granted because as you played Dirt, smudges, rain, snow, etc accumulated the window. In GT5 nothing happens, your staring at sterile looking glass that doesn't properly convey that your racing in a real world at all. And let us not even get started on the Cockpit views of NFS: Shift which takes the ones in GT5 and kicks them straight in the junk. And the weather effects are ghastly, PGR4 which is three years older than GT5 completely trounces it in weather effects, its like PD didn't even attempt to try.
Also have to make mention of the special races and their god awful design, who ever designed them needs to get fired. The 2nd Nascar one is total trash because ever time you try to over take a car it hits you and your disqualified, and that Top Gear track one is just trash and boring as hell. Who in their right mind makes you race in slow as hell buses and then make it so that if you bump one or just slightly get off the track your disqualified. Broken design at its worse. Some might like them, I think they are horrid.
And I utterly hate the Used cars section, and how its up to luck if I can find the car I want. What a ghastly idea for a racing game, why did they make it so utterly wonky to purchase Standard Cars? Its by far one of the worst design features ever seen in a racing game, and makes utterly makes no sense at all. To further compound this issue is that some races have car restrictions, such as only pre-1979 Japanese manufactured cars. That is cool and something most racers have, what they don't have though is a retarded used car section like GT5 does that randomly chooses what cars are available meaning it can take forever to find a car that you can use. Its mean three days now, and I still cannot get a pre-1979 car, that is lame and is just evidence of some of the worst design ideas ever.
And other issue I saw last night has to do with your profile. I was trying to change my profile pic, and every time I tried to upload a pic it stated the upload failed even though it didn't. Also after changing my control layout three times in the settings only to not have it reflected in the races, I eventually had to completely quit the game to see them changed. LOL its called testing PD, do some next time please. And what is with this lame Custom Music implementation, why can I don't just go into a menu while racing and go to my play list like normal games PD?
And let us delve for a minute into this whole premium versus standard debacle, and how it ruins the game. I can get the graphic issues, but I cannot get the poor camera views in the Standard cars that are just crap, the fact that you cannot tune them, and the already mentioned idiotic used car store design. The standard cars are just a huge misstep on PD's part. And not to mention Forza 3 because I have tried not to compare them in this post so far, but the lack of store fronts and all the car design and paint options is severally apparent in their absence for a long time Forza 3 player. Its called evolution PD, something you are apparently opposed to.
Also I hate how the damage is set up, it should be selectable from the beginning and not dependent on your level, who thought that was a smart idea. And even then, when you do finally get it cranking, its just not very good and really doesn't have the impact on races that it does in another Racer that I will not name. And why hasn't PD fixed the crappy bumper car physics yet, sure the engine is better than it has been, but the unrealistic bumper car physics are still very much there. This was something PD promised to fix, yet still hasn't.
After 5 years and millions of dollars one thing is evident, PD has lost its way and might never regain it. GT5 goes from moments of sheer greatness and brilliance to moments of pure mediocrity, with the mediocrity being more prevalent IMO. GT5 is a good racer, but this is GT, good isn't enough. the GT series has always been about setting standards and PD has always been about perfection, but there are no standards to acheive this time for other racers since they have already bested GT5 in a great many things and PD was way of the mark as far as perfection goes. From EA this would be acceptable, but not from PD.
