GTPlanet is full of morons. Yamauchi has stated how long it takes to build a single car, especially compared to PSX and PS2. So faced with this, Polyphony could've:
1. Released the game with 200 cars only - This is the approach PD took with GT1 and GT2. But people would've bitched that the game took so long and only has 200 cars.
2. Delayed the game until 400 or 800 or 1000 cars are rendered like the 200 - people would've bitched that the game was taking forever.
3. keep the 200, throw in additional cars without that level of detail - people would bitch that not every car had those details.
The choice is a bit strange, I will admit that, but I guess they figured people would rather have 1000 cars to mess around with than 200.
I guess they could have also just not rendered at the level of detail they have - kept it down to Forza levels or whatever. But, they feel their audience wants this.
