thanks for the testing this tells that normal 16/44.1 khz is bit perfect without software modifications
pls try also this method if you have the posibility:
here is the link of a short 5 mb TRUE HD 24/96 FLAC file that you could try when you have HDMI audio option turned OFF

http://gimell-download.cctechnology....439d963b8.aspx

pls check with this sample if the receiver or external DAC locks on 96 khz.
In affirmative case we have a winner and the 24/96 files can be hacked out unmodified before optical transmitter or directly from I2S lines

and as far as i know HDMI 1.3 just passes multichannel DTS-HD to external receivers. thus normal 2 channel 24/96 hd audio should work on the used standard too.

in that other forum that guy said that - when disabling HDMI audio out from the menu it passed the 24/96 audio through optical out,so the limitation in that case was the 48 khz only on optical out when HDMI out was enabled...when HDMI audio out was disabled he said that it passed the whole 24/96 untouched through optical out to external receiver/DAC.

the wd tv is stated as supporting 24/96 audio but maybe only through HDMI out to an HDMI-IN compatible external receiver
This i'm not sure and cannot test ...

Lets focus on requests/bug reports people and lets break the vicious circle of trolling->answering->trolling e.t.c.

I admit that from the perspective of an english-speaking WDTV user, the request for better subtitle support seems obscure. But the WDTV is a product that has a multilingual buying group so the correct perspective is a global one.

According to this AV forum poll : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...1137712&page=3

We see that: subtitle related problems and functionality are the 3rd most requested thing for the WDTV , with the second one (HD power down) already solved!!

Additionally , let me clarify again that the 1.02 version introduced a bug in the way Greek subs were rendered and this was the main complaint of the Greek community. As for the quality of the font, indeed the font is poorly designed and some greek letters are almost unrecognizable , but this is honestly a minor issue.

Ok, I will try it now. Glad I did this test. I had my ps3 set to 48khz instead of a higher rate. I just retested with cd and it showed 196khz now. Streaming still showed only 48khz on same song.

many movies have ratio 2.35:1, it covers about 75% of the screen in 16:9 TVs so there are two belts 12% each that stays black all movie > what a waste and zooming even x2 is toooo much (dont mention about x4 and x8 )

Absolutely agree.

I also surprised why so important feature is out of discussion.
Everybody likes top/bottom black stripes?
Everybody likes watching x8 zoom movies?

I think should be only 2 zoom positions when PLAYING movie:
1 - fill 50% of top/bottom borders (to see 2.35:1 movies on 4:3 TV, for example)
2 - fill 100% of top/bottom borders

May be on PAUSE WD logic is ok.
Also agree with the above! The most logical thing would be to zoom in/out in 1 percent increements in order to have optimal control of the video image...

Iam also afraid that it has to do with limitations of how the video is decoded/displayed but the dedicated hardware... Maybe the decoder chip cannot do this , so the request although a fair one is undeliverable....

Tried thru HDMI and Toslink only. Could only get a 48 khz result either way. Changed from digital to stereo no effect. Streaming thru PS3 same rate. Could not do a direct play thru PS3 due to the fact it does not recognize flac files.
Hope this helps.

I remember someone talking about the technical difficulty of implementing incremental zooms. Something about the the power required to decode it on the fly is way more than the WDTV can handle. Doing 2x/4x/8x/etc zoom in/out is easy. Doing 1%/2%/37.443%/etc is not.

I don't know if this is true or not. It makes sense to me tho. Are there DVD/Bluray players that can do incremental zoom like this? Can the PCH? This is for my curiosity.

It's a bit annoying to FF-jump to an hour into the movie when it would
be just a few clicks away.

Not sure if this got answered already (I looked through the thread and didn't see it).

You can skip chapters by pressing the "Option" button and then choosing the icon on the far right that looks like a bunch of dots stacked over each other. Clicking enter on that icon will bring up a menu of the available chapters in the file.

Just got the WD media player. A nice player unit. However, I am surprised to find it can't play my .mov video shot with my Panasonic LX3. As I kow, a bunch of other brand cameras (Nikon and others) use mjpeg .mov format for their video too. Any chance WD will include this popular format in the supported video format in its firmware update? Thanks.
My wishlist for the x.08

1) Aspect Radiato options
2) The "Search"-key should be mapped to make it possible to enter how long in time, minutes and seconds into the film you would like to jump. Searching in 16x takes a loooong loooong time..
3) Possibility to choose the firmware you like based on themes.. One fimware, several colours to choose by several fimwares to download.
4) USB-CDRom-support
5) Scheduled shutdown based on time.
Not sure if anyone every responded to me... but has anyone else had playback problems with certain .mkvs with the new firmware? it made it so that some files the sound starts a second after the video so its out of sync the entire time. really lame. i had to downgrade to 1.01.02 which sucks because i liked the the better subs and being able to bring up the info bar pressing the enter button. i was using 1.02.05 btw. 06 and 07 both gave me this problem.

That could easily mean that if you owned "company_name" and didn't want to officially support any local market, you could just supply your local "non-dealers" and let them take the heat. In the long run the brand name might lose some of its appeal, but if the products were hot enough, there would never be an end to the "non-dealers" willing to make an easy buck - it could actually be to their own liking not having to provide support. And "company_name" would certainly benefit by not having to provide support for those "grey" sales. Therefore, "company_name" should be held liable in the first place, to avoid such a chain of events even starting to form.

Absolutely disagree.

Why spend time on changing the way the studio/director/production company decided to shoot the film. I want to see all the things in the film that were intended to be shown. Pan 'n Scan is evil. OAR rocks!

I think it has more to do with the licensing of the .mov files. I believe it was said before that in order to officially support this (much like DTS downmixing) WD would need to pay Apple so that they could add it. IMO like DTS, DVD Menus, ect..., we may never see .mov file support officially if ever. Hte more things they add to this unit that require a license to work the higher the cost is for them. This would in turn most likely increase the cost of the unit, which IMO is one of its strong selling points.

Have the 1.02.07 fw installed and it is mostly working great. My WD Essential 1TB drive spins down as far as I can tell even though the light stays on.

My only problem is that even when the WD TV is turned off, the optical out stays ON (I can see red light coming from the toslink). I have an optical combiner with a PS3 and the WD TV sharing the one and only optical connection on my receiver. With the WD TV's optical always ON it interferes with my PS3 sound. I have to physically disconnect the WD TV's optical conn to use my PS3.

I know my problem may not be common but I would appreciate this being considered by WD along with generally powering down the WD TV when it is off as it does get warm.

Thanks.

Well since Greece is listed on WDs site wiht places where you can buy the WD, I think at this point its a dead issue. There are places though that import players from wholesalers and sell products that are not supported\\sold locally by a company. In this case I would tend to agree with others that, "official" support would go before "non-official" support.

Lets not even get into that discussion here. This topic has been debated to death on this forum. I am in your boat (prefer OAR\\IAR whenever possible), but there are those that prefer a "fullscreen" of picture for whatever reason. Just something you have to get used to\\ignore these days

You are not the only one . I have found though that when I have my WD off for a period of time that the Optical does loose power\\connection and my main connection (HD-DVR) will be able to take over. In some cases though I do have to unplug the Optical from the back of the WD in order to get audio from the HD-DVR.

Ph8te, appreciate the response. I have had my WD TV off for about 1.5hrs and the toslink is still shows the red light - looks like mine does not power down or timeout even after a reasonable time.

Forgot to say a general "thank you" on my first post. The forum has been a great source of info for a long time even though I just officially registered. Thanks for all the great information.

.mov files ARE supported (H264,MP4) but not mjpeg. This was the single decideing factor when I first saw the unit on the shelf at the store. It plays my Aiptek camcorder's 1080p files without issue, so it turned out to be a keeper for me. Perhaps mjpeg will be included in a future release, as it does seem to be used by a lot of flash based recorders these days, but I'm afraid there hasn't been much noise about it on the forum, so then again, perhaps not.

For the AVC file your Ref frames might be too high, but I am not 100% sure.....
these recent discoveries aren't directly related to what WD identified as changed for .07 firmware and I don't know if they were always like this...BUT:

1. personally if I select videos by DATE, I would much prefer to see it sorted by most recent to oldest, not the other way around like it does presently

2. similarly, if I select RECENT videos, it also appears to be sorted by oldest viewed with most recent viewed at the end...AND...(as best I can tell) it also appears to have a bug where within that sort it displays the individual pages of videos by most recent first...for eg, if you just watched a flick and go into that menu, your just viewed film will appear on the last page of the list but it will be on the top of the list for that page.

3. if you go into a menu like photos or music and the folder is empty, it seems to me that having the BACK key functional here would be more consistent with overall usage of the unit...at present you have to hit ENTER to respond to the onscreen message (minor)

4. with all the various needs to potentially have to exit a movie in order to go tweak a system/video menu setting, it would be great if there was a more direct path back to the movie...I was thinking that if the wdtv could keep track of it's prior states (which it pretty much does already when it drills its way back up from video through subfolders back to higher level menus...), then maybe the BACK key functionality could be expanded to backtrack its way back to the movie, may just mean enabling it's navigation from the main menu....so for eg you go from movie to HOME(main) to SYSTEM submenus...and then by hitting BACK you get back to HOME and then BACK again would drop you into the movie again...no harm no foul !

(I apologize that that one isn't really a release bug but I didn't want to spray my handful of ideas across 2-3 different forums)

You can skip chapters by pressing the "Option" button and then choosing the icon on the far right that looks like a bunch of dots stacked over each other. Clicking enter on that icon will bring up a menu of the available chapters in the file.

Thanks guys, I didn't know that. I tried that icon before but it had no function,
my guess it was in an avi-file without chapter-information.
Now I'm totally happy

I have a similar problem with my files. When I start the video, initially it plays fine. But if I change the audio track the aspect ratio compresses about 10% on each side, so that I have black bars on the right and left of the video. Mine is not quite 4:3 size when it does this. I have encoded both of these from my personal DVDs.

(I apologize that that one isn't really a release bug but I didn't want to spray my handful of ideas across 2-3 different forums)

Not sure if this helps, but if you are watching a movie and exit all the way out all yoiu have to do is go to the recents selection and select the movie. Once the movei is selected you have the option of starting the movie from where you left off or the beginning of the movie. Its about 3 or so clicks, IMO thats pretty minimal.

Toslink is not limited to 20bit 48KHz, because I can link at anytime my DAC and DSP equipment together at 24/96 using a toslink fiber optic cable.

However, a limitation may exist on the WD TV ...
