I've ordered another copy; hopefully that will help. Other BDs and DVDs play fine (ended up watching Brave on BD instead) so I don't think it's a laser issue.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and yes, I'm using the latest firmware, v3.73.

Got a replacement disc from Netflix, again it looked pristine, but no go....still locks up before the menu comes up. Out of curiousity, I pressed stop, waited a few seconds, then pressed Top Menu on the remote. Bingo! It loaded the menu and I was able to play the movie from there. After the end of the movie though, it locked up when trying to return to the menu.

After all the effort, I didn't really like the movie.......lol!

Anyway after gleaming info from here I cleared BR memory and switched color output to 0-255 from auto and my Pannys input to auto and Bam! It plays. Thanks to all.

I also tried clearing the memory, but that didn't work for me. I wonder how switching the color output 0-255 would make any difference?? Perhaps it was just the act of clearing the memory did it for you like an eariler poster?

The menu and the movie are recorded on disc at different frame rates. You might try setting your player to output a fixed 1080p. Sometimes that helps. Making sure deep-color is disabled in the player often helps, too.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure my player is already set that way since I like the player to do the upscaling of DVDs. I appreciate the suggestion. smile.gif However, I've already returned the disc so I have no way of testing your suggestion.

You can't roll back the firmware.

Turns out my original problem of having no picture was all due to my Sony Bravia TV. I unplugged the TV to reset it and the HDMI was back to working. After I went through all of this I inserted "Prometheus" into my 23FD and it worked. I didn't actually play the movie though because I didn't have time to watch it. Now tonight I have time to watch it and the damn movie isn't working. I played the movie just fine in my other blu ray player which is made by Sony. I paid like a 130 bucks for the Sony player and allot more for the Pioneer. There was another guy on here that said his cheap Insignia blu ray player plays everything. So why do these cheap players always work and these expensive "top of the line" player ones don't??? I unplugged my Pioneer and now the movie works. I tried "erasing data" but I am not hooked up to the internet so this function would let me do anything. I did some of the other guys suggestions about changing this or that and nothing worked. So anyone know why "unplugging" my Pioneer player gets "Prometheus" to work? Anything I can change here so I don't have further problems? Thanks

^^
I'd bet the Sony player (and maybe the Insignia) have more up to date firmware than your Pioneer. Without continual updates, our Pioneer players will eventually be obsolete as far as playing some of the newer discs. This is the single stupidest aspect of the Bluray system I can think of.
The Insignia hasn't had a update for a couple of years. I believe that these high end players somehow get in their own way when syncing up with panels.

Yup. I own a Pioneer Elite BdP-HD1 bought for near $2K (Canadian) that still work perfectly except for new movies. frown.gif

Quite in deed very stupid. Also some manufacturer’s firmware are more robust than others. The firmware in my Sony BDP-S5000ES is over 3 years old and there have been several firmwares since that time and it played Prometheus without an issue. I just updated my BDP-320 to 3.73 from 3.70 as I don't update firmware unless I am having an issue. Prometheus is a no go. I have another blu-ray where I haven't updated the firmware in almost 18 months and no problem playing Prometheus. If Pioneer is not going offer frequent firmware, then their updates need to be more robust.mad.gif

Yeah, when I finally decided to upgrade to a near reference BD player I made the assumption that it would have a computer's planned obsolescence, so with a huge DVD collection and no BDs at the time, I bought the 23FD during a half price sale strictly for its DVD up-scaling and audio capability, which after hundreds of hours still works just fine with its original V3.4 firmware.

Every once in awhile I play a recent BD movie [though not Prometheus] and surprisingly they play fine also except for not being able to resume if stopped and taking seemingly forever to load [up to 20+ min.! on a couple I timed]. Fortunately, so far, 'freezing' the picture long enough to make a 'pit stop' hasn't proven to be too much for it, but I assume it's shortening its life span somewhat.

Prometheus played just fine in my BDP-320...I don't think its a firmware issue, more likely a run of bad disks.

It plays in 2 of my other blu-ray players, so I don't think it is a run of bad disks. Hopefully, this doesn't mean that my drive is failing.eek.gif

I have tried to play a couple of Blu-Ray's that my 320 had played before and now it's a no go. It may be going on it's last legs, Ive had it a few years but I don't think that I have played a super amount of DVD's thru it maybe I'm wrong.
If you've had it a few years, dust might have accumulated on the laser optics assembly. If you try a cleaning disc, make sure it's one intended for blu-ray players. DVD cleaners can cause damage because the separation is different between the optics and the disc.

Or maybe the memory is full. Try erasing the memory.

Just a quick question, does this player support AVCHD discs (DVD and BD)?

Thanks smile.gif
Definitely yes. I created several AVCHD of my family movies both on DVD and on BD, they play no problem.

Great, thanks much! smile.gif

I have the BDP 320. Firmware update 3.72 and cannot play the new Fox blu-ray of HITCHCOCK. Plays the Fox fanfare and then dies ... The disc is a rental from Netflix. Help.
It seems that those who clear the internal memory in their blu ray players find success on their second attempt to play the disc in question.

Being from Netflix it could be the disc, even it it looks fine. You might also update to the latest firmware, v3.73. As also suggested, clear the internal memory.

I am having the same problem with Life of Pi on my 23fd - I get the 20th Century Fox fanfare screen and then nothing, the screen just goes black. The disc is not a rental, surface looks fine. I cleared all internal memory and that didn't solve the problem. I am on firmware 3.72, but given that 3.73 came out before this movie was released I doubt that firmware is the issue (although I'll try an update in the morning just in case). Has anyone else had any problems playing Life of Pi?

See my post (3 above yours). It might do the trick.

No problems here with Life of Pi (Netflix Rental) on my 320 (v3.73). The visuals in this movie are incredible, btw (viewed on a 60" Kuro).
Nope, already tried clearing memory. Oh well, I'll try updating to 3.73 and if that doesn't work it may be a defective disc.

Thanks

.. good-day fellow Pioneer Aficionado(s),

been off-the-grid lately w/ the AVSForums, contributing previously on the Plasma threads.

anyway .. have the Pioneer bdp-23fd and have been researching the newer firmwares available.

Pioneer's home site for this blu-ray player is extremely vague with regards to what exactly is changed/modified w/ their updated firmwares.

I began looking at Cinavia & its influence on players and whether or not my player was affected; again, the firmware pdf's were no help.

Discovered (it seems) this protection was being added to OD players 'as of' Feb 2012.

I have found 'downloadable' firmware for my player (_23FD) starting w/ v3.69 thru v3.73, the latter being at Pioneer's site; also, found v3.72(b)
at a site which supports the bdp-320 and lx52 .. which is said to be identical to the 23FD.

My point of discussion is to ask other members their feedback regarding Cinavia and our Pioneer players .. and with the firmware updates ..
are Owners 'only updating' when they have a Blu-ray giving them problems(??)

Appreciate greatly any details that can be provided. : )
