Polk Center Channel - Sony Floorstanding - Help

I was wondering if anyone could help me out, i was looking to purchase a new set of Sony SSF-5000 speakers for my home theater, and currently i have a Polk 5-1/4 inch Center Channel (can't think of the model #, couple years old). Would it be alright for me to add the Sony speakers with the Polk center channel - or would the sound not match up?

If anyone has any advice for me i would love to hear it, thanks so much!

The general rule is that you should match your front three (left, right, and center) with either identical speakers or the same brand and product line. Most manufacturers (Polk included) offer center channel speakers that have been designed to match a line of tower or bookshelf speakers. This will give you the best chance to acheive a cohesive front soundstage.
Without knowing your budget, it's hard to say more, except that I am sure you can do better than those Sony speakers, even for the $110 asked on Amazon.

The matching sony center is $99.00 so it really isnt that expensive.

A better sonic match for the sony speakers, than polk would be the Insignia NSHT51 speaker package.

Thanks for the quick response, i believe the Center Channel that i am trying to match up with is part of the CSR Line. I am looking to spend anywhere from $100 - $200 for the pair of speakers. Any advice as to wear i should look, or for any speakers that would be a better match than the Sony's?

Thanks for the help Raymond, however i believe i am looking at the flip side of the case you presented - i currently have and would like to keep the Polk Center Channel, and am looking to add a new pair of Floorstanding Speakers to fit the theatre. I would prefer not to replace the center channel, as its only a few years old and lightly used up to this point. But any advice you could give as to a new set of speakers to pair up with the Polk center channel would be appreciated.

Polk R50 from Fry's. With shipping (check the quote for 1 or 2 in the shopping cart) you should still be < $200.

Update, the center channel that i have is the CSM model, not the CSR. So i assume with the M model i would want to look at the M model floorstanding speakers? Anyone pair up the CSM with the R50's? or am i best suited staying with the M ...

Thanks everyone.

I'm using the CSM with R50's in the bedroom set up.
Actually sounds pretty good to me. Don't hear too much about the CSM center around many of the AV forums but as I said I am pleased.
Not sure what Fry's price is right now but they frequently sell them for about 70 bucks each.

Just checked and Fry's has the Cherry finsh on the R50 for 69.99 right now but the black finish is 199. Figure that out
They will put the black at the lower price eventually.

Looks like i could get the M50's (in black) from newegg for $180 shipped, compared to the R50's (cherry) from frys for around $175. I would prefer the black in terms of my setup, but i don't think i would sacrifice quality if the cherry's were the better deal.

Any idea which one of these sets would match up best with the CSM? I have been reading that its not a wise idea to have different tweeter sizes between the center channel and the front speakers, which i believe would be the case with the M 50's (1 inch tweeter, CSM has 3/4 inch tweeter) ... will this make a big difference?
