Official Samsung LNxxB650 Calibration/Settings Thread - Page 7

I'm playing COD MW2 right now on my PS3 and 32" B650 and there's no (noticeable) input lag with game mode off. The game runs natively at 1080p too, which is somewhat rare for a PS3 game.

is a HIGH blacklight bad? will the life of the TV lower a lot?

I have mine on movie mode and its dark... so I put the backlight at 9.

Hey guys, any recommendations for "All Purpose Viewing" settings for the LN55B650?

I'm looking for settings that are not specifically for watching movies, but work well for mostly watching TV (both HD & SD) with an occasional PS3 game or DVD/BD.

Since my wife and 6 yr old son often watch TV, I don't wanna have to bounce around in the menu from one mode to another -- so I'm looking for general purpose settings.

If it helps, we seem to prefer the "Natural" mode. Movie mode is too dark for our taste -- and while we like a bright picture, Standard seems just a bit too bright at times. Also, we have Comcast hooked up via Component cables through an 8300HD cable box.

Any suggestions?

i jus got this TV about 2 days ago and i put those settings in and they are pretty much PERFECT, for a dark dark room. during the day change the backlight to 6-7 imo for normal, lower it when you watch w/o light. lovin that picture.

i use those settings for blu-ray and QAM HD, but i'm lookin for something for game mode, as you have to use Standard Setting. I'm gonna use it for Wii over component, Xbox 360 over component, and PS3 games over HDMI (which is also my blu-ray player settings i use up top,changing back and fourth).

does anyone have some good suggestions for settings for game mode? I know it's just video games so it doesn't have to be super accurate but if someone could suggest some decent settings i would appreciate it. (couldn't find in this thread). going into standard game mode is jus way too overdone. thanks again.

As far as I know, it can't be turned off, but the MOVIE mode is the only setting where auto-dimming is not utilized. That's probably the only way to eliminate it.

Anyone else here feel that the Movie Mode is too dull, dark/dim?

I think it's perfectly fine since you can up the backlight as desired to make it as bright as you want. It's not actually dull, you're just comparing it to pic modes that are overblown by comparison with bluish whites and excessively bright and over saturated colors (not to mention non-linear gamma that's been boosted way too far). You're eyes are just picking up on the differences between the other modes and movie mode; movie mode isn't actually too dull or dim.

If you're are referring to CE dimming in Movie mode, that's a SM setting that was off by default on my TV. I actually turned it on last night since I found it keeps dark scenes dark while allowing the bright and mid-level scenes to be as bright as your backlight and contrast settings allow them to be. This feature simply dims the backlight automatically whenever the APL (average picture level) is low enough.

But it certainly hides detail in dark scenes and dark movies. The only way I've been able to restore that detail is by upping the DRC to low and lowering the backlight. Yes, when it's set to OFF, brighter scenes are better, as well as facial gradations. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Haven't fouind any option to turn this on or off.

Its under Advanced, CE Dimming, 'Dimming in Movie' set to ON or OFF based on your preferences.

Must not be available on the B650

So, you're saying once you hover over advanced and press 0000, there's no section labeled 'CE dimming' on your TV? Maybe you have a earlier build date or version of the TV or a non-US model? I got my TV just one month ago.

A lot of people use movie mode.
I prefer Natural mode if it were to be between those two you mentioned.

Oh, absolutely, me too. I don't like Movie mode. But Standard is a bit too light/bright and Natural is just a tad too dim/dark -- so I'd like something in-between the two.

In case you missed it, try these settings in MOVIE mode. It will be brighter with more details than NATURAL. But if it's still too dark (which it usually is for movies like BLADE RUNNER, DARK CITY, etc.) then turn the DC to low and bring down the backlight.

Are you sure? Well, I'll try it -- but these settings look like they'd produce a darker picture than Natural, not brighter.


EDIT: Just tried it. Thanks for the suggestion, but there's no way these settings are "brighter with more details than NATURAL."

SoundsGood, hate to break it but since you have a rare S panel 55"b650, you won't be able to get a pretty good calibration from other owners here with a C panel 55"b650 considering that those panels will differ in the calibration.

Calibration of a S panel used on another S panel shouldn't differ drastically from each other in optimization; and so is vice versa with a C panel. Our "C" panel calibration will be very much different to your panel.

You should try looking for settings on the similar 46"b650 s panels
