Clyde Phillips Inks New Deal With Lionsgate TV, Talks About Rebooting ‘Nurse Jackie’
By Nellie Andreeva, Deadline.com - Aug. 7, 2012

EXCLUSIVE: Clyde Phillips has signed a new two-year overall deal with Lionsgate Television. Phillips recently joined Lionsgate’s dark comedy Nurse Jackie, and his duties as executive producer/showrunner on the Showtime series will fall under his new pact with Lionsgate, which also covers development.

Phillips was already talking to Lionsgate about renewing his overall deal when the opportunity to take over Nurse Jackie came up when original showrunners Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius stepped down. “All the stars alined,” Phillips said. “I though Nurse Jackie was really good, and I thought it could be great.” He also liked the prospect of working with Nurse Jackie star/exec producer Edie Falco and the fact that he was not asked to just come in and “babysit” an established series. “I was asked to reboot the show, and that’s a challenge I willingly and happily accept.”

To do that, Phillips has assembled a team of writers, including bringing in longtime friend, comedy veteran Tom Straw, as an executive producer. The two first worked together on Phillips’ Fox comedy series Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, on which Straw served as co-executive producer. Straw’s credits include Grace Under Fire, Cosby, Whoopi and most recently, The Late late Show With Craig Ferguson. Phillips’ team also includes Michael Davidoff & Bill Rosenthal (Men At Work) as Co-Executive Producers; Cindy Caponera (Saturday Night Live), current Nurse Jackie scribe, playwright Liz Flahive as Supervising Producers; Daniele Nathanson (CSI: NY) as Executive Story Editor; Gina Gold & Aurorae Khoo (Running Wilde) as Story Editors; and Abe Sylvia (Dirty Girl) as Staff Writer. Despite the fact that Nurse Jackie was given a fifth-season order with Phillips at the helm at the tail-end of the traditional staffing season when many sought-after writers are already locked in, “we got everybody we wanted from the highest echelon to staff writers,” Phillips said. He has spent the past month in the writers room and is getting ready to pitch their ideas for next season. Because he hasn’t discussed them with the network yet, Phillips was hesitant about revealing much about Nurse Jackie‘s fifth season, but said that it will focus on “the aspect of the newly sober Nurse Jackie character facing the consequences of what she has done to herself and others.” I hear that, in addition to the writer additions, the show’s cast will also likely undergo some tweaking.

The opportunity to work on Nurse Jackie was great, but Phillips said he wanted to re-sign with Lionsgate TV, where the former Dexter showrunner had been since 2010, even before that came along. “It’s a writers and producer dream there; they have innovative ways not only to put shows on but also keep them on the air,” he said.

It will be interesting to see what the results of the cast tweaking will be.

Great season opener.

Dr. O'Hara leaving is bizarre, but I'm glad to see the rest of the cast back. I missed "the gang." Nice to see Eddie re-hired of course. The new military doctor seems cool and smart.

Jackie, getting the famous musician/sports player to pay for the new CT machine when the police only wanted autographs tongue.gif

Hospital stuff freaks me out though. Hate surgery, diseases, etc. Hopefully I never need major trauma care frown.gif

Edit: It's weird not having a program that airs directly after Nurse Jackie. They're just showing a repeat of the season premier. A year ago, United States of Tara followed and I thought they went great together. I miss that show.

This is the first season with the new creative team. I notice a different style, but it's not an unpleasant change.

I really enjoyed the opener. I am not sad to see O'Hara go. I could barely understand half of what she was saying most of the time.

Kevin still seems so angry. I understand that Jackie lied to him and cheated on him, but she was/is a drug addict. That fact that she was sleeping with the pharmacist should provide him with a bit of solace. I don't care if they get back together again, but when they are together you see more of him and the girls and that adds to the show.

An "OK" episode last night. Gracie seems really upset with anger. Glad that Jackie was able to see the girls and O'Hara (via webcast) on her birthday.

EASILY The top show around. Hilarious all around and loved every episode (I was behind).

Hard to believe Adam Ferrara (cop hitting on jackie) is an actor. I only know him from Top Gear USA.

I thought Charlie died. Is Jackie talking to voicemails or the father? Did I miss something here? tongue.gif

1) Charlie is dead.

2) Jackie has been leaving voicemails since she doesn't have anyone else (sponsor) that she can talk to about those things ...

Of course, if you caught the coming next week segment ...

I am enjoying this season but the show has a very different feel. The pace is different and the interactions between characters is different. No doubt this is due to the new team creating and producing the show.

Very much so, far too warm and fuzzy.

That's a good way to put it. It is more interesting when people are under each other's skin. Plus, working an ER has to be hectic 24/7. It doesn't work if we see 1 patient per show, or at least the minimal effects of the medicine.

Thanks for the posting. I thought she could be leaving voice mails.

As a rule, I don't typically watch the previews for next weeks program.

It was with a bit more "grit" in the past. The good ER's are fun to transport the patients to. With the right ER staff it is grueling and very stressful but fun to interact with the staff and some patients! wink.gif

Two things:

Ever since his stint on Boardwalk Empire, I get physically uncomfortable whenever I see Bobby Cannavale on screen. He was just that good. I'm glad to see him again.

I have no appropriate way to say this, but Betty Gilpin has an amazing rack. Even my wife said "wow" when she took her top off. That might be a bigger surprise than Dr. Cruz coming back.

Do you watch the episodes on line before they are shown on SHO?
Sometimes. Depending on how busy the weekend is. I am really confused sometimes why episodes are different on my HTPC than on my DVR. Why does SHO do that?
It doesn't make sense. I had heard that Betty took out the goods but that episode doesn't air on Showtime until Sunday.

Her character doesn't really fit in. The show has gotten less crazy but now they have a resident who seems as dumb as can be. Maybe she is a female cooper.

Thanks for that ... for a while there, I thought I was zapped forward in time.

I really don't feel that the new characters add much; the lazy doctor using her looks to get by and the smart ER chief seem a little cliche. I would expect them on other shows but Nurse Jackie always seemed to avoid cliched characters which was a big part of it's appeal. I'll still watch, if only for that core group that is still so good.

Great episode tonight. Gracie at the rave! Glad she realized that it wasn't for her and needed to leave. Although, not sure about walking in downtown all by herself.

Gunshot wound while in labor eek.gif
That must have been something else.

Dr. Cruz's scene was really sad. Glad that Jackie made love to him though. Talk about leaving immediately after sex

Gloria catching the new ER chief's mistake was good. I'm sure she felt proud.

I agree that this week's Nurse Jackie episode was wonderful. The scene in which Jackie hooked up with Dr. Cruz, almost entirely because of her understanding of and love for Curz's dead son, moved me. I also thought Jackie's drive home after picking up her daughter on the street was very smart. Both of them were thinking about what they had done and mostly regretting it. For a 30 minute comedy show, this week's episode contained an amazing amount of strong stuff.
