Jack always says. the bluray is in the mail! BTILC. got it wahoo :)

today was shopping around in the netherlands and tried my luck at famous cd /dvd shop here in the netherlands.

and much to my delight i found big trouble in little china on bluray, which if i am not mistaken wont be released until next week.

the disc is released by fox here in the netherlands and carries a pricetag of 25 euro.

about the disc itself.

first of all for the importers i can tell you it is region free. i checked it on a japanese ps3 and american ps3 and worked fine.

second the loading of the disc is kinda weird.

you see a play button coming up in grey, then it goes to black again. you see a fortunate cookie for a second, then goes back to grey play button again. then after sometime the fox logo comes and the menu starts after it.

talking about the menu. it looks great. very nice menu full of action pieces of the movie.

you can change menu items by clicking on the fortune cookie.

extras are slim on this movie.

there are some deleted scenes
a longer endsequence
videoclip
trailers and that is it.

about the picture quality of the movie. i picked some scenes to check and...

it is a mixed bag. some scenes look awesome. some look to much dnr is applied for my taste.

to be honest the openings scene on the orginal dvd was not that good either. beginning of the truck scene was not so good too. so on that part i already had a feeling it would not be good either on bluray. and it shows. they reduced the noise and also the detail unfortunate. still it does not look as bad as fightclub.

however where things really start to pick up is when jack goes goes gambling and here the picture looks great, ofcourse not as good as a 2009 movie. but great for a movies of the eighties. there is little noise, but lots of detail. the picture looks also natural. not over sharpened. so i guess this is really how it looks like on film.

now i did not yet watched it complete yet. so i will give updates after i watched it.

about the Audio...

it freaking rules! this is actually the biggest upgrade for this movie. the audio is so much better then the standard dvd track. it is like you hearing a whole new movie. the DTS-HD track simply blast through the speakers. awesome

audio and subtitles included

English DTS HD 5.1
French DTS 5.1
German DTS 5.1

subs , dutch,french, english, german

menus , dutch, french, english, german.

videobitrate is around 30 AVC encode.

is there 1 thing i really dislike? yes there is. the cover. it is a very bad cover. when you actually put the disc in your ps3 you see the orginal VHS video cover. and i wonder why they didnt use that for the the bluray. it is so much better then the one we have now.

anyway cant wait for tonight. will give a further update on overal PQ

also for the people intrested in fargo. it is out as well.

Look forward to getting a copy as well.

Thanks for the info. I just watched this for the first time on DVD a couple months ago. Great film!
Are you gonna pick up Fargo?

i didnt pick up fargo. although it is a good movie. it is not really on my soon to buy list. i will wait till is around 15 euro before i pick it up.

yesterday i watched the complete movie of big trouble in little china and i have to say it is a very nice release overall. dnr is applied. not to extension of patton, but in a mild form. for the most time it does not distract me. however in the indoor truck scenes it does distract me. detail is low and then with dnr. faces look a bit to waxed for me.

also what i found odd is that when i checked the extended ending of the workprint. the door is blue. while in the bluray movie the door at the end is green.

so how would i rate this movie.

if your a big fan of this movie it is a no brainer. the picture and audio quality alone is for around 80% a big upgrade over the dvd. and maybe considering the print, the best we can ever have.

however if your expecting james bond quality or blade runner quality, you will be in for a dissapointment.

best movie i can compare it too, is tango and Cash. if you like that picture quality, then you will probably like this 1 as well.

Thanks for the writeup! My copy is winging it's way to me at this very moment. It's one of my favorite movies and unfortunately, it has never been treated right on any previous format. I'm not gonna worry about DNR until I've actually seen it, as a lot of '80s movies have a soft look, that makes some automatically assume they've been noise reduced.

I hope the DTS-HD-MA track has been mixed properly as well, the Dts 4.0 track on the 2-disc DVD release was horrible.

Is the Kurt Russell/John Carpenter audio commentary on there?

about the audio. if it is mixed rigth difficult to say/. i dont have the orginal master track here. i can only compare it to the dvd i got here. and then the bluray is milestones better.

about the soft picture. lethal weapon 2 on bluray has a soft picture. however BTILC bluray for the most part has a strong picture. some close up scenes were the girl shows their light green eyes is a bit soft. however most of the others scenes are very nice.

if your just as big of a fan of this movie you will be happy. also the audio track with carpenter and russel stands on this track.

where can we order this?

one of my families favorites and I must have it NOW!!

thanks for the comments, I always considered the DTS track on the DVD very well done, so this should be great in the audio department

What?!!
To me, it always sounded like one of those mixes where they simply split the music track across the different channels. It reminds me of the Dts track on First Blood Part 2, the 2 disc Lionsgate release, no real bass for explosions and gunfire just sounded dead and flat in the mix, the studio clearly couldn't be bothered to do a proper remix with new foley work, etc. Switching back to the 2.0 tracks on both these movies improved things incredibly.

I sold my old 2 disc DVD so it's been a while since I watched the film. Are there Chinese spoken parts in the film? If so, on the BD, are the English subs burned in?

Freerecordshop.nl is where I ordered it. Bit disappointed with Mediadis, as their service is always excellent.

Cost 26.96 Euros inc shipping to the UK.

Thanks but I can't find it on that site? Do you have a link as a search only brings up the DVD version.

The only translations into English are done via actual characters within the movie. There are no subtitles.

Ditto unless a North American release is issued soon.

Okay guys Mediadis.com have it up for order for the best priced shipped I have seen. They also remove TAX for overseas purchase it seems. My total shipped to Australia is 23.13 Euro or around $31 US Shipped. Which is much cheaper than the $58US Shipped for the Japan version from Amazon.co.jp

Also the Mediadis site is in English to which makes it easier to order

Just placed my order-

The last DVD release of this film was very, very good for its age.
Carpenter's best IMO.
An easy BD buy for me, one of the wife's favs.
