Thank you in Advance for your reply .

I bought an Emotiva UPA-7 amp to drive a set of Infinity Interludes, IL40 mains and IL30 surrounds. That picked up the mid bass response by a large margin. I had been using an HK AVR 520 before that, an adequate - if somewhat dated AVR (2001?). The UPA-7 revealed to me the harshness of titanium tweeters better than the 520 ever could. I decided to look for a better speaker, and what better choice than from where I bought the amp from? I had by that time already bought the Emotiva ERD-1 surround speakers, which I am completely delighted with. I figured if the 8.3s didn't deliver, I could send them back (costly yes, but better than something I could not live with - bad speakers) if I didn't like them.

I AB'ed the 8.3s and IL40s for less than an hour. Thats all it took! - even with the 8.3s not being broke in yet - to realize how much better they are in the mid range - and how sweet the highs are with a soft tweeter vs the titanium tweeters in the Interludes. With 2 8" woofers vs 1 8" in the IL40s, well that outcome was easy to predict.

The 8.3s have a more imposing presence throughout the audio range - not just louder - better dynamics.

And at higher volume it simply was no contest at all. The 8.3s just get louder with the same clarity as at lower volumes, but the Interludes get a bit shrill at those same volumes.

The 8.3s are as close as I've had to live music without actually being there. But remember, even "live" is broadcast through preamps - amps - and speakers - unless its an unplugged session. For the asking price of around $1500 they are very good. I've said many times - if you buy a pair tell your audiophile friends you paid $3900 for them, they'll never question it.

I ended up going with Ascend's moving sale 5.0 setup for my speakers. I think I will get 2 SVS PB-12+s to finish out my system. I kept trying to second guess myself into spending a lot more, but I just don't think I would notice a significant enough difference. I'm coming from an old Aiwa HTIB, so it's already going to be like night and day.

All that said, I need suggestions on where to place my surrounds (the 170se's). Should I place them directly on either side of the couch, a couple of feet above the listening position? Or since there is so much room behind the couch would it be better to place them in the corners in the rear of the room?

They should be on the sides. This should help you:

Ascend is a nice choice indeed and would be a huge upgrade for sure.
Congrats!
