Looking for help/suggestions in-wall dvd storage shelves

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions. We have a pantry closet whom's side is facing the living room. I thought it would be a perfect place to make some build in shelving for blu-rays and dvd/cd storage. Maybe 4 or 5 shelves.

I was thinking of taking out all the pantry shelves. Cut the side of the pantry and frame in the shelving. Close the back and cut all the current pantry shelving to size and re-attach them to the back of the future in wall storage

Probably only 6 inches deep max. The only problem I foresee is the power outlet. How do you think this is wired? Straight up or first to the right into the main wall? I have a stud finder and I did notice a stud to the left of the outlet.

This is where I want the shelving

This is the right corner of the pantry. Pretty much the depth of the "to be" shelving

This is the right inside of the pantry where the backing would be of the shelving

If the only problem you foresee in cutting into your pantry is the power outlet you are must be single or clueless, or both! Maybe while you're making home improvements you can convert the bathtub to a beer cooler, too!

Just giving you grief, my friend! Just giving you grief.

Hahaha, well neither. Its the wife that doesn't want me to start cutting into the wall before I asked for some suggestions on the forum.
Not totally clueless.

Build a deck in the back yard. Mounted the TV including relocating a power outlet for the tv. Done ceiling fans and bathroom fans' lights.

Not a big electricity fan though. Just not sure where to relocate the outlet or just cap it.

St. Paul huh....I'll be there next week. (my job)

Have you checked there's no plumbing runs or HVAC in that space? My guess is that wall space is deep for a reason.

Take the shelves out and with a drywall saw, cut a really small hole from the inside, and look around. If you're pretty good with making drywall repairs, should be easy to patch up from the inside, and the white paint will be easy to match.

Like Tedd said, that area seems deep, so there must be something else there but its hard to tell in the picture. Is the thickness of that wall just a 2x4 with sheetrock on both sides?

They may have just added some additional scrap framing in there to make the outlet look more centered, and not right up against the corner.

I don't do electrical, but I have had alot recently done in my house and being an insurance adjuster I see gutted houses all the time. My guess is that it runs to the right, which appears to be the bedroom. That would be the easiest for them. Electrician will run horizontal through studs more so than to run each one down through the top. At least that is what I see.

If you get all that figured out, should be simple. I did something really close in my HT room, and it was pretty easy.

Why don't you cut a small hole on the inside of the pantry wall and take a look inside that wall? If you don't like what you see, it is just a small patch that will nobody but you would know is there.

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah I checked and there is some kine of studd to the left of the outlet. Its just 2x3 all around and a pantry in the middle.

After some thought I think I will proceed as follows

1: Turn of the circuitbreaker and remove the current outlet. Maybe that will let me take a peek around and tell me where the wiring is going.

2: Make a hole inside the pantry like you guys suggested if I cannot determine the wiring from option 1. Thanks again!
