^^Did the same with the same result - no lock-ups while listening to Pandora for a couple of hours. With 2.02, the best I got was 5 or 6 tunes before it crashed.

I'll stick with 2.02 since I don't use Pandora. That way we have some people on each version in case there are differences.

You're a thinker, Brokk...good idea Keep us updated on how you are liking the BlockBuster PPVs.

I'm gonna update to 1.04 cuz I need me some Pandora. Will my player pick up the update automatically the next time I turn it on or do I have to manually update with a flash drive?

I just tried this out and it detected the 1.04 firmware automatically. I had 2.02 installed, btw.

Are you suggesting that 1.04 does not have Blockbuster. When I bought mine it already had v1.04 and at that time Blockbuster was working (I watched free trailors etc - very good quality). Anyway, I did upgrade to 2.02 and blockbuster stopped working and Pandora started freezing. So I am not sure what made the difference.

I will go home and try once more

Come to think of it...you're right. I remember someone on this forum having 1.04 coming with their player and blockbuster and youtube was on it. I stand corrected.

As soon as I got home, I turned on my player and it didn't ask me to do an update. I tried to go into Setup and manually selecting update, and it says I already have the latest firmware...2.02. Is everyone else, that had 2.02, getting an automatic update to 1.04 when they turn on their player?

I'm not. I had to download the USB version. Note: plug the USB drive with the un-zipped file into the BACK/REAR port.

Blockbuster option still available with 1.04. Check my earlier post about talking to a Blockbuster rep. Everything says "Coming Soon" now. Also, check out THIS PAGE. It use to be www.blockbuster.com/activatesamsungbd and now it is not.

Note about above: you have to be signed in previously into your active account or trial membership first to see a page stating: "COMING SOON The BLOCKBUSTER(R) movie store is not yet available for your device. Please check back soon."

Why use the rear port?? I've used the front USB port for all my upgrades (1.02 -> 1.03, 1.03 -> 2.02, 2.02 -> 1.04) with no installation problems.

I updated to v1.04 last night, and played with Netflix, YouTube, and Pandora. The only problem I noticed so far was that only the first 20 YouTube favorites are accessible. Has anyone experienced this problem, or am I missing something obvious in the interface? Maybe my problem is that I have too many favorites!

Lucky you! The firmware was never recognized by the player on my front port. Nothing happened until I unplug by bd-live usb flash drive from the back and used that port. YMMV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once I did that, I had absolutely no installation problems thereafter.

P. S. I've done all of my firmware updates via the network connection, letting the player detect them. Couldn't do that with this downgrade.
I have had this for a week now, from the costco sale (my box says 1590 (without the C) and came with HDMI. When I registered with Samsung, the serial number was recognized as 1590.

Hooking up wasn't an issue. I already had the HDMI hooked up (to my Samsung 1080p A750) and Pioneer VSX-21 via optical. It immediately said there was a firmware available (via my LAN, 7Mbps cable). I updated it (even before that it showed BB, NF, Pan and YT). I didnt see the version that it updated to.

Blu ray:

24fps: on; switches to my native 60hz when content isnt supported).

Tried Transporter first, the audio was 2 ch (Dolby PLII). After playing around, set it to bitstream (audiophile) and DTS came out great.

Since then I have tried Transporter 2, Swordfish, Role Models. No issues.

I tried Ninth Gate, and I just had the menu music playing and menu didnt show up (as someone reported with Black Hawk Down).

DVD:

Upconversion is good- tried just one: Gone in 60 seconds. Not too much of a techie, but I can live with what I get with it (did not pixelate).

Netflix:
Already had netflix account. Set up was a breeze. Have watched a few movies since then. The quality was better than Silverlight system (WMP/WMC) streamed from computer. I get 80% of bars lit up for most movies. Saw a couple of titles on HD- Flawless, Let the right one in, Brotherhood, The Office. The video was fantastic. Wish they stream multichannel audio :-)

I didnt face any lipsync issue or anything else. No complaints there.

Pandora:
Created an account, and I had no problems (no freezes), played 30 mins at a stretch.

Blockbuster:
Never got to see the titles. It opened ok, but all I saw was the template "coming soon". If it is going to be PPV, no thanks. I doubt if it will be HD quality with multichannel sound, so if I am dying to watch a movie then and netflix hasnt sent me, I have the dollar menu-Redbox. I dont mind walking up to the gas station at my street corner :-D

Youtube:

Streams good. Tried a couple of "HD" videos. Not bad I would say. Not sure if it streams HD when HD and SD are available (online, you have to click on the HD link to get it started)-any idea?

As someone pointed out, search is a pain. Couldnt they have done a better keyboard layout? Gawd some texting addict should have designed it.

You dont have to login (as someone mentioned) to view videos. Logging in would sync your favorites from online to the player. I really wish they added playlists to the menu.

Back to Blu ray:

I had a firmware update suggestion yesterday, and I went for it (now I am on 1.04). After reading all the posts on firmware, I wanted to retest Ninth Gate, it plays fine without any problem. Happy ending there!

Bottomline:
Bang for the buck. I was seriously considering PS3 Slim. With me not being into gaming, I was wondering if I should get PS3 for the additional $130. This player with Netflix, lured me, so far so good. I would possibly stick with it.

Going to firmware 2.02 messed up many Blu-ray title menus (and those are just the ones I know about, could have been much more). However, version 2.02 made it possible for a couple of Blu-ray titles to even load up which didn't under version 1.03. Thankfully, version 1.04 fixed the menu issues AND still allowed the disc I mentioned to load/start playing. Overall, 1.04 is a step forward more so than 2.02.

See posts #177 and #218 about Blockbuster. I believe you are correct about the PPV though. I'm not sure about HD, they might (for a price). They are more like Amazon On-Demand maybe? We will all see "coming soon."

We installed our firmware update using the front port too. No problems here either.

Installing from the network is 100% better and 200% easier. At the moment, I'm way more concerned about Blu-ray playback issues over how the firmwares I've already loaded actually got loaded.

A couple of questions here... I've got my 1590 running HDMI to a Pioneer Elite VSX94-TXH and was listing to Pandora this afternoon. I decided to turn off the TV to save power and when I cut off the TV, the receiver no longer put out any audio. I'm thinking that this has something to do with the receiver wanting to maintain an HDMI connection from source to destination. Do I need to setup another audio connection from the 1590, say digital or the stereo outs to the receiver to stream Pandora without the TV on? Can the 1590 output two different connections like that (HDMI for A/V and another for just the audio)? I'd rather not get into a rewiring of my entertainment center if not...

Also - when I first got the 1590, it automatically updated to the 2.02 FW. I figured since 1.04 was now the latest and greatest, the 1590 would find that, but it hasn't yet and when I go into the menu and try to have the system look for it, it says that I've got the latest FW. Pandora runs fine for me on 2.02 so there is not a burning reason for me to change I guess Thoughts?

I've had the same issues with turning off the TV, causes the 1590 to shut off as well. I'm wondering if I change video selections away from the HDMI, if that wills sever the auto-shutoff signal or not. I haven't tried it yet.

I have also had issues where I turn on the TV (it's already on HDMI), so it triggers the 1590 to turn on. However, I don't want to watch the 1590 and I change my video to something else. When the 1590 finishes starting up, it automatically changes my TV back to HDMI. So it's a bit of a control freak and kind of annoying me. Then I have to shut off the 1590 (god forbid it's starting up a BD, because it won't let me power down until its made its way through the damn menus and sometimes endless previews and legal comments). Then once the 1590 is shut off, I can switch away from the HDMI again.

Brokk...

Take a look at your HDMI-CEC settings (AnyNet+ on the Samsung, KuroLink on the Pioneer). I disabled the "auto on" settings on my Samsung LCD TV and was then able to listen to Pandora with the TV off.

P.S. Great forum. I was also bitten by the 2.02 upgrade/Pandora freeze and successfully down-revved the firmware to 1.04.

My first and only attempt at updating over the network resulted in a bricked player. USB is working fine with me so I'm sticking with it from now on...

I have the same problem with Youtube. You arent alone. Wish they fix it, and add "playlist" to the interface.

I have a Samsung TV also. I turned off the Anynet feature. That way I can watch cable while a BD is loading and getting to the menu screen, or pause a BD (HDMI 2) and check a score on cable (HDMI 1) when my wife leaves the room for a few minutes.
I don't mind not having the TV turn on and automatically find HDMI 2 when I turn the 1590 on. I need the exercise of punching my remote!

I may be wrong on this, but I believe you need to unplug the BD live usb drive before updating. Once it is unplugged, it doesn't matter which port you plug the firware usb drive (front/back). You just can't have both drives in at the same time.

That's what I've been thinking myself like having no disc in the tray during a on-line firmware update check (of course the player tells you to have a no disc state).

Good to know, thank you for that one. I haven't removed the flash drive with successful network downloads but don't want to chance it in the future. I've never read the USB or CD instructions fully:

F/W Update Method by USB flash drive
How to prepare F/W Update file via USB flash drive
1. Download the newest firmware file onto your computer from www.samsung.com.
2. If the firmware file is compressed (*.zip), the file should be uncompressed to RUF
file (*.ruf).
3. Connect a USB flash drive to your computer.
4. If there are previous versions of RUF file on USB flash drive, delete them.
5. Copy the new RUF file to USB flash drive.
Warning
The following events may interrupt the upgrade process and MAY RESULT IN
PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE UNIT.
1. Unplugging the power cord
2. Power Outage
How to upgrade the BD Player
1. Remove any Disc, the display should read "No Disc."
2. Insert USB flash drive into the USB Host jack.
3. Please wait while verifying.
4. After sometime, you will see "Yes/No" menu.
5. Press the 'Enter' button to choose 'Yes' if the version is a later version than
the current one.
6. Wait about 2~3 minutes. When finished, the power will turn off automatically.
7. Remove the USB flash drive.
8. If this is the first time this player is upgrade by CD or USB flash drive, proceed to
Step 9. Otherwise, upgrade is COMPLETE.
THE STEP BELOW IS NECESSARY ONLY FOR THE FIRST FIRMWARE
UPGRADE.
9. Turn on the Power.
10. Select Menu LANGUAGE.
11. Repeat from Step 1 to Step 7.
The Current Version and New Version Please in Step 5 may be identical. Please
select Yes to complete Firmware upgrade.

Here is a new problem I've never had. I got Cutthroat Island by rental in the mail and popped it in. It goes through a moving menu of pictures from the movie.... however it never goes to a screen that has "play, scenes, features, etc." It goes to the end of the menu and starts over.

Nothing I do on the remote makes the movie play. Actually, I can't do anything. Suggestions?

Check some of my earlier bad/good Blu-ray disc posts. Firmware 2.02 caused the problem on many titles and it was corrected with 1.04 (on the titles I tested).

I have Cutthroat Island and played it for the family awhile back but on another player. I'll check it out again on the 1590 ASAP.

Thanks. I currently have the 2.02 firmware, but I may go back.
Thanks for checking.
