Thanks for checking.

Here's an updated list of disc I've tried so far. I just tried Cutthroat Island and it's menu loaded fine and it played well using 1.04. In addition to your experience with it using 2.02, I've put it on the list as well.

Just read in the BD-P1600 thread that firmware version 2.03 is out today (17th).

Link

I'll try it now. Network update isn't showing it at the moment so I'll go USB and follow ALL of the instructions this time.

Webpage states:

Ver 2.03 : SEP. 17. 2009
1. Improves e-Contents (Youtube/Blockbuster/Netflix/Pandora) playback capability.
2. Improves a specific BD title''s playback capability.

P.S. Also just played 12 Rounds using 1.04 and it played fine (another one coming off the "bad" list).
It seems like Samsung is giving us the model 1600 firmware again like they did last time when they accidentally posted 2.02 which didn't work very well (skipped a bunch of version numbers).

I don't think I'll upgrade unless I hear some good reports from those of you willing to try it. Of course I guess I can always go back if I want to...
I might try this new firmware, as my Pandora is broken (I'm on 2.02). Per the Samsung website, they list the firmware versions in "date" order, so 2.03 would seem to have the fixes from 1.04 (ok, maybe I'm wishing):

Ver 2.03 : SEP. 17. 2009
1. Improves e-Contents (Youtube/Blockbuster/Netflix/Pandora) playback capability.
2. Improves a specific BD title''s playback capability.

Ver 1.04 : SEP. 10. 2009
1. Improves playback problem of PANDORA

Ver 2.02 : SEP. 3. 2009
1. Youtube/Blockbuster e-Contents service.
2. MKV/MP4 file playback.

Ver 1.03 : JUNE. 23. 2009
1. Improves playback compatibility of some movie titles

Darn it! I just got my new Harmony One remote all programmed to autostart Netflix or Pandora and now I have this stupid upgrade message that I can't turn off!

Come on Samsung we are grownups and most of us don't want to beta test your software. They should add the capability to turn off the automatic firmware check!

Btw, I have been streaming Pandora and Netflix without trouble using 1.4 for a few weeks. Of course I have only had the box for three :-)

Based on the few titles I have re-tested (some several times because of all the firmware updates) I believe you are correct: 2.03 is like an 'unbroken' improved version of 1.04 that 2.02 was suppose to be. One example is that menus broken with 2.02 are fine with 2.03. Also, so far, online content has performed great. Blockbuster (closing more stores) still isn't operational.

However, I'm still having problems with T2: Skynet Edition and Beuwolf. I'm trying to find the time to re-test AVP Requiem and the Aliens DVD yet again.

I'm trying to keep a detailed list now. Unfortunately, I didn't start track firmware versions early on though.

I continue to list Blu-ray titles that play fine becasue it's my believe that the vast majority of titles out there will play fine in the BD-P1590 (as the list shows). I don't mean to harp on the T2 disc, it's just one I can test quickly.

Also, I want to say the the "problem" discs I mention play just fine the vast majority of their run-time.

Furthermore, I'm trying to add time stamps and more information as I can to the list.

Here is the latest updated list (note: as mentioned above, titles without a firmware listing were played before I started tracking them):

Problem Blu-rays:

Alien Quadtrilogy [0-24543-09847-8] (Aliens DVD) Fox | DD | Multi-Branching
- Pixelation <1.01, 1.03, 1.04, 2.02>
- Pixelation remains, really gets "macro-blocking looking" many times; random, not immediately repeatable <1.04>
- Hard pause at approximately 1:22:25; player struggled to get a/v synched back up <1.04>

- Audio/Video pauses/stops/glitches <1.01, 1.03>
- ? <1.04, 2.02>

Beowulf: Director's Cut [0-97361-38624-9] Paramount | D TrueHD
- ? <1.01, 1.03>
- Audio/Video pauses/stops/glitches <2.02>
- Horizontal lines along right side of picture <2.02>
- NO Horizontal lines <1.04, 203>
- Stuttering during portion of Grendel's 2nd attack (repeatable) <1.04, 2.03>

T2: Judgement Day: Skynet Ed. [0-12236-10364-6] Lionsgate | DTS-HD MA | Multi-Branching
- Audio/Video pauses/stops/glitches <1.01, 1.03, 2.02>
- Audio/Video pauses/stops/glitches remain (Extended & Extended Special) 40:41++, 44:05++ <1.04, 2.03>
- At 44:05, sometimes plays fine and sometimes Arnold freezes on the screen and the audio keeps playing++ <2.03>
- At 1:21:05 Audio/Video Pause during Extended Special playback++ <2.03>
- At 1:50:06 Audio/Video Lockup during Extended Special playback; Fast-Forwarded, and Play Button to resume++ <2.03>
++ Not always repeating (irritating)
Note: the vast majority of this title plays fine, just don't know if/when a "hang up" will occur.

Any updates on folks that have tried the 2.03 update?
So far, FW 2.03 is working OK on my BD-P1590, but that assessment is subject to change when I pop in the next Blu-Ray disk. The Pandora problem seems to have been resolved.

I have been monitoring the P1590 and P1600 threads, and I am somewhat surprised that the owners of these players generally do not seem to realize that Blu-Ray is an evolving standard. I guess that neither the manufacturers nor the resellers want to publicize this. The frequent firmware updates (some with less than desirable results) are NOT unique to Samsung. As long as the studios place their copyright protection above consumer satisfaction, you can expect the BR disk problems to continue.

Anyone that wants near universal playability should probably stick to standard definition DVD. As an early HD-DVD adopter, I can tell you that even HD-DVD did not seem to be plagued with as many playability problems as Blu-Ray is currently experiencing. Still, I have been through this before, and I am willing to deal with it.

Anyone that is not willing to experience occasional compatibility problems should probably wait another year before purchasing a player. But I expect Blu-Ray to be superseded by on-line streaming in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the update Shed. How long were you playing Pandora for?

Pandora streamed for a couple of hours with no problem. It stopped during the second song prior to the 2.03 update.

Took the plunge from 1.4 to 2.3. Pandora working fine. It worked in 1.4 as well. I will post again when Netflix is tested. So far so good....
Well, I'm on my second 1590 now. I had to exchange the first one at Costco last week as the hardwired network port apparently failed as it could no longer access the internet. The new one was upgraded to 2.03 last night and seems to be working fine now. I streamed Pandora for close to 4 hours earlier today with absolutely no interruptions. Will try some Blu's tonight. I was hoping this second player would not make the grinding noise on power up, but it sounds the same as the first one. I guess I can live with it for the price.

Here is a resource that may be helpful for anyone having problems with the 2.03 firmware. C-Net hosts a forum on which a Samsung Tech is providing support. You can find it here:

Watched a HD movie. All good. 2.3 is working for me.

I upgraded to 2.03 yesterday.....the player saw it the instant I powered on. So far no problems. I haven't tried Pandora, but sounds like it's working now. I did watch a standard def movie last night (no problems) and a Netflix streaming movie (no problems), so I'm happy.

I hadn't touch by bd-p1590 for a few weeks.

When I fired her up today, I get series of blinking static looking images.

The device is also not responding properly. If I don't put a disc into the machine, it doesn't say "No Disc." Basically, the machine is acting like it's fried.

I just got it from Costco a few weeks ago and it worked great until today. I did nothing to it. No firmware updates. It just stopped working. I can't even reset it to the factory settings. It's just stuck.

I'm really bummed. Any thoughts on how to address this?

2.03 adopters, have you seen any improvements in YouTube? I was specifically wondering if the bug with user favorites(only first 20 favorites are shown) has been fixed.

Thanks!

Mine's a refurbished unit from Overstock.com. Updated via ethernet over the weekend with no issues.

1.04 --> 2.03 - Pandora is still working. I had 2.02 and downgraded to 1.04 because of Pandora freezing after 2 songs.

Recently I put in a Blu-Ray disc of Weeds Season 4. The menu background displays and loops fine but there are no menu items. I have tried other Blu-Ray disc and the menus work fine. I assume there is something different about the way this menu is layered. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

I had this same problem with Cutthroat Island. I had no idea what to do about it. I heard on this board it works fine with 1.04 firmware. It was a mail rental from Blockbuster, so thankfully I didn't buy it... but still annoying. (UPDATE, I was told Weeds is a Lionsgate disc, like Cutthroat)

Wish I knew what to tell you...

Just a quick note: I was just at Sam's and noticed the price on the 1590C was back up to $219 (I paid $179 a few weeks ago). Don't know why.

Edit (9/30/09): Was at Sam's this morning....price was $178.

So did the latest update allow for playing of MKV files? I thought I read it did, but I tried to play one via USB and it did not work. Is this just other models?
We bought the 1590 at Sam's a couple days ago, but have not yet opened the box. I wanted to do a little more research before hooking mine up, but after reading all 9 pages of this thread, it's being promptly returned. I'm not about to deal with these issues...

This just happened to me about two hours ago. I finished watching Weeds season three, so I set the disk back into its case, snapped it shut, and proceeded to fit it back into my small but growing Blu-Ray collection. Seeing I still had time to continue watching, I shuffled season three back in, next to Weeds season two, while I anxiously clasped season four's case. With a grin on my face, I walked down the hall towards my basic, yet modern amateur home theater, and completed all the steps needed to best replicate the relationship I shared with the first three seasons of Shotime's Weeds. Soon after the the first two steps were history, I closed the disk tray and naturally, as we all do, I awaited for the fourth. This is where chicoasher, other Weeds fans, and I came to feel cheated, although nobody came; the fun ends before the finish; we're blue-balled...

I have the most recent BD-P1590 firmware update installed and the ethernet cable is always attached, providing the world to the fingertips of my Samsung Blu-Ray player so that it may obtain whatever it shall need. However, after inserting disk one (and disk two), I'm left there sitting with remote in hand, button mashing repeatedly out of confusion, and staring at a looping background of a menu which presents to its viewers no options, other than to choosing between feeling cornered by a rupturing atmosphere of discontentment, or to simply skip that stage, and just jump right into an emotional world of rage. Assuredly, any one of us who unfortunately finds incompatibility, while in search of a cinematic treasure, ultimately becomes a victim of the Samsung BD-P1590, and when given only these two horrid options, we will inevitably enter the world of rage at some point.

It's a fact, once the black, long and thick, hard and pulsating, and vein-wrapped member of the Samsung Blu-Ray god enters your place of comfort, bringing gifts and promises of satisfaction. Binarically injecting its helpless prey with its so-called "Firmware Updates." After the Blu-Ray player power-cycles and enough time is given for the recently conceived update to travel through the electronic tubes from deep within the belly of the beast, and conclude its installation by clinging to fleshy wall deep within, where both Samsung customer and technical support teams secretly place their bets, each all-in, and all of us with our fingers crossed.

Hopefully Samsung will knock up a healthy update, for once since the product's launch, that will succeed, and Weeds season four, as well as others, will play on our screens in perfect form. In reviewing my levels of costumer satisfaction thus far, specifically concerning my experiences with the resulting deformities found in previous failware updates, I appreciate Samsung Blu-Ray god and his ethical opinions, which favor the Pro-Choice movement, and I also find comfort in knowing I have the choice to abort any new digital-fetus that comes my way, or at least hold off on its installation until people more brave than I install it and confirm that it's an improvement or not.

I feel cheap and used...

Here's a question for everyone.... Are the problems experienced by P1590/P1600 owners unique to these players? Do owners of other BR players have significantly less problems?

These issues are unique to the 1590/1600s as far as I know right now. The 1590 I returned was for my parents, as I personally have a PS3, and it's been trouble free so far. I'm hoping some of the members on here can help point me in the right direction for an "issue free" player for my folks.

Also, did you read Force_Fed's post above? LMAO!

Shed said something important that I think bears repeating given the recent questions

I was also noting as I popped in "Woverine" on blu-ray last night, that it spent two sepperate screens stating this point. That due to the latest technologies used for this disk, I made need a firmware update and to check with the manufacturer. It stuck in my head that this warning during load up is stuck on that disc for the rest of time. 10 years from now it will still be warning me I might need a firmware update to watch this disc. Thus reaffirming "No, this issue is not unique to Samsung".

It played flawlessly BTW. My only complaint was that there was not much for "extras".

Brokk...
