Screens and kids damage

I've got my PJ up and speakers and AVR, now I am contemplating adding a screen. I am leaning to a fixed size, but I am a little concerned regarding possible kid damage, as kids are kids. They can be taught not to color on a wall / screen. But, it still sometimes happens.

I have an 9, 8, 5 and a .5 year old. What have been people's results with kids and screen damage with writting etc. Is is repairable, or once it happens, is the screen dead?

Depends on what they write with. If it's a sharpie, it's dead.

My HT remains locked and my kids are only in there when I'm in there. Toys and other things are not allowed in there either, so it's not an issue.

Maybe I should just hook up our old tv so that they can play the Wii, and watch a movie without adding unecessary hours on the PJ.

The problem is that the area, isn't in an area that can be 100% secure from them. So, I'm in a quandry as to what to do.

They shouldn't be using the PJ, but I haven't hooked up their TV yet.

Your suggestion sounds good though, only with Adult supervision./

If you cannot control access to the room in which your screen is installed, I would say you should stick with an electric roll down type until your youngest is old enough to know better than to mess with it--and put the screen power on a key switch.

I think they know better, but I'm just controlling the accidents. They seem to happen. I think I will either get a roll down one or just have the wall until they are old enough.

Would I get a better picture if I painted the walls white with a slight blue tint?

Here is a pic of the wall.

I'm planning of rocking over the cover plates, I put in (antenna / power / cat5e) boxes for a flat screen TV, but I like the PJ so much better that i'm not sure if I will put it in. I'll just measure where they are to take them out later if needed.

No. The best color for your walls is as dark as the wife will allow. Light colored walls will reflect light back onto the screen and wash out the image.

If you really meant what color should you paint the screen, there is a ton of info in the DIY Screen Section at the top of this forum about paints and other materials.

So, not just the wall the PJ throws it onto, but the cieling and the surrounding walls as well need to be painted the darker color?

Ideally you would have your walls and ceiling painted flat black, but as this typically is not achievable going as dark as possible will work just fine. If you intend on just projecting onto the wall, the DIY section has some great info on what paints to use to do this. If you do plan on getting a screen, you would want your front wall as dark as possible as well. I am projecting into my living room for a screen with white walls/ceiling and my room lights up when I am watching a movie. It is due to the cross reflection of the image bouncing off the screen and around my room, the darker and flatter the walls, the less this will happen.

OK, since my walls were painted a semi gloss, and trim a gloss, it could reflect more. the cieling was painted flat.
