Two days ago I spent a couple hours at a local appliance store (not a chain) and I had a chance to compare the Sharp 700UN LED, Samsung 6000 series LED, the Samsung LN32B650, and a few others. I have also looked a great deal at the Sony XBR9 at other locations.
Here's how I would rank them from best to worst according to the qualities I like:
1. Sharp 700UN
2. Samsung 6000
3. Samsung LN32B650
4. Sony XBR9
The Sharp 700UN surprised the heck out of me. I hadn't paid much attention to Sharps before, but this 700UN is a winner. Contrast, clarity and color was outstanding on the 700UN. Personally, this is probably the tv I am going to get. Nice.
The Samsung 6000 was very close, but the Sharp had better uniformity, was slightly sharper, had a better viewing angle, and seemed to have a less reflective screen. Samsung colors might have been just a bit better, but not enough for me to care about. Some people might care though, so there is that positive for the Samsung, if it turns out to be true. Post calibration I have no idea, but it did seem to have slightly more accurate colors in the store.
To my eyes, neither the 32B650 nor the XBR9 have the kind of clarity, contrast and depth that the LEDs have. They are definitely nice, and a big step up from the low end 32 inch LCDs, but they don't look as good as the LED-lit ones in my opinion
