no show, no studio, in town, no clubbin, time to try some settings on the 58...*cracks a brew*cracks knuckles*...

I should have brought this up before, but you are in a perfect situation now to enter the SM and activate the Cal-Day, Cal-Night options to your picture modes list. Since you haven't been using any tweaked settings yet, anything you were viewing before like Standard will be restored when you leave the SM ... so nothing to write down beforehand.

If you're at all interested in entering the SM, shoot me a PM and I will guide you through whatever you might need.

Yeah you shouldve brought that up lol. I don't know what the benefits are of those modes but if its worth it ill do it. Plus I still have 2 more to do. Who knows when thatll happen.

Anyway I put in the #10 line from that list and I have to say it looks like it does in the cinema. I did it with transformers playing from the PS3 and its incredile to watch the pq change. Feel like I have a whole new tv. I see what people mean by too dark and what you meant by I may not like it but in viewing it as movie mode and not COMPARING it to standard its a very accurate and .....(I can't quite get the word I need there yet engulfing consuming enveloping all come to mind but don't quite say what I mean) picture. Going to check avatar now and book of eli tomorrow night.

That's great news. Glad you like the look. I am still using the column 10 settings and when combined with Warm 2 they look the most Cinematic, as you said. I use slightly different WB settings though with Cal Day and Night though.

but wouldn't you only benefit from cal-day/night if you have a device to help you do the calibration?

sorry I haven't been following the whole discussion...
Is the day/night cal for if you want a brighter pic during the day and a dimmer/more accurate pic for night viewing? In stead of adjusting contrast, brightness, etc. you just select day or night?
velvet396,

Yes, for full effect a proper calibration is necessary. But each of these modes when activated have their own distinctive look from the start. He says he will consider calibration in the future but for now he's only experimenting and hasn't had any time to really get familiar with the set. Plugging in different settings will at least expose him to more than using Standard.

Yep, that's the basic idea. But it all really depends on individual viewing environments and preferences.

Man im impressed with my 650 all over again.... its a good feeling. Now im searching the thread for game mode settings. I guess I'll put these settings in on the rec room sets but i wont have blu ray on those until the install is done. Are there settings for just watching sports and regular TV? I cant imagine watching a football game in movie mode and thats what i use the rec room for, well that and play 360.

Haven't visited this thread for awhile, what calibration settings are peeps using?
Great. Now I'm having tv issues. Twice now my remote only kind of worked and the red light on the tv was flashing constantly. I may be using that extended warranty after all.
try new batteries, seriously, mine did the same thing.

I did. After I first noticed this problem I went out and got brand new batteries from the store, put them in, and it was fine until now. It's possible that there is some kind of interference happening, but I don't know what it would be coming from.

BTW, here are my settings, which I was given courtesy of rfbrown94 (thanks again!):

Movie Mode

Cell Light 10
Contrast 92
Brightness 53
Sharpness 2
Color 50
Tint 50/50

Put gamma at -1 and put film mode to "auto 1." Auto 1 is the only mode that deinterlaces properly. Turn everything else "off"

Use Warm2 white balance adjusted as follows:

R-Offset: 24
G-Offset: 25
B-Offset: 24
R-Gain: 36
G-Gain: 25
B-Gain: 39

Custom Color Space (1st # is red, 2nd is green, 3rd is blue):

Red: 38,7,7
Green: 33,50,16
Blue: 5, 0, 39
Yellow: 47, 50, 19
Cyan: 36, 48, 48
Magenta: 40, 0, 42

Until I get mine calibrated I'll be sticking with these for sure.

Well, it happened again today and I got a video of it this time. The camera I used to record the video has a broken lens, which is why part of the video is obscured and why it is fuzzy. The humming sound in the video is my XBOX 360, not the tv. What I didn't show in the video is that when the tv does this, the remote won't turn it off. It has to be turned off manually.

It could be interference I suppose, but it had this problem for about an hour today and then it went away with no explanation and then came back for a couple seconds a few minutes later. I don't know what could interfere with it, unless it is something the neighbor is doing.

Here's the video.

Because the out of box color is so good, it is not difficult really to use any of these listings and still be quite pleased. I now have plugged in column 11 color settings with my preferred adjustments to WB which is usually to reduce Green offset a few clicks, among other things. I cannot tolerate green tint in low blacks, hairlines, etc. My eyes seem to adjust to minor browning with Red or even very slight bluing in those areas more easily although black is always the goal.

I'm keeping an eye on this, and I've made a new interesting discovery.

Are you all familiar with those brightness sliders in xBox 360 games that ask you to lower the slider until you can just barely see the dark grey image over the black background? Well, when my blacks get poorer, that icon becomes far more apparent (I can put the slider all the way down and still see it); of course, at this time the tv looks like hell because blacks are grey and contrast stinks. But here's where it gets interesting: running the scolling bars for 10-20 minutes seems to actually restore blacks to some degree. After doing that, the grey icon is once again buried in black, and I can increase the brightness of the game. This seems to lend more credence to my theory that the elevated black levels on Samsung plasmas is a form of fullscreen image retention, yes?

It wouldn't surprise me, but I can't say I've had that problem myself. I just worry about the HUD. Fortunately, Crackdown 2 has a transparency slider and you can remove the HUD entirely in Red Dead Redemption.

Hey all I've had my pn50b650 for about 8 months and love it. I mostly play ps3 games and watch BD on my ps3 slim with no complaints. Recently however I've noticed when watching Blu Ray there seems to be some type of ghosting happening in dark scenes. Fast movements seem to cause a sort of trail that lasts for 4-5 frames and has become quite upsetting. It happens with bd wise on/off but seems to be alleviated when game mode is turned on. I've never noticed this when playing any games or when streaming netflix hd, it seems that it is only with blu ray. I havent changed any settings on either my tv or ps3 and never had this problem until a few weeks ago so I am rather puzzled as to why it is only happening now. If anyone has any tips or info I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Anyone successfully using the Pandora widget wirelessly on this tv? I tried to use it but it's just way too slow. Gaps of greater than a minute between songs. Just curious.
I just had a black line appear going horizontally across the screen about two inches up from the bottom, and about 1-2mm in width. Anyone know what the cause of this is? I've only had it for 6 months roughly, and I've babied it to death as to avoid any IR, burn in, etc. Almost always stretched the screen to avoid black bars, ran the scrolling almost religiously after games, black bar movie watching, etc.

I've checked channels, games, stretched and checked, and nother I've watched has a border or similar at the exact spot of the line. My first guess would be it dying from lack of use (edge of black bars, not getting use), but as I said, I checked everything and nothing matches. It's on all inputs, stretched screens, and during scrolling.

I can't find anything like that issue in the service manual. If it is visible with all inputs it is a panel issue. Call Samsung Service.

I've got my laptop connected to my PN50B650 and it's working great, but I'm having trouble with the audio output. I'm trying to passthrough DD and DTS to my receiver which is connected through the optical out on the TV, but it's not working. In the properties dialog on my laptop it says that the maximum number of channels is 2 and the list of supported compressed formats is empty. Is this expected? Can this not be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The optical out on the TV does not support more than 2 channels. Kinda sucks, I know.
If it's like my b450 and c550, the optical out passes 5.1 from OTA sources. But as Aeonus says, not from anything else.

Really? Well so much for that idea. One more reason to upgrade my receiver I guess.

My pn50b650 had two problems that were both fixed when Samsung replaced the main board under warranty. The first problem was that the tv would start quickly flashing alternating static snow and picture when I would try to use my Samsung bd-p1590 blu-ray player's online content (Blockbuster, netflix, etc.) The online content appears to be 720 and the HDMI processor did not seem to be able to handle the resolution change from 1080. When I manually set the bd-p1590's output to 720 then the problem went away, but I would have to manually switch it back to watch anything in 1080.

The second problem, which occured later, was that all of the HDMI ports stopped working completely except for number 2 which happened to be the only dual HDMI/DVI port on the tv. When the repairman swapped the main board he pointed out that the HDMI processor felt hot and the white painted inscription on it had faded significantly. He said he often saw that paint fade on chips that had gotten too hot. I asked him if they had made any changes or improvements to the board and he said that he was not aware of any. I searched the web to see if others have had HDMI problems and there are many people saying that it is not a good idea to try to hot swap HDMI connections on any device (unplugging and plugging in HDMI devices when either the device or tv is powered up.) I'm lucky it happened while under warranty and I hope that not hot swapping will help keep it from happening again. My tv is on a low stand, good for watching, but not good for keeping those ports away from anyone who may have built up a charge by walking across the carpet. The ports on the side are in a location where it is natural to put your hand when adjusting the tv on it's pivoting base.

Does anyone know what the industry standard is for protecting ports from ESD (electrostatic discharge)? I see that there are some solutions out there that would have to be built-in, like the TI TPD8S009 8-Channel Display/HDMI Port ESD Protection DSM package.

Anybody using Oppo BDP-83 player with this TV? Film mode remains off & greyed out when I use Oppo, but film mode is active when I switch to my DirectTV DVR. Oppo is connected via AVR, but DVR is directly connected to TV.
