09 Samsung B series "buzz" thread [NO PRICE TALK] - Page 111

...the directional buzz is present and accounted for. Purchased from Amazon, with a build date of Sept 2009.

It's inaudible/tolerable from the side viewing angles, but from dead center, at a distance of 11 ft, and volume <40, it is bothersome. One note though: the buzz does not become more distinct when the panel displays light/white images. It is the worst with dark/black scenes (when the TV powers on, PS3 start up, dark scenes in movies). During lighter scenes the buzz is almost wholly absorbed by the audio. Does this seems to be different from most posters' experience?

I haven't yet decided what to do, but the box was discarded during delivery. Anyone know if it's possible to return to Amazon minus the box??

I just bought a PN50B650 and I sit roughly 5 feet from the television. Mine buzzes, but it has the sound and volume of a flourescent bulb. I can hear it when there is no signal going to the television, but not when I'm actually watching something. I'm used to using my XBOX 360 as a dvd player and game machine though so the tv would have to be pretty loud to be audible over the 360. I think my tv's buzzing sound is normal and not excessive.

Just curious, but have any of you guys that have one of the PN**B860 models with a buzzing issue purchased a Squaretrade warranty and reported it to them ? I just picked a PN58B860 and was wondering if that warranty would cover that problem.

Personally, I'd contact Samsung about it and see what they can do about the buzzing since it's covered in their one-year manufacturer's warranty. It'd most likely be much easier than dealing with a return.
Speaking of the manufacturer's warranty. Does that still stand if the tv was purchased on ebay ?
@mojojojo7176:I think as long as you purchase through an authorized Samsung dealer on Ebay, the regular warranty should apply. The seller should be able to confirm this though.

I'll contact Samsung and inquire what they can do for my set. Though having read this thread and others, I fear they will not have a remedy for this problem (or claim it qualifies as normal). In this case I would really want to exchange the set for something other than a buzzin Samsung plasma (an LED or 2010 Panny plasma perhaps), which would mean negotiating a boxless return to Amazon.

I wonder has anyone had success in mounting the panel (wall or pedestal) at a height above regular eye level to avoid the buzz field??? It's a beautiful TV and I hate to get rid of it without exhausting my options.

UPDATE ~ UPDATE ~ UPDATE: This is an update on the Samsung 58" Plasma TV - PN58B550 I purchased around the second week of February. STILL ABSOLUTELY NO BUZZ! YES! I was just reading a comment above that stated there set was Manufactured In Hungary, So I decided to look on the box (which I still have) to see where mine was Manufactured, on the outside of the BOX, it say MEXICO. I wonder for the people who have NO Buzz, like myself, if theres came from Hungary, Mexico or where ever. I know someone will read this and say the location that the tv was manufactured in doesn't matter, but who knows. Anyway, mine is still not buzzing, not even a little! Will keep you all updated at least monthly.

Mine buzzes about as loud as a flourescent bulb. It's from Mexico.

wanted to throw in my review.

purchased my PN50B860 march 7 from amazon. immediatly heard a slight buzz at my main viewing location. I called samsung and they had a repair guy head over and add a washer and replaced a circuit board. He told me he would not be able to eliminate the buzz but might be able to reduce it. Its been a week since he did this and I still hear the buzz. its now April 5th so I called amazon and explained my problem and they said that normally they replace the unit for one that hopefully would not have a buzz but then promptly told me they were out of stock and would only be able to issue a full refund (amazon rocks).

I loved everything about the tv except the buzz drove me crazy. If you are lucky to get one without a buzz then thank your lucky stars.

overall i would not recommend this plasma to friends as the chance of a buzzing set seem quite high.

Got a pn58b550 that's got the buzz (Nov. 2009 build), but it's completely tolerable. I think if some forum members listened to it, they'd disagree with me though. I can definitely see what all the fuss is about, but I've got other issues with the set (see my posts in the horizontal line bleed thread) that are definitely more prominent. I compared the buzz to a standard Philips tube TV in the other room, and it's about the same (even though the tube TV is 30"), so I figure this is fairly common. Luckily, if I'm not listening for it, I can completely ignore it. However, it would be a surprise if some didn't have any buzz at all, as plasma is related to CRT, and those pretty much always buzz...at any rate, it's good to know that I can call a tech back out about this (if it gets annoying), and if it's something Samsung can't fix, they'll eventually refund the purchase price (after 3 trips out).

I purchased the 50PNB850 yesterday from FutureShop in Canada. The picture quality is awesome, but the loud buzzing noise it makes is unbearable.

I am returning it today

I also purchase this last week. This is my second 50B850 even thou this one buzz less but still unbearable. I really love this tv and actually contact samsung to ask for a fix but the contract technician says it's normal for this TV and recommend me to return it.

I read this on Amazon.

I managed to quell the roar by wedging a roll of scotch tape between the lower left hand side of the TV and the wall, which would seem to indicate the power supply is causing the outer housing to vibrate. Regardless, some have found this trick to work,

I would be curious of a thread that asked if you had buzzing or not on a wall mounted TV vs. a stand TV.

Purchased a PN50B860 from Amazon about a month ago. No buzz. Works perfectly. Made in Tijuana.
Just picked up a PN50B860. I do have the buzzing described by many. It is audible from just a few feet away or up to 8 feet away as long as the volume is on mute. It seems to change levels when the channel is switched and/or the brightness of the display changes.

The buzzing is practically inaudible unless the rest of the room is dead silent. I have a home theater system and when listening to most broadcasts, the buzz doesn't really bother me. My xbox360 is much louder when powered on. Even my Scientific Atlantic HD-DVR cable box makes more noise.

I understand Plasma panel buzz is a normal phenomenon and have read a few posts regarding a samsung tsb and the install of rubber washers/grommets on the back panel. I am unsure whether or not this will actually fix the problem? I am also within my 30 days to return/exchange the unit and have considered trying another B860 only because many avs members have mentioned (no buzz).

Not sure whether to open a service request to try the samsung tsb, try swapping it out for another or just keep what I have and be happy

My B860 was manufactured in Mexico Feb. 2010

I listened at night at -49db from my Denon without the buzz being heard, but over the last few days it is awful at this level. I guess I should call Sammy to come give me some BS about plasmas buzzing normally. Then I will take them to the other room where a 5 year old Panny is dead quiet and let them try to explain. I really loved this television, but know it seems like I'm doomed.

Tech came today. Nice guy. He said he heard it & would see what Samsung wanted to do about it. I will update.

My B860 was manufactured in Mexico Feb. 2010

I gave up trying to get it fixed and kept my B850.
I went though 3 tvs and finally just sucked it up and kept it. After a while you end up just ignoring it. Yes it sucks but in 5 years or so ill buy another TV and get over it. The picture is fantastic if lots of people are over watching there is no way you will hear the buzz. I also have a full surround sound that helps eliminate the buzz. I heard some people with C series have the buzz to which is a real shame.

Just got a C to replace a B with buzzing and in my situation it has a similar buzz but it doesn't carry like my B550 did. The buzz is still from the electrical noise that comes from the back of the set. Front and center about 4-5 feet I can hear it and it is pretty similar to my B550's buzz. The good thing though is that the further I'm sitting back the less buzz I hear, so it doesn't seem to carry like the last set. Also the heatsinks are designed different on this set so maybe that has something to do with it.

The TV only has about 6 or so hours on it, so maybe the buzz will settle even more. I hope so.

Is the "C" series the new Plasma?
Just this morning I walked by the tv when it was off and noticed that the buzz is there when the tv is off. Only on the back of the tv not in the front. Has anyone ever notied this?
Samsung tech visited on Friday. He spoke very little English, but enough to indicate there's not much he could do. He acknowledged he could hear the buzz at my 12 ft viewing location and brought the rubber washers, but indicates since it wasn't a vibration noise, it wouldn't help.

I had hoped maybe to solve the problem by mounting the panel high enough where the buzz wouldn't present an issue, but I know longer think that's an option.

It's a real shame, but I guess it's going back to Amazon.

Hopefully not a silly question, but does altitude above sea level have anything to do with the buzz. I live pretty much AT sea level and have never heard the "plasma buzz" ? Hope that doesnt sound stupid

Here is what worked for me.

58B860
have a look
http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z18/coolandmellow/

Here is my SAMSUNG PN58B860 with a contemporary modern set up.This is about as close to a wall as any TV can get infact,it can not get any closer 0.3" from the wall and the Samsung usb wifi dongle and power cable slightly rubs the wall ,so as to make the bottom of the plasma ,have a slight ,larger gap by a millimeter or so ,barely noticeable only from the side and that is if you look carefully.Anyway this is a white Laquer TV unit and the best news or part of it all for everyone in this forum ,is that mounting it this close to the wall actually eliminates 90% of the slight buzzing sound, also keeps TV cooler and allows for a cool blue LED ambient light that everyone craves for against a white, off white or biege backround.

I would say that the height of the install would be the biggest factor at reducing your ability to hear whatever plasma hum is created by your set. Rmember that plasma hum comes fromt the front of the set while mechanical buzz comes from the rear of the set.

I am moving my set up 11 inches to see if I can get the hum sweet spot away from my face.

Well i listened to it standing up close to it as well and the buzz was not nearly as apparent either.
Also i have increased the viewing distance to 12 feet.

I am glad that the set up helped out your buzz! Hopefully my new one will too.
