The Sony is most likely going to be Sharp Glass if one understands Sony has no capacity to make 65" cuts at a price close to the Sharp panels - were they custom like the 70" it would be beyond affordability. Plus Sony is a 39% partner with Sharp in the new plant opening in Japan in October 5 months ahead of schedule. Sharp is able to make 65" cuts economically.
However, the Sharp glass will then get the guts and VP of Sony which I find to be the best of class for matte screen panels. I own both Sharp and Sony and in todays market I would choose Sony as long as they don't lock down that assinine auto dimming - at least Sharp let's you turn their's OFF "OPC" which I find annoying as hell for a few minutes that I tried it 3 years ago and then disabled it on my Sharp's.
I understand some hesitancy with Sharp with the banding in the past but I have no banding and have never had a single issue with my Sharps 3, 4yrs or my 23" Sony in my kitchen 5.5 yrs. Considering no other LCD panel builder comes close to 65" choices are slim and the difference between 55" and 65" is huge when it comes to HT immersion.
I've waited 3 years for a 65" that can improve it's black levels that could be more like the Samsung B650> and the new Toshiba 650 and hopefully the Sony will be or I'll wait until the Sharp XS1 LED LCD gets pricing under $7K. You missed the true Sharp performer at 65" but for now it's priced at $15K - the day the XS1 becomes mainstream is when Sharp returns to where they were four years ago - they were the Elite of LCD back then believe it or not and it's almost as if they've been standing still and let the competition leapfrog past with the exception of the XS1 LED LCD. Owned plasma in my sunny room and it was a POS - so please don't go there as I would not take one for free unless I could resell it.
