I have no experience with the sony but I replaced a Yamaha rx-v663 (last yr's model) with the panasonic sa-bx500. I can't give you an in-depth comparison as it's been 2-3 months since I made the switch but I just preferred the sound of the panasonic overall. The Yamaha was too forward for my taste. Not a big bifference during movie watching (perhaps the dialogue was a bit clearer on the panasonic) but I did detect an audible difference in music playback both for cd's and sacds. The panasonic simply sounded more pleasing to my ears.
