I dont have it, yet, but from what ive read: this is an NMT with syabas FW and the NMT tools can be installed.

However, this can only be done on a SATA HDD attached to the SATA port on the side !! it cannot be installede on a stick or hdd attached via usb.

to me that sounds stupid, but thats the way it is.

so in short: NMT apps yes, but get a SATA drive!

I would said WDTV player does render the picture and subtitle at 1% to 2% better (much more noticeable on xvid file compare to mkv files). However M34A run the video much more smoother than WDTV. In my option, M34A is much more sophisticated player than WDTV because M34A player have more option for zoom, subtitle, sound, and many other setting. I already decided to sell my WDTV to keep this brilliant player.

thank you for sharing!

- picture quality with non HD material, is it watchable ? is the upscaling good enough ?
- did you encounter any framerate issues? ie stutters due to not matching source and tv frequency ?
- how fast is booting from standby ?
- did you try dvd (iso/vob), do they work ok ?
- how is the responsiveness of the remote ? when you hit play/pause/volume buttons...does it response quickly ?

thanks or answering.

Yes, I did download the latest firmware and just browse to usbupdate.html on your USB Drive to update.

ok, thanks..btw, which fw did you download from that page ? February (EG-M31B-SF-20090201) ?

I think the picture quality look fine for SD material and there is so many zoom setting that will satisfy with your SD viewing experience.

No, I did not see any framerate issue yet. To be honest I don't know what cause the stutters on few video files on my WDTV player. So far, about 65 video I tested on this media tank did play perfectly.

I don't think this player have a standby mode. I always turn it off when I am done using it because the player can get really hot after only few hour of use.

I did test one iso file and it did run smooth with very high quality picture. My buddy thought he was watching blu ray format, lol. I am very impressed with the quality on the iso file compare to xvid files. Iso files does include DVD menu and extras.

Original remote is responding pretty good. But I use a Logitech Harmony 676 remote and it is working much faster than WDTV due to low delay.

Yes, I believe February (EG-M31B-SF-20090201) is the latest one out there. I heard that Egreat will release a new one with DTS downmixing option very soon.

It sounds very impressive. Looks like Egreat has kept their promise and developed a real WD TV killer .
WD TV 2 should be equal to Egreat M34A.

Can you tell us what boot up time is when power switch is on?

really? there should be a standby option. in standby it wakes up quicker then a full boot.

how long does a full boot take ?

45 sec - 1 min. for a cold boot.

Although the original remote does not have a Standby/Resume button my Harmony remote has them listed. I programmed my Harmony with the database of the 31b since they don't have the 34a listed yet. I think they are very similar.

I now have the option for Standby and Resume.

It took 3 secs to come out of Standby.

When you go into standby it cuts the video and the hard drive spins down.

The next thing for me to test if it stays warm/hot in standby mode and how much power it draws.

Nope. That turns it completely off. Maybe there is a sequence of keys that could do this?
I know this is probably way at the bottom of people's lists, but can you comment on the Egreat's photo slide show capabilities? Can it read the EXIF data in JPEG's and auto-rotate those pictures that are shot side-ways?

Lets make something clear

behind the box there is a power switch on/off. So if you turn the power switch on this device doesnt boot? or it does with 45sec to 1 minute.

If you press the red button on the remote it shuts the egreat completely off. Even if the power switch is on?
if you press the red button to activate it, the boot time is also 45sec to 1 minute?

can you conclude the power switch does not has a function? because with the red button you can turn this device completely off

If the switch is off and you turn it on it will cold boot w/o using the remote (45s-1m)
Yes
Yes
Yes, i guess so..but you wouldn't be able to Standby/Resume with the switch off. Just like the switch on the power supply of your computer.

When I push a standby button on my logitech remote but I can't turn the player back on when I press the same button again. Do I need to add a resume button on my logitech remote?

I just test this with a online stopwatch site. The accurate time is 1 minutes and 17 second to completely load from a cold boot. I will find out how long it will take the player to boot from a standby mode.

You need to add resume key. If you want to use standby and resume all of the time you will need to adjust the power settings in your Harmony settings.

I like the WDTV that I have - but I'm having various glitches with it. From what I'm reading this unit seems more in line with my needs.

My real question, though, is this. Can this play Blu-ray rips in MKV format (created with MakeMKV) from a local USB drive glitch-free? Right now, it's touch-and-go with the WDTV that I have.

Also, how about the network performance? Could I play these files across my LAN? Not a big deal if I can't - but just wanted to ask.

I'm sorry if this has been asked and I know that the unit is supposed to be capable of doing these things - but I can't seem to find a definitive post from anyone that has done this.

Thanks!

I too am interested in this, and it _is_ a big deal for me as I just moved my 2TB of video onto a D-Link DNS-323 NAS.

also if someone could please comment on the photo slide show capabilities that would be great.

I already test ton of MKV files on this media tank and did not see any glitch or stutter unlike the WDTV player.

I just test a 6.5 GB MKV file and it is running smooth with subtitle. The quality is 100% same as running the file through external USB drive.

Photo slide show is similar to WDTV but the fade in option on this player look better & smooth. There is 4 option for photo transition such as fade in, zoom in, slide from left and slide from right. You can choose from 4 seconds to 600 seconds for photo interval.

Also, the bootup from the standby mode will take at least 5 seconds turn your player on. But the player will get hot during the standby mode, this is why I prefer to turn it off instead leaving it in standby mode.
is there any delay before playing a file from the network, maybe several seconds of buffering? any delay in between displaying or auto-rotating large jpegs? (these of course are all important WAF issues!)

now that is weird and doesnt make sense to me. so the only power on/off you have through either hard switch or remote is complete power off/on ? thats stupid. they should have put standby /resume on the remote button and let the hard power off be done through the back switch, imho.

sure a true power off through remote is very handy!! its a rare feature with NMTs (i think). But leaving out the standby button...jeez

i mean i wouldnt mind if ful boot takes like 10sec or so....but i really dont want to wait for 1 minute plus every time i want to watch a movie. my kids would get impatient for sure

basically, if you want standby/resume with the m34a, you need a seperate RC to do this. (does the 31b have a standby button?)

edit: they shouldve made it so a short press would be standby/resume and a longer (3secs) would be a total power off/boot. man why is it that these companies cannot come up with this stuff ? they have been making players for a long time now....has nobody complaint or suggested this to them ? is it just me making a fuzz ?

edit2: i found this on the egreat website:

Press Power = Standby (Video DAC shutdown)
Press Power + Eject = Soft reboot
Press Power + Delete\\Clear = shutdown

but it seems it doesnt work like that with the m34a ?

can some one try this out and tell us which functions it holds?

The remote holds enough buttons to cover the many functions of the NMT firmware and players but as with all other NMT players uses a lot of shortcuts to execute commands as TV-Mode selection (press TV-Mode + numeric buttons), copy functions and standby / shutdown / reboot.

I have read in a review press TV-Mode (on the remote) + numeric buttons (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9) and you should see several functions. Like copy paste/shutdown/reboot or standby mode. So if some-one could try this and tell us, would be much appreciated.

I think all of these change the video output resolution.

- TV Mode + 0 = Auto mode
- TV Mode + 1 = Component/Composite NTSC 480i
- TV Mode + 2 = Component/Composite PAL 576i
- TV Mode + 3 = reserved
- TV Mode + 4 = HDMI/Component 720p50
- TV Mode + 5 = HDMI/Component 1080i50
- TV Mode + 6 = HDMI/Component 1080p50
- TV Mode + 7 = HDMI/Component 720p60
- TV Mode + 8 = HDMI/Component 1080i60
- TV Mode + 9 = HDMI/Component 1080p60
