Onkyo HT-S9100THX + PS3 Optimal Settings

I was comparing the available sound formats PS3 can output alongside the listening modes my 9100 can handle. It seems like the 9100 can handle every single sound PS3 can throw at it except AAC. Is that correct? Also, looking at the compatibility chart in the Onkyo manual, it seems like I should have my mode set for Music-direct since it is able to handle every single sound format.

Am I correct in thinking all of this or am I confused?

The PS3 does all the sound codec decoding internally..it passes all steams through Linear PCM..does mot matter if it is TRUE HD or DTS HD Master Audio or down to 2 channel stereo...those indicators won't show up on the receiver..it just passes them along already decoded so the receiver doesn't have to do anything aside from send the signal out to the speakers. It cannot do bitsteam (due to hardware not software limitations) but that is no problem, i challenge pretty much anyone to listen to 2 signals and tell me the difference between each.

So I'm in no danger of damaging my speakers despite Sony's "Hey buddy, you better know what you're doing or you're going to regret it" message they displayed after I enabled every stream except AAC?

You are fine...this is probably what you are thinking about "Users are reporting a loud "POP" that is described as a loud firework or gunshot when using certain receivers like Yamaha or Onkyo/Integra AND bitstreaming DTS MA. This can damage your equipment!!!
The theory is certain receivers have a faulty DTS decoder chip and when coupled with certain DTS MA tracks, will cause this issue."

That does not apply to you since the PS3 does all decoding internally and then sends the signals Linear PCM instead of bitstream....It won't damage your speakers...might damage your ears from turning it up too loud though :-p...Have a good day

Can you post the extra tweaks you did after the auto setup to get the best sound out of the system.
