A Bug's Life (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review - Page 2

I will be extremely disappointed if this does not have all the prior features of the DVD.

The DVD had Music Only 2.0 and Sound Effects Only 5.1 tracks.

Watched this BD and the picture with sound quality was the reference one as the review.

I try playing my Bug's Life DVD on my PS3 and can't get it to fill the screen or It's just a small rectangle in the middle when I select widescreen. On my projector I have to zoom to make it look normal but it's distorted. This is on the 16:9 setting. What do I need to do? Is it a setting with the PS3?

There should be black-bars on top and bottom when watching the movie as the AR is 2.35:1

Are you seeing black-bars on the sides as well?

So, you have the DVD and not the new BD?

If so, the very first DVD release was non-anamorphic and would need to be zoomed on your tv for playback to get rid of the black bars on the left and right.

Just picked this movie up this morning. I'm looking forward to watching it tonight on my Elite. I haven't seen this movie since it's VHS release. Should be quite a difference in PQ lol.

ABL is, I think, the only Pixar film that I had not watched. I wasn't much into animated movies back in 1998 I guess. Anyway, I have finally watched this film in HD and enjoyed it. It's quite entertaining. The PQ is outstanding, as expected. It is somewhat expensive, compared to other Disney/Pixar releases, but at least it includes a free movie ticket for UP.

cheers!

the cover and the menu on the BD say DTS-HD MA 5.1. but my receiver is telling me i'm getting 3/3.1 or 6.1. is the 5.1 a misprint or is my system reading it wrong? my player is a Panny 35 and my receiver is a Denon 889 connected by HDMI.
It's a misprint I think. My receiver also showed six channels + .1 LFE when I watched ABL.

Probably just like Wall*E and Bolt......6.1 ES so it is not a discrete track. So tech 5.1 is correct you could say.

I watched this last night. I must say WOW! This is by far the best overall looking BR Movie I have watched so far. The details were amazing. I'm really happy this was re-released for the BR Platform. A Bug's Life was always my favorite of the Pixar/Disney lineup.

Dead-on review, Ralph. This was a buy for me (and my not-quite-3-year-old) and a fantastic one at that. Colors and details are just wonderful. Hard to believe it's ten years old given how stunning it looks. Some of the best casting of any film, animated or not, and some great lines. Thoroughly enjoyable characters and story.

Agree 100% on the pic quality...I didn't care for the purplish ants but aside from that its a FLAWLESS video presentation!

My receiver indicates it is DTS-HD Master audio format with 3/3/0.1 channels, although my BD player indicates 3/2.1 channels. So, would this be DTS-HD Master-ES? This format isn't listed on the DTS website.

That seems to be the consensus on Wall*E, Bolt and I assume we can add this one to that list as well. It is kind of a strange thing....

Just bought it off of Amazon yesterday, gets here next Tuesday. Oh, the nostalgia, I simply can't wait. This is my second favorite animated movie of all time. First being Tory Story.

That's what I was under the impression of. I recall seeing the info on blu-ray.com stating it was 3 discs, and I also remember Disney mentioning every BD release from now on will contain the DVD version as well. I guess they changed their minds on this one.

Ralph,

You nailed this one Ralph! Reference quality all the way through!

Here is a short review I gave last night on the Blu-ray PQ thread:

A Bug's Life

WOW!!!

The credits are rolling and that's all I can say after watching, BY FAR, the most colorful and detailed animated Blu-ray title of all! I won't add to the list of superlatives our friend Hugh gave to us yesterday, but let me just say I wholeheartedly agree with every word he said.

You will simply be amazed by the brilliant colors....GREENS never looked so good......REDS never looked so vivid.....BLUES never looked so gorgeous, etc., etc.

The blacks, though limited for the most part to a few night scenes, are deep and inky, with incredible shadow detail to boot.

Sharpness and detail are OFF THE CHARTS! Add to this a sense of depth and you have a title that demands a place at the top of Tier 0.

I suspect others will be chiming in with words of similar praise and that a consensus will soon be formed awarding A Bug's Life the #1 spot in Tier Blu.

Needless to say....

Tier Recommendation: Top of Tier 0

Just finished watching it and some of the special features.

Wow. The PQ is rock solid, glad to see Disney's continuously striving to improve their BD quality, can't wait for Monster's Inc., Toy Story 1&2 and Finding Nemo to release on Blu-Ray. The surround sound was in full use practically the entire time, and very very crisp, you could hear every single little footstep. The blacks were, as stated, inky, while the other colors maintaining vibrant and organic looking. This also has to be the sharpest transfer yet, though I could be wrong, it's just very, very sharp, almost as if they completely re-rendered it at 1080p.

Watched on a Samsung 61" HL61A750 at ~10ft, Sony PlayStation 3, and Sony 5.1 channel HT-SS2300.

Watched this the other night, and I have to agree this is an excellent Blu-ray. Whoever is responsible for bringing the Pixar titles to Blu-ray really knows what they're doing. Fantastic quality.

I also enjoyed the story, it's been quite a while since I saw this and had forgotten how much fun the characters and the story are. Since the beginning Pixar has focused on storytelling first and foremost, and that's what makes timeless movies.

Seeing this now, I also appreciate how far the animation technology has come. You can see the difference in how the characters move, they are much less realistic than in more recent Pixar films like Ratatouille. Same with wind, water, etc. The physics models have gotten so much more sophisticated since A Bug's Life was made.

I seem to remember that this movie was rendered at 720p. From the review it does not sound like it was upscaled, so was it re-rendered at 1080p for this release, or do I just have a faulty brain? (Not entirely unpossible...)
My wife and I watched this last night and I must agree with everyone that the pq and aq are top notch.

My wife had never seen it before I and I hadn't see it in over 10 years and that was on vhs.

I was tickled to see that the story is kinda a fun poke at Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven. I never put that together when I first watched it. I guess I was just to absorbed in the animation in those days. I am glad they included the original Silly Symphonies short that was the inspiration for the movie. I remember watching that one when I was little.

I didn't know they ever rendered any Pixar movies lower than they do now, but if that's true, it does appear as though they've rerendered this one at 1080p. Wall-E and Ratatouille were downscaled from whichever to 1080p for their blu-ray releases (relatively obvious as they're blurry-ish in comparison).

Every Pixar film's accompanying short-film, so far, has had a newer or improved technique than the last. Sometimes that technique is incorporated in the film, sometimes it's incorporated into the next Pixar film. So, really, you could say that, yes, each Pixar film has a newer or more perfected technique/effect than the last.

Wow! Easily the most stunning animated BD I've seen to date, simply amazing!

Thanks again ralph for another spot on review

Agreed! This title is soon to be voted into the top spot on the Blu-ray PQ thread (everyone who has reviewed it has nominated it for #1 Blu-ray) and it deserves the accolades it's getting.
