At the top of the S&W test pattern, beneath the "300" and "400" there are boxes that are supposed to contain diagonal lines. These lines are not as visible on your NRS screenshot as they are on the earlier screenshots. There is less cross-contamination by the chroma on the diagonal lines in the NRS screenshot, which is good, but the less visible diagonal lines suggest lower luminance resolution, as though luminance frequency response is being sacrificed to pay for the cross-color suppression the NRS provides.

I had a teranex on order, but have just been informed by the dealer that it has the same composite video acquisition section as the BlackMagic Intensity range, i.e. 2D comb filter only, and not a very impressive one.

I am gutted! I assumed the teranex was going to be the solution to rule them all, but it seems you would need to go through a better comb filter *before* you get to the teranex.

Disappointing.

So my search is still on, anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried the RCA DRC8335? I've been trying to get my hands on one here in Canada, but without much luck.

The new terranex not having a great comb filter honestly doesn't surprise me...

That RCA dvd recorder/VCR one is TERRIBLE.. I have one sitting here, debating on whether to toss it or store it.. The one in my Sony TV was much better, so was the DVDO Edge, Crystalio...

You're sure its the exact same model? Your impressions seem to be at odds with a number of other users. I'd love to be able to see this thing for myself. If you're going to toss it--send me a PM. Maybe we can work something out...

It is the right model.. I went nuts trying to get the best laserdisc picture I could get, by far the best comb filters were in the Crystalio II, and the DVDO Edge. I tried the Entec, This dvd/vcr combo, the key digital, a Panasonic s-vhs machine, they all had dot crawl and noise.

Then you must definitely have had a magic special edition EDGE since the Edge's comb filter is just awful. I can't speak for the RCA (never had it), but I had the CII and the only CF to beat it is the one in my Pioneer DVD-R machine. The Edge is so far from both that it's ridiculous to even compare them.

No, I had the regular Edge.. I can tell a crappy picture from a good one.. and the Edge was a hell of a lot better than most of the other processors I tested, especially that RCA dvd/vcr combo unit. I know a the difference from a flickering image compaired to a solid image.. I know when there is dot crawl and when there is not.. so call it whatever you like, but I know what I saw and others who came to see saw the same thing.. dispite whether you think it is ridiculous or not!

And you're not mixing up CFs and VPs in general ?

With what deinterlacer and scaler did you test the RCA DVD/VCR combo ? Sounds a bit like you compared SOURCE > RCA UNIT > DISPLAY to SOURCE > EDGE > DISPLAY ...

I tried it more ways than I can remember, always the same results.. Horrible.

I found the CF in the edge was better than most gave it credit for with LD..

I tried the entec, the key digital This RCA unit, iscan duo, the iscan ultra, the ludgemom (spelling error I know, but it was the older one with what was supposed to be a fantastic CF)

Far and away the Crystailo was the best all around.. no question. The CF in my Sony KDS-a3000 was very good as well (yea, I was shocked too) and then the edge was just a good.. The rest were horrible in my testing, dot crawl, noise... just a mess..

Try a CLD-97 with the edge, it was pretty good.

On the older Lumagens (HDQ for example) you run into the problem that you get a nice CF, but it's kinda hard-chained to the mediocre SiI504, so you don't get nowhere the detail out of video deinterlacing as you do with the Edge.

The only one from your list which I didn't have on hand (yet) is the Duo. Is the CF design the same as in the Edge or is tuned down ?

HDQ, yes that was the one I tried.. that was horrible.. Unless there was an adjustment I could not find, I did not like that one at all.

I tell you this thoughl.. and off topic, I just picked up the xbr-65hx929 today.. OMG is this thing amazing, and the black levels are incredible!

indeed an incredible display - I have the 905. Unfortunately many of the 929 models suffer from banding issues - I hope yours is fine. And to get back on topic: the HX9's comb filter isn't great either wink.gif

With HX9 I meant my HX905 Sony TV.

If you were refering to the HLD-X9's comb filter (my LD player), then yes, the comb filter in the player is utter rubish. Completely broken as you can read in many other threads here on the board. There is nothing you have to watch out for, it's obvious the first second you use the s-video output.

I remember seeing a pioneer dvd-r machine at your place when I stopped by to pick up the C2. You said you didnt like the picture.

I agree with your results. C2 brings my LD picture near DVD. I have 2 squeezed LDs, those match DVD resolution. C2 is an amazing machine. If only it had HDMI 1.3, it would still rule the VP market.

I have tried the entech, dvdo vp30 abt102, faroudja nrs, 3d cf in my pioneer plasma, C2 was better than those by margin. Pio plasma was good but deinterlacing was poor.Also tried analog devices design 3d cf in my yamaha and denon receivers.

btw balboarules knows what he is talking. I have personaly seen him test all of those equipment

Its great seeing some life back in the VP forums! Even if this gear is old I love hearing about people's impressions of it.

I'm officially convinced the Crystalio II is the comb filter to beat. Fudoh shares the same opinion as balboarules and I about the Entech--so I know we see things similarly. I've known that Fudoh highly recommends the Crystalio II--now with balboarules chiming in I think I can officially say I wish I had a bit more money around a few months back when one was available. Doh!

I might just have to update the OP one of these days. I'm ready to declare a winner, though some zone plate captures through a Crystalio would probably help things...any takers?

So.. funny thing.. I sold my Edge to put towards the crystailo.. sold the crystalio as I have an Oppo BDP-83 blu ray, and nothing much left to be processed.. get the new tv, it does 3D, not a big deal but if I can use it from time to time I will.. my receiver does not pass 1.4.. so just ordered another edge because of the seperate audio out via hdmi to use with 3D for the playstation 3.. Funny how you need something.. then you don't, than you do again..

Fudoh has a very good deal for someone on the Crystalio II by the way.. I really don't need it.. but someone should snag it..

I've done exactly this type of thing. I think that's why I hoard old useless gear! I'm currently canvasing all my friends for an older ATI Radeon 3000 or 4000 series low profile PCI-E card. I'm not sure how many of those I gave away--and now I can't track one down because I need it once again! Doh!

As for the EDGE re-buy: wouldn't a monoprice HDMI matrix switch have been a lot less expensive? Just wondering out loud...

I am having issues with Crystalio II's EDID. I wonder if DR HDMI or Gefen HDMI Detective can help me.

I have my output set to 4:2:2(or 4:4:4) colorspace. When I turn on my tv and crystalio II, my tv shows images in pink. I suspect my tv does not catch correct(or C2 does not tell tv) colorspace. I go into crystalio II's output menu and switch to RGB then back to 4:2:2 now I have correct colors/image. If i select RGB colorspace to output I dont have this issue. Looks like Crystalio II was offering EDID update some years back but I don't know if they will still do such thing.

I can't find much info about what Gefen HDMI detective or dr hdmi(by hdfury) allows you to select for colorspace.

I wonder where does XRGB-mini Framemeister stand as an external comb filter and deinterlacer for LaserDiscs? The pipeline I have in mind is CLD-97 --composite--> Framemeister --hdmi--> lumagen mini --hdmi--> plasma

I didn't try LD on the XRGB and I doubt that it would look great.

I did try a couple of composite video (gaming) sources and the results were ok. Dot crawl and rainbows were minimized for static images, but with scrolling games it doesn't look good.

If you try it, I don't think it's worth to chain the XRGB behind the Lumagen (unless you want the CMS for LD). The Marvell scaling in the XRGB is quite ok for video signals. You just need to adjust the scaling settings (H_SCALER to 5 and V_SCALER to your liking).
