There are many articles on AVS about the subject. It also helps a lot with eye strain. I highly recommend it.

However, depending on the color of the wall behind the set, it can be problematic if you're wife made you paint it a funky color. I was 'permitted' to use a neutral gray on the wall with the TV. Think Philips Ambi-light (I think that's what it is called), that actually works. :-)

Wow, I hadn't thought of that Will. Thanks for the idea!
I certainly intend to try and have Sony fix my set, but just in case not, I will certainly keep this in mind, and I may do it anyway.
It would be very easy to implement in my setup too.
I wonder how I could get it to automatically turn on and off with the tv... any advice?

How many Z5100 owners use the MotionFlow? There is an option to turn it off correct? If so, does it drop to 60Hz or 120Hz?

I'm still stuck trying to decide between a 52Z5100 and the new 52EX700, but see many comments about most 240Hz displays looking 'strange'.

Not sure what strange means. I absolutely love this set.

I've seen many reviews saying that the 240Hz displays sometimes give a 'soap opera effect' or something along those lines...

I have a 40 z4100, it was a good deal ,looks great and has been trouble free which means alot to me. Have been looking at the z or w 5100 for a second set and could not tell a difference on 120 vs 240 at BB. Other than that are they the same set?

I looked at the new Sony models , am staying away from led, seems too new. Is that dumb?

Ron,
I'm leaning your way too. See so many reviews and debates that LED gives better blacks and color representation and just as many others say CCFL gives better color representation, each with their own tiny annoyances. Then again I'm not a videophile, just an average Joe TV watcher. The Z5100 is a few hundred less than the upcoming EX700, so probably going to get the Z and put the savings towards a stand.

Do you guys know if there are some 52" Z5100 somewhere in Canada that are not demos?

I use a bias light w/ my table mounted Z and used one on my previous E3000..
They definitely help the eye strain for late night viewing. Personally I would say it doesn't help very much with flashlighting.

Does your receiver or cable/sat box have a switched outlet?

Yes, but the a/v rack is on the opposite side of the room as the tv.
I could run the electric over to it, but was just looking for an easier way.
Thanks for the feedback.

Dave,

The best I've been able to achieve with power is to connect the light to a switched outlet in the room. Since we only go into the family room for the purpose of the HT, it works for us. Good luck!

Oh, and GO TEAM USA!!! I feel so sorry for Canada...But! We haven't beaten them since 1960. My jaw was on the floor for an hour last night. What a game!

A gold medal for Men's Hockey would mean so much to us in The States. It's been a long time.

A switched outlet... genius. I hadn't thought of that either.

You feel sorry for Canada?... not me.
That gold medal would indeed be terrific.

You do not wanna start a Canada-US hockey flame war here...
Oh c'mon, there's no "flame war".
I do not mean to insinuate anything negative about Canada's team.
Just happy for our country's win and the potential to rekindle victory from decades ago. I think the USA deserves it by now.
It's all in the spirit of the games. No flames were intended. Being in Canada many times has tought me that our friends in Canada take this very seriously, as do many of us here. But come on, we haven't beaten Canada in 50 years! Best of luck to TC. You can still get 4 straight for the gold

Logic would dictate for you to ask questions and search in the Yamaha 665 owners thread if your AVR is the same as the 665.

Dude...I did not, nor do I have the right or compulsion to kick anybody out. I responded to you with, what I thought to be, coherent and feasible solutions to your issue. I stand by my original assessment that it is a setting issue in your AVR.

That being said, if I was a Yamaha owner, I would be better equipped to help you. Since you told me that 24fps is being passed when you connect your source directly to your Z, this tells me that either a) you have a setting(s) issue in your AVR or b) your AVR is defective. Now, I have a much stronger confidence that a) is the problem. I'm not going to read the 6260 manual for you.

If someone can either 'call me out' or correct my theory, I welcome it. I told you that this was my 'best guess'. Have you tried going through the settings? Have you read the manual? Have you Googled your issue to see if any additional information is available?

I don't mean to be harsh, but when someone uses the phrase "kicked me out" and my name in the same post, I get a little defensive. I always take great care to give what I believe to be the best information that I know or have learned from others. I always strive to be polite and as kind as I can be with everyone here. Please do not imply that I am some sort of police officer or tyrant that tells people to leave the thread or forum...Will

EDIT: PS...While perusing Yamaha's website, I found that there were three firmware updates released last year. I would have read the manual but I have to open an account with Yamaha, which respectfully, I'm not going to do.

Edit 2...BigBrownPimpsta I reviewed your previous posts in the AVR forums. The reason they (one member in particular) are kicking you back here is how you are asking the question. The refresh rate of the TV has nothing to do with the AVR. The way I interpreted your issue is that the AVR is not passing 24 frame content. If you ask your question in the AVR forum without mentioning anything about 240hz, you will probably have a lot more luck.

Understand that regardless of what you are feeding an LCD, or any fixed resolution display, the refresh rate will not change. That is why the refresh rates on modern sets that can accept 24 frame content are all divisible by 24, 30 and 60.

I good idea, but for the fact I have a 3yr old and a 5yr old.

(Sorry guys, I didn't mean to hijack with what is essentially off topic talk. I'll continue in the proper forum whaen I decide to execute the project.)

Good one! However, I can't get the image of the lady from the commercial replaced with Dave, clapping to turn the lights on and off!

Dave, another thing you can look at is X-10. I used a complete home setup two houses ago. I had a macro on my first generation Pronto that would dim the lights, turn on the rack and set the inputs. They've got to still be making those...Will

I'd like to set up one of those lights behind my TV as well. One of those 6500K bulbs. Do them make small strips?

Just got the new Z set up with part of your settings. Thanks! What a great place to start. Using just your settings for a directv box and WOW...watching the Olympic hockey game and its just right-on. I don't notice any clouding on this set either.
1) how do you check for fw version?
2) steps for dismissing the SONY logo light. (although it doesn't really bother me)
Have to remember to eat some din-din tonight...

Postal,

To check firmware goto Home/Product support/ Software update
should show current firmware, I don't recall if you need to have the
network configured to do so off the top of my head...

Sony logo is Home/Preferences/Logo Illumination
also hit that HD signal indicator while your in there

Enjoy

I started watching my 40Z last night. It was too high so tonight I got an el cheapo stand and have it all set up. I still haven't customized anything on it yet. It's using out of the box settings. My initial impression: WOW, what a picture! I am so happy I stumbled upon a crazy deal. I think I will get to tweaking it later in the week. For now I am very happy. Though I wish I had measured my TOSLink cable and ordered one when I ordered an antenna from Monoprice last night. It's too short to go from TV to receiver.

How do you guys have the wide setting? I cannot stand SD signals stretched so I have native on my DirecTV receiver set and the TV on Full wide mode, auto on, 4:3 normal. Is that the best way?

Don't know if this helps, but I bought a 52" Z from Best Buy in Vancouver (Cambie street location) 2 weeks ago, they had 3 more unopened in stock at the time.

Hey thanks steppinrazer! Got the logo done and checked which fw I have. Its aa0136fn. Think it's a little outdated. Went to the Sony site and downloaded the latest (aa0153pn) on a fat32 formatted USB stick.
What are the steps needed to update the fw without using a ethernet cable?
Enjoy'n it

Just getting started with my 40Z. I have Full Wide. Also have DirecTV so went to Menu>Setup>System Setup>HDTV>Native on, Screen Format Original, TV ratio 16:9, TV Resolutions tick 1080p,1080i. You can also tick 480p and 720p if you want. Hope this helps as I'm still learning ...

John,

Yes. The one I use is a 36" long. The perfect size, IMHO. I bought it at Lowe's. I wish I could read the manufacturer's name off of the bulb but it is pretty smeared.

I remember distinctly that it was an aquarium bulb, that it was touted as 'natural light' and did specify 6500 Kelvin on the back. I replaced the original bulb in one of those cheap, under the counter mount, GE lights.

I hope this helps...Will

Or how about his light flipping on and off everytime the commercial is showing on his tv? THAT would be hilarious!
