It plays HD titles fine, they're just not in HD. Is your orange HD light illuminating?

Same here. I loaded up Reservoir Dogs in HD, looked like crap, no orange HD light.

Loaded up the same movie on my PS3's netflix, looked great, orange HD light.

Weird. I'm be pretty pissed if i didn't have the PS3.

Haha yeah, for some reason it looked like real crap, evenmworse than normal SD titles. BTW, I have the W5100, so it isn't just the z5100.

I "chatted" Sony tech support and got referred to call the special hotline at 239-768-7547. I'm not that motivated at the moment, but i thought i'd share the number.

yeah guys we need to call sony so they're aware and can fix this now.. basically any HD streaming from both netflix and amazon are streaming in SD (actually almost looks worse than SD).

right now i am using netflix on PS3 to stream because the built-in steaming on the bravia is foobared.

didn't have any issues with the previous firmware (aa0176pn) until i upgraded to aa0194pn.

Did the same thing, upgraded to the new firmware, now no HD on Netflix on my TV, have to use my Blu-Ray player. I mean, has Sony gotten this bad? You can't trust that a simple firmware upgrade won't eliminate a major feature? Unbelievable.

What I really don't understand is why it is just Netflix and Amazon. I tried some of the other video content such as blip.tv and uStudio, and all HD titles there worked fine.

I too was having quality issues with netflix after updatding to aa0194pn (though I'm not sure the update is what caused it). After spending some time on the phone with sony, I spoke with the highest level of tech support. They told me they are aware of the problem and are working with netflix to resolve the issue. I further inquired about a time frame and was told that they didn't know.... but to keep checking netflix a few times a day. So... maybe that means like within a few days this should be resolved? So, they are aware of the problem and are working on it. However, if more people call that number, the more pressing the issue will become to sony. sony tech support phone number: 239.768.7547

i may be saying this too early, but the issue appears to be resolved... at least with netflix. I don't use amazon (the other streaming that had issues) so I wouldn't know about that, but netflix looks good. Thank you sony.

I upgraded to FW aa0194pn (from 176) the other day, and since then, I am unable to load Youtube on the TV. There wasn't even a busy spinning indicator in the top right corner of the screen. [Edit. After a reboot of the TV, I now get the spinning busy indicator when trying to load Youtube, but it just spins on and on and Youtube never actually loads.]

Other Sony Internet apps are loading and working fine, just not Youtube.

Anybody else experiencing this? Or is there some workaround?

(Since I used Youtube a lot on the TV before this upgrade, should I be able to downgrade back to, say, 178, and get a working Youtube again?)

I just noticed new setting in your account called "Manage video quality". I went there and nothing was checked. I checked "Best Quality" and quality is back. It may have nothing to do with firmware update.

Can you post instructions on how to access this thing? I don't see anything in the Netflix app that has this.

Nothing is resolved on my end...shows still look like crap and the orange HD light is still not illuminating.

UPDATE: After updating my video quality preference on the Netflix website in my account, HD works fine in Netflix.

Netflix, at least, is fixed on my end. Just for the record, I actually have a KDL-46XBR9, but the software is the same. Resumed watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I started the other day to test (and got a SD picture) and it was HD, and the HD light was on. Haven't tested any other service.

New update aa0195fn added on Sony website.

Adds Hulu Plus support along with some fixes and improvements.

Hulu plus huh? Interesting because I do not see it in the list on the tv.

If I read the Sony site correctly, it will not show up until you sign up for Hulu Plus. I'm thinking of giving it a try. Hulu does offer a one week trial, so it's worth a shot to see if it works.

Here's what the update says...
"Note: The Hulu Plus service will be added to the internet content once service is activated"

Cool, can you post how you got HULU working once you sign up and it shows up. I'm just curious how they figure out if you have a HULU plus account.

I just got an email from Hulu concerning the matter...

"Thanks for writing in! Unfortunately, we don't currently have support for any of Sony's TVs produced in 2009. We're constantly working with them to add support for these devices, but there is not an official timeline for support at this time."

So, I have no clue as to why Sony is showing Hulu Plus support with that update. I even chatted with Sony support and they were not aware of any update to 2009 models that gave Hulu Plus support.

I guess it's just wait and see.

I'm guessing the information about what's new in this firmware update is a mistake.

Might be a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

there is no hulu support because i signed up and do not see an option to get hulu to show up on the TV.

i even signed onto the sony.internet.tv site to manage my device content.. it shows amazon,etc but no hulu.

honestly i think they scraped the idea of putting hulu on 2009~ models. last year there was a hulu icon at one point on the xmb that said "coming this fall" but months went by and the icon just disappeared altogether and i haven't seen it since.

oh well, i'll probably cancel hulu after the week trial.. isnt going to be worth keeping without having the app on the TV.

Just to confirm, I spoke with PR level 2 (tier 2 tech support) and after speaking with a very informed tech, you could also not understand the reason the icon was not showing up, as it should under the video section, apparently the website has a typo for this TV. To reiterate the KDL-52W5150 DOES NOT and WILL NOT support HULU plus. oh well its what you get for owning 2 year old technology, thanks SONY

Sorry for the this useless message but I recently got a 40Z5100 and this thread is of my interest, but can't find a Subscribe button. So I'm posting this just to subscribe to the thread.

Oh well, I have a question. I'm outside of USA, and the TV Guide and Widgets don't work for me, I guess because of my country. Does anybody else have this problem? Is there any workaround or fix to this?

On gray bar 3 inches from the top of the page, on the right side, next to "search" button is "thread tools". There is a selection within "thread tools" to subscribe to the thread.

I was once a KDL-46Z5100 owner, and the widget that gave me trouble was Facebook. That was a few firmwares ago, so maybe one of the current owners can help you with your widget question.

Hi John! Good to see you again. Hope the summer is treating you well. Hot here in the south of course. Still loving my z5100! Bought a jvc soundbar a few months ago and it makes all the difference ( the z is not my main HT display but is in the Fam room for casual viewing).

ince getting the Z5100 52" I've been using the recomended settings from DSSkid on two different inputs; one for AT&T Uverse and one for BR. We've just got a new AVR to replace our 10+yr old Denon so we'll have HDMI switching. Should I leave Motion Flow and Cinemotion "off" for both now or with some other setting?

The last settings DSSKid posted is what I'm using and AT&T Uverse hasn't looked that good in awhile. I changed to them last weekend with the free HBO during that spell and coudn't believe my eyes. I watched "When We Were Soldiers" and it was dead on. Avat on HBO looked excellent. I fired up Transformers and Avatar on BR and I could see a better overall color esecially in skin tones.

I've got a KDL-52Z5100. I've updated the firmware by running a 25' ethernet cable across the room from my router to the TV.

I'd like to have a full time wireless connection to my network. Is there a dongle available that's compatible with the KDL-52Z5100?

I would just recommend getting a cheap wireless bridge. I got one from Newegg.com for like $30.
