John,
I believe Sports scene uses Motionflow in High, did you leave in High?

I used all my cable input Custom settings, General/Auto scene, which is Motionflow set to Normal, and Cinemotion set to Auto 2. The only thing I changed was the "clear white" setting. Motionflow set to High just doesn't work for me.

Hey guys...please clear some thing up for me...SCENE picture settings are just basically quick select options for various content that Sony thought would be appropriate...right? My thought is to use the various SCENEs with tweaks to make it easier for my family to enjoy the set. For example, I want my kid to be able to select GAME mode and enjoy the games with my tweaked settings. My other kid can choose CINEMA when watching a BluRay with my tweaked settings for that SCENE option. Then maybe AUTO(Custom) for merely watching HD SAT programs. The reason I ask if this will work is that I don't really see anyone using the SCENES option with tweaks...they seem to be using Auto and Custom.

Yes, that is correct.

So I experimented with the sport setting, which at default is excessively bright, and very blue in the grayscale. I proceeded to carry over my general/auto scene settings to the sport scene mode.

Rather than bump up backlight, contrast, brightness, gamma or switch to the warm 1 or nuetral temp setting (which introduces blue into the grayscale), because changing these settings affects the whole picture, and not just the ice surface, I tried engaging "clear white" setting. Using the clear white setting it appeared to whiten the ice service only, whether I set it to low or high, giving me the desired affect that I was looking for.

From there I switched between the scene modes and even turned the TV on and off. Know what? My settings stayed this time. Can't say what happened last time, perhaps a hiccup.

Then to see what inpact that this setting might have on other content (tv shows, movies, BD), I switched programming while still in the sport scened mode with "clear white" engaged. I was surprised not to notice any change. Engaging "clear white" didn't seem to affect skin tone or colors, or overall brightness. Jackpot! It seems that utilizing the setting only affected the picture where white is predominant in the scene (like the hockey ice surface), and seemed to "clean the ice up".

So in essence, I could leave this setting engaged for all content. Which would mean that I could add this setting to my general settings, and not have to switch "scene" modes for hockey games.

Keep in mind, I didn't pull out any equipment for this experiment, so it's simply a "by eye" observation. When I do my recal this weekend, I'll report back what my meter shows with the clear white setting on.

Just figured I'd mention this for all the Z5100 owners who are also hockey fans. You may want to give it a try and see how it works for you.

That's really cool. I had been wondering if the Clear White setting was anything worth while or not. Unless there is a lot of white on screen, it doesn't appear to do much of anything, but something like hockey ice will certainly show a difference.
Anxious to see if it alters grayscale.

As for the warm2 setting, I always have trouble using it... from a personal observation standpoint anyway.
It just looks so yellowed to me on screen.
During a normal view out of the front window of my house, I see warm2, but on screen warm1 just looks so much better to me.
You say it introduces blue into the grayscale, but is there a way to get the pic to look a bit more neutral without using a setting that is so warm?

As always, thanks for your input and response.

Yes, you can calibrate to warm 1, and adjust your white balance controls to get you to 6500 kelvin, or close enough. The only other thing is the color gamut. I noticed that the color gamut (primaries and secondaries) was more accurate with warm 2 than warm 1. But nothing is ever exact anyway, and if it looks better to you, that's what's important.

This is really interesting. I love watching hockey on this TV. Even more than on my Pioneer Kuro. I too found the ice a bit yellow so for now I was using SPORT with a version of Wills settings. I think I dialed up the backlight to 4 and Brightness but it really made everything POP. Personally I love the Motionflow high for only this viewing. I haven't tried Standard though. I certainly had to play with the Audio for hockey as the announcers were really low.

SO when you say "I proceeded to carry over my general/auto scene settings to the sport scene mode." do you mean you used your blu ray settings (from previous post) and simply used Clear White "ON"?

Are you using your blu ray settings for HD televison also?

Yes and clear white set to low or high (but not on for BD).

I posted this in the owners thread also. I finally got around to trying out your settings fo blu ray (I use it for HD Cable as well) and I have to tell you they are great. Not that much different than Will's but for my set, these settings look great. The only difference for me it the color setting has to be brought down to about 42.

I tried the settings for hockey with the clear white but I was not getting a great picture. THen by accident I put the TV on and the Olympics had womens hockey (18-0 for Canada, C'mon, can you say mercy rule) and the picture had great pop to it. So I imagine it was the feed for teh NHL game I was getting. I'll try it again.

Thanks John and Will for all you support on here.

KC,

Thank you for the kind words.

BTW, I'm going to give dsskid's settings a whirl once we get settled into the new house. I had to change wall colorings from a darker grey to a lighter one (Wife's idea, not mine!). Things look a bit off and I may want to look at this from a different perspective.

Morning Will! What the heck are you doing up at 5:43 in the AM? Is that the only time you can get on the forum without wifey asking why you aren't working on the house? LOL...

Nice to have you back on a (semi)-regular basis

Guys, I promised a recal this weekend, but unfortunately my boiler decided to take a cr@p on Sunday , and I had to have it replaced yesterday.

To be honest, I don't think I'm going to change my settings at all. I will take new readings this week, and post a report, but I really am satisfied the way it is set right now.

Disskid - I see that you are a Calibrator. Looks like this will be a great place to start once I have my Z5100 set up and warmed up. Will post my results...

Thanks for the shared effort ! (sorry to hear about the boiler)

I just received my 40Z5100. Now I need a stand for it. I guess I'll have to go through this thread then. Let me ask what has probably been rehashed elsewhere on the forum though.

A friend of mine said that Best Buy said the TV needs 600 hours of use before calibration? True or not? Should I experiment with what folks have listed here or just figure out what *I* like? I'm new to HDTV. I found a KILLER deal on this set and cannot wait to begin enjoying it.

Yes, I am. Will Munshower (and others) has put a lot of effort into his settings, and many are pleased with his as well. Try them both as starting points, and tweak to your room.

Best,

John

Congrats on your set!

600 hours??? Just goes to show you how little they know. The school of thought is 100 - 200 hrs for plasmas. I believe LCDs change less than plasmas, as they are not phosphor driven.

Truthfully, I haven't seen much change since my initial calibration, about 100 hours or so ago. The only change I made was to changing backlight from 3-4, and dropped brightness, from 52 to 50. Hopefully this week I'll be able to throw the meter on it to see if the grayscale has changed.

What is Best Buy charging these days for a calibration?

Thanks man. I found it at a ridiculous price. And it was shipped overnight when I thought it was going to be ground. I cannot wait to watch it. I just don't want to put it 52" off the floor and have a bad viewing angle. It pains me to wait though. LOL!

Yeah, well they are the same folks that say an HDMI cable is worth $100 for the cheap one. I think they charge around $300 for calibration. IIRC, I have heard the BB guys throwing out that number at times when I was looking there. That is also the amount my friend was telling me.

I preferred to hang my display on the wall. Didn't want one of my nephews knocking it over. The mount I bought from Monoprice.com (sponsor here at AVSForum) was under $20.

Anyone need the Sony KDL-46Z5100 stand? Free of course.

Whether you mount it on the wall, or on a stand, the trick is to sit down on your couch, or the seat you'll use for viewing, and follow you eye's path to the wall. Where your eyes' path comfortably hits the wall (or slightly above) is where you want to position the center of the screen. This will limit a poor horizontal viewing angle.

Regarding Calibration:

From what I've heard, many Best Buy calibrators (I can't say all, because that wouldn't be fair or accurate) are done in 10-20 minutes.

A full calibration, with two inputs, takes substantially more time than that, since most adjustments you make, interact with the other settings, which requires you to keep going back and forth until there are no adjustments to be made. Some of these adjustments on some displays require entering the service menu, but not with this model. Then when you're done with one input, you have to repeat the process on your other inputs.

When hiring a calibrator, always ask:
  • How long has he been doing calibrations.
  • Three References or more
  • What experience he has with your particular display model.
  • What equipment he utilizes during the calibration.
  • How long he anticipates the calibration to take.
  • What certifications he possesses.

Best,

John

dsskid,

Thanks for posting your settings.

Tried using your numbers, mostly great however I had MotionFlow set to standard, but kept freezing/skipping frames about every couple of minutes, so turned it off. Didn't try turning on Cinemotion though...may experiment with it.

Switching from watching hockey or college ball with Sports setting on to a movie really brought out the effect above.

csmith, your'e very welcome. I'm glad that you are enjoying the posted settings. I find MotionFlow and Cinemotion is very subjective, and content driven. I haven't quite nailed it down as of yet, and I often find myself switching between having them on or off.

I too bought a very nice cheap mount, but from Parts Express and it's pretty much the same as the ones from Monoprice.
It has a nice locking features for extra safety.
I just happen to be ordering some things from PE when I got it, otherwise I'd have ordered for Monoprice.
Gone are the days where you have to pay a couple hundred dollars for a quality mount.
Most of these mounts that cost $20, you could hang an elephant on them and they would not budge.

Hey Dave,
I agree. Nice to see that the prices on these have come down, and they haven't sacrificed quality.

The Monoprice mount is pretty sturdy, and has an adjustable bottom clip, but unfortunately, I need a 13" philips screwdriver to tighten it in place.

The clips prevents someone from lifting up the bottom, and with the Z stand that I have underneath, it's pretty unlikey. I'll eventually get around to locating a long enough philips screwdriver.

Best,

John

Yep, sounds exactly like the mount I bought from PE... possibly the same mount.
Notice on the back of the 46Z, that the configuration for the wall mount is in a small square shape, and that the actual "Sony brand" mount for the tv is also square.
So I purchased the smallest mount that would fit that configuration.
It's nice to look at the side of the tv and not see the mount, as it's kinda hidden back behind and not out toward the left/right edges of the tv.

I do remember having a very deep hole to tighten some of the screws for the mount.
I used my cordless drill, and piggybacked two extensions to reach where I needed to... standard screwdriver not long enough.

Hi,

I like these settings.

Based on the backlight of 4, I take it that you are not in a man-cave (as in a very dark room)?

Thanks

Actually, it is my man-cave (as my wife calls it) and it's quite dark in the evenings. But since I watch(ed) football in the afternoons, and love hockey, I found a backlight of 4 an all around good setting. IMO, 5 will give you eyestrain.

ISF Calibration performed after installing Sony's aa0153pn firmware.

Equipment utilized:
  • Eyeone Pro & Sencore OTC1000
  • CalMAN DPG1000 Digital Pattern Generator
  • CalMAN Pro Software

This calibration was performed in a completely darkened room.

Variances can be found within the same brand and model, and your viewing environment/lighting can differ from mine. My settings can be used as a starting point, but tweak where necessary. - Enjoy.

*Note, I only use one setting since my AVR does the switching of various sources, and U utilize only one HDMI input on the display.

**** I listed MotionFlow & Cinemotion as off for Blu ray, but when watching cable, I tend to leave Motionflow on Standard, and Cinemotion on Auto 2. Your mileage may vary. ****

09/15/10 - Interesting find. Using Spears & Musil Disc, and the low pluge pattern.....Brightness set at 51 and I can make out the checkboard background. At 50 I couldn't, but then at 49 I could see it again.
Decided to drop it to 49 and found a very slight improvement in black and shadow detail, so I'm using 49. Also dropped color from 40 to 38, as color seems more natural.
