I'm playing ME1 again after talking to Zath about it the other night.
Like he said the story in ME1 & 2 is great & the universe it takes place in is incredibly detailed and nuanced.
Originally I quit ME1 before completing the first mission because I got so frustrated with the combat.
When I restarted the other night I made sure I had a ME walkthrough wiki open on my laptop to help me through the rough spots.
The enemies are tough, weapons abilities have to be unlocked (not the weapons, the ability to use them) and your squadmates are idiots if you don't take the time to learn their abilities and when to use them. They also need constant direction which I hate having to deal with when facing down 2 assassins at close range.
