The MAKO, your vehicle, can be very annoying to drive. Almost all sidemissions are the same "drop on a planet, kill some dudes, fly away" which does get repeditive. The story is great, and you really don't expect what happens.

I'm playing ME1 again after talking to Zath about it the other night.
Like he said the story in ME1 & 2 is great & the universe it takes place in is incredibly detailed and nuanced.

Originally I quit ME1 before completing the first mission because I got so frustrated with the combat.
When I restarted the other night I made sure I had a ME walkthrough wiki open on my laptop to help me through the rough spots.
The enemies are tough, weapons abilities have to be unlocked (not the weapons, the ability to use them) and your squadmates are idiots if you don't take the time to learn their abilities and when to use them. They also need constant direction which I hate having to deal with when facing down 2 assassins at close range.

Jammy, I saw that last night! Thought about inviting you to a party to see how it was going.

What difficulty are you on? I thought it was normal but can't remember.

Fighting mechanics are a PITA since you don't know when you've lost shields or are almost dead. Here's what I learned about the game:

- Keep in cover. You can crouch behind stuff to heal up.
- Choose ONE weapon and build it up. Assault Rifles are way overpowered in this game. use it!
- Make sure to add health promotions, too, especially for your squadmates. I HIGHLY recommend Ashley with sniper rifle and Wrex with assault rifle. Ashley can snipe away and regenerate health. Wrex is a one-man wrecking crew.

BTW, Ace Combat demo is out today so I will probably be playing a lot of that tonight. Sorry in advance!

You guys are trying to play ME1 like an FPS -- if you play it as an RPG it's much easier and enjoyable IMHO. I think a lot wanted to play ME1 as an FPS so they really optimized that type of gameplay in ME2.

You can pause combat (was it LB button? I forgot), assign next "abilities" for your party and yourself. You can also use this for weapons. Line up enemy in your cross hairs, un-pause, shoot. You can always do this to aquire next target or use another ability, weapon etc.

Yup this saved me a couple times, especially if I was low on health.

And I agree about the RPG aspect - that's how I played it and had no issues with combat except a couple spots where the game throws lots at you at an early level (Therum, anyone?)

My suggestions were more for hardcore/insanity difficulty, but I figured they may help Jammy out if he is having difficulty!

Yeah, the gunplay in ME2 is actually as good as any third person shooter. ME1 was a little more of a dice roll with each shot. I think they went a little too far in ME2 by basically taking all the loot out. Both are still amazing games though. Thank god they delayed ME3 till march...I'll actually have some time to spare to play it now.

The main thing you need to know about ME2 on insanity is to use the geth shield boost as your new game plus skill. It increases your survivability a billion percent - not only does it boost your shield, but you can use it as an instant recharge. I don't know if I could have managed insanity without it.

I liked the combat in ME1 quite a bit. More than ME2 anyway. It felt more interactive from what I remember. ME2 seemed a lot easier, just button pushing in comparison. Less satisfying.
yeah plus ME2 added the whole "heat cargridge" crap as a way to make it even more like a shooter. The guns were totally balanced with heat anyway in ME1 - fire too much and overheat!

Normal diff.
Just got the Normandy & I'm out searching for Dr. Liara.
Decided to scan & then land on a mining planet with Garrus and Tali that is overrun with Geth. Drove the Mako around until I was forced to go onfoot for final battle for the refinery base.
Now I'm stuck.
There are these geth that climb the walls, drop down behind and kill us.
It's very frustrating.

If that's the part I'm thinking of, I definitely remember it being hard. The one where you fight some living ugly slug sort of monster that is in the very bottom?

I guarantee you he's not made it that far yet. That is the exact same place I got stuck - at the top of the hill, trying to get into the mine. For me, that was probably the single hardest fight in the game, largely because there are a lot of geth, and it is the first time you've got to really learn how to manage a gunfight. It was frustrating enough that I walked away from the game for a long time. I lost track of how many times I died.

I can't remember how I finally managed it, but basically - avoid getting flanked. That gives you some cover. So I think if you focus on the geth on the building first, you can get thru it. It's worth sticking with it, as the games are pretty good.

Yeah I remember that part too. It's a crazy difficulty spike....the rest of the game isn't that hard. I think you can temporarily drop the difficulty if you're having issues.

BTW, this discussion made me think of this...

Yup, that's it.
I'm out of town for work until Monday so I get a break from it regardless.

This is the Therum I was referring to in my previous post (that's the planet Liara is on). This fight is insanely difficult because of two reasons: 1, there's the Geth Colossus, and 2, there's the Geth snipers. Stand around too long, and the sniper will take you out in 1 or 2 shots. The Colossus will brute force attack you, which isn't fun, either. Here are my suggestions based on the squad you have with you, Jammy:

Garrus - he's super weak at this point. Wrex is a better choice, but since you have Garrus, be sure he is using his assault rifle. Order him to use shield boost if you notice his shields going down.

Tali - Good choice for this battle. If she has AI hacking, have her hack the Geth Colossus (giant big white thing of death). With it hacked, it will now start firing at its own geth and decimate them.

What are your talents? If you have Lift, you can try lifting the Colossus (depending on how many points are on Lift). Use an assault rifle if you can. Make sure any defensive talents are constantly used. Pause the action every 5 seconds or so to see what you can do and assess your team. Use first aid as often as you can - you MUST keep your squadmates alive. Use Unity if they fall and immediately followup with first aid.

Don't stand around in sight of the enemy (use cover) as much as possible. Don't forget you can change to casual difficulty. Don't feel bad for doing this - I would actually suggest you play on casual first anyways to learn the game and enjoy the story and RPG elements. Then increase as you go.

Also a tip - if you kill enemies using the MAKO, you get half the experience and half the credits. So when you run into a band of geth, get out and kill them yourself! Works for turrets, too, though you need to be more mindful of their rockets.

Mean while back on planet earth, a day before today, Russian troops are pushing in on Arica Harbor trying to destroy our comminication stations. U.S. company, Duke, Razor, Stealth, Zath, Robert, Revel, and Vernal, code name "AVS," are fights their a$$ off to re-gain control.

Hk! Here are the details about trading in games to bestbuy:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/...d.php?t=289581

BB is doing 50% trade in towards Gears 3. Also, like I said last night, check you local gamestop's and see if they're doing 50% trade in on any game (no powercard needed). The stores that are not doing well are doing this to stimulate business. I traded a few things in and got a gamestop gift card which can be used for any purchases.

Last night was pretty fun. Especially when Bertman ended up on the wrong side of Oasis and kept dropping off the chopper LOL

This happens often, restart your router.
I have only had that issue... once.

Last night was fun. Highlight for me was tracer darting a guy who decided to wait with me for the UAV. After getting hit 3 times, he looked down and threw a grenade and suicided. All I wanted him to do was toss down some ammo!

He came back with tracer darts and started tracering me. So ALL of us started tracering him LOL. Made it even funnier since he was in the bradley

I have literally chased some dipshits around, completely out of ammo, begging for them to drop a crate. I had one actually turn around and look at me one time (immediately after hitting the back button), and then turn back around and run off.

yeah that happens a lot! Same goes for medics and health or engineers and tanks. Even recons with motion mines. Free points, people!

As a rule, I always drop health or ammo when I spawn off my squadmates. Sometimes it gets me killed, but usually IO end up with a bunch of points!
I've started watching the "respawn" meter on those drops, and usually dropping as soon as I've got one ready to go (unless I'm moving to a location that I know will be a better drop).

Good games again last night.

But if there's one thing that still gets me about this game, it's the lobby population. I can understand both sides of the coin, people who don't want to join a losing / lopsided lobby, and people who don't want to play against no one, but this game is the most fun when it's 12v12 and it stinks that it's hard to ever play it like that.

On another note, it's ridiculous how good some snipers are. Hitting moving targets in the head from distances where they must be aiming half a body above them. Consistently. That is impressive. Sniping is super hard for me, mainly due to the fluidity of the movement while aiming. I'm so used to the super silky smooth aiming of COD, it's hard to adjust to the choppier, clunkier aiming. I've gotten alright with the regular aiming, but for sniping, precise movements and stuff, it's still really tough.

I have a great deal easier time sniping in bc2 cause your damn sight isn't constantly swaying. Once you get used to the idea of bullet travel and drop, it's pretty damn fun to snipe. Since you can hide yourself pretty well most of the time, you can relax and line up the perfect shot.
It took me a while to get the hang of sniping on BC2. I agree that I'm glad the sway isn't that ridiculous sway they have in COD, but bullet drop and the insane distances can make it tough. At first, I was useless with a sniper rifle - might as well have been a baseball bat. I still have a hard time with erratic movement, but if you are standing still, I can hit you - probably in the head - from nearly any range. If you are running in a straight line, then I can probably get you COM.
