Anyone use the Harmony 880 with the 1019? I'm having issues with the receiver not switching to the right input from standby. For example, say I'm watching TV and have the receiver set to TV/SAT and then turn it off. If I select "Watch Movies" on my Harmony - which should tell the receiver to switch to BD input, it just turns on the receiver but doesn't switch to BD. It stays on TV/Sat. I have to manually switch the input via the devices selection on the remote or on the receiver itself. Anyone know how to fix this?

I just received my 1019 and I'm configuring. Its in an AV rack that's fully open on the front, sides and rear. There's about 10cm between the top of the receiver and the shelf above it in the rack. I know the manual says it should be 60cm but I figured the open sides and rear should help. This thing is running pretty hot on top of the receiver after only about 20 minutes of viewing a movie. Is this within normal range or potentially dangerous? Like bricking dangerous?

So you have 3+ inches clearance? This might help:

it is a cooler you place on top of the AVR, seems to work for people. I use a traditional pair of 120 mm fans in an enclosed cabinet, but those may not work well for you in an open rack. My fans are great in that they have a heat sensor that detects a particular range of temperature that they operate in, turning it on only of the heat is over a particular range.

if you have your bluray player connected via hdmi to the avr, the avr isn't scaling the signal anyway... video riding in on hdmi is passed through without processing...

This receiver can only play back Dolby Digital, PCM (32 kHz to 192 kHz), DTS (including DTS 96/24) and WMA9 Pro
digital signal formats. The compatible signals via the HDMI terminals are: Dolby Digital, DTS, WMA9 Pro, PCM (32
kHz to 192 kHz), Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-EXPRESS, DTS-HD Master Audio, SACD and DVD Audio
(including 192 kHz). With other digital signal formats, set to ANALOG (the MULTI CH IN and TUNER).
You may get digital noise when a LD or CD player compatible with DTS is playing an analog signal. To prevent noise,
make the proper digital connections (page 29) and set the signal input to DIGITAL.
Some DVD players don't output DTS signals. For more details, refer to the instruction manual supplied with your
DVD player.

Note that it doesn't give a full matrix of sampling rate and input signal type, but it is capable of handling all of the input frequencies you mentioned.

I believe it's:

(lower right side of the remote)
VIDEO PARAMETER
V.CONV ---> set this to OFF, it is ON by default.

See page 67 of the manual, you can also change conversion parameters if you want to leave it on.

Thanks for the quick response... Here's my situation... I have an LG BD390 BD player that has the ability to output at 48, 96 and 192hz... no matter what fs I set the BD player at, the receiver always reads an fs of 48hz... Is there something that my receiver isn't "seeing" that tells it it's receiving a 192 hz signal? What should I set the fs on the BD player??...

thanks for the info on turning off the video scaler... If my BD player and my TV already "upconvert" do you recommend turning off the video scaler on the AVR???

Thanks again!!!

Hello all...

I was watching a BD of "The Dark Knight" last night and couldn't get the 1019 to use the TruHD codec... I have an LG BD390 BD player and it's audio setup is set to "signal through", which I guess means it does no signal processing and lets the AVR pick the codec to decode the audio signal... Any idea as to why the TruHD decoder was not an option???

Thanks!!!!

not a definitive answer, but some disks do not default to the lossless codec... you need to go into the disk menu and check...

It is disabled.
The remote is able to switch inputs if it's done while the receiver is on (TV -> Movie)... just not when starting from standby mode. It seems like the remote is trying to switch the input before the receiver is ready.

It sounds like you need to change the order/timing on the remote to have a bit more of a delay before you switch sources on the AVR. Try it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Is that a setting on the remote setup?

*edit* Found it... works perfect now. Thanks!

Hey guys, I have the vsx-1014. Is this a good upgrade from that? I love the 1014 sound and at the time the 1014 shared the same internals of the Elites. Is that still the case?

Another question, the 1014 gets hot as hell, how is the 1019?
As it seems, most of you know the manual for the VSX-1019AH is somewhat lacking and I need help big time.
Question One, using a HDMI cable from the Fios box to the receiver, which HDMI port would it go into, or does it matter? The manual discusses nothing regarding Cable boxes with HDMI ports. Also, on page 23 of the manual, it states that you must connect the Optical connection if you want to hear the TV sound over the receiver. Does this mean the audio does not come through the HDMI cable from the Fios box?
Second question, I have a DVD player with HDMI and I am wondering if it should be connected to the far left HDMI port that the manual says is for Blue-Ray and is marked BD? Or, should it go to one of the other empty HDMI slots?
If anyone has a diagram of how this should go together and could email it to me, I promise to put you on my Christmas card list!
I really would appriciate any help anyone could lend.
Thanks, Charles

skeet...

1) although technically it shouldn't matter which hdmi port you plug it into, some of us have found (on other pioneer avr's) that if you are getting a "green screen", it sometimes works better when plugged into the "last" hdmi port on the avr... hdmi and fios/cable boxes are still a hit or miss proposition, which is why when you get a "green screen", the customer service rep will tell you to hook it up component.

2) yes, hdmi carries the audio. what the note on page 23 means is that if you want to hear sound from the tv (i.e. you are receiving ota signals directly to the tv), you need to hook up an optical cable from the tv to the avr in order to get the sound. when you are receiving signals from the fios box to the avr and then passing the video to the tv from the avr, you do not need this connection.

3) any hdmi port for the dvd player will be fine.

here's how to hook it up...

fios box ---> hdmi ---> avr
dvd ---> hdmi ---> avr
avr ---> hdmi ---> display

as previously noted, if you have "issues" with the fios box (i.e. green screen, shifted pixels, and so on), you can hook it up with component and a digital audio cable (either coax or toslink)... this would be hooked up as...

fios box ---> component ---> avr
fios box ---> digital audio cable ---> avr

post back with questions if it's not clear....

christmas candy is always welcomed.

Hello Chris, thanks for the quick response. I feel a little more comfortable now. Hopefully I will have all the new speaker wiring done this week and every thing fitted into the cabinet and I can give the whole system a try. I will report back if all is well.
Thanks again, Charles
you are welcome...

you'll be fine... it's not as complicated as it appears on the surface...

just keep in mind where mr. electron needs to go and you'll be fine...

btw, you are allowed to report back even if things don't go well...

Hiya all...first post here

I just purchased the 1019 and I'm planning on connecting the Energy Take Five Classic to it (i don't have the room for a 7.1 system so I'm stuck with 5.1). I've read reviews saying that the sub that comes with the Energy speakers (ESW-8 subwoofer) has been found lacking, but that 2 of them sounds good. How do you go hooking up 2? Do you use some sort of "Y" connector or does the receiver accept both?

Funny part to add to my situation is that my wife could care less about the whole ordeal. She told me that i should get another sub so that it would look nice on both sides of the entertainment center lol. She didn't like the thought of having only one because it would look tacky and no longer symmetrical. Of course, I didn't argue.

Appreciate the help

I recently purchased the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K receiver. I have everything setup now, and it is working perfectly with the exception of 1 thing. I have a Macbook and am trying to hook this up to the receiver. I purchased a mini-dvi to HDMI converter, and a mini-toslink to digital optical out cord. I turned off Kuro Link and reassigned HDMI 3 and optical 2 to DVR input. When I switch to DVR, both individually are working perfectly, as the audio is coming through when I do not use the HDMI connection, and the video is coming through with no audio, whenever it is connected. I am assuming that this is because it is expecting the audio to come through the HDMI connection. Is there anyway to tell the receiver to not use HDMI audio? I have read other reviews of the receiver saying that this was possible so long as Kuro Link is turned off and you assign the inputs properly, I know I've done that since it's working properly. Is there something I'm missing? Could it be an issue with the mini-dvi -> HDMI converter I purchased? Thanks in advance, I'm stuck and have no idea how to proceed.

You need to press the Signal SEL button on your remote and cycle through the Audio options. The default is AUTO mode, which will expect audio from the HDMI cable. Pressing the button a couple of times will cycle through the different combinations - including Audio via Optical cable while Video is through HDMI.

You can see these options on the from of the 1019, if you get up close...

You surely lucked out with your wife. The 1019 doesn't take two sub connections, just one. You want a Y connector like this http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=185-222

and it should work fine. Connect the male end to the subwoofer out, then each sub to the females on the Y and you're good to go.

Have fun with the take classics, I have the RC-mini's and am having a blast with it.

Anybody try hooking up a media server like HP MediaSmart server or Acer Aspire to the Pioneer AVR?

Goal:
Stream live desktop to TV and sound to home theater speakers via AVR

Xbox media center does not do youtube, lacks browser!!!!

Options:
1. Nettop - Acer revo (learnt about this from the media streaming fo4rum)
2. Media center PC with hdmi outs - Yet to find a good one between 300-400

While the Nettop may do the job, I've had some friends tell me to use Home Media server as it's more functional (backs-up computers etc)

Any recommendations specific to the Pioneer receiver. If wrong thread/forum, please redirect as appropriate.

Much appreciated!

Thanks for the reply! Wow, that sounds easy enough to setup. Can't wait to see the wifey's face when she hears it. I'll let you all know how it goes when we get it all up and running

Hello anyone know if this receiver is discontinued? I find it hard to believe it is since it just came out this year, but it is really hard to find now since it is out of stock or unavailable almost everywhere. I know Pioneer just had that 399 sale (Which I missed bummer!) and now is not available on their site either. Amazon seems like the only place and they are charging the full MSRP. Anyone got any info?

I purchased it from vanns.com for $438 (free shipping and no taxes).

I just purchased the receiver and tried to set it up last night. I can't get the GUI to show up on the tv screen. This is how I have it currently set up:

TV to AVR -> HDMI
AVR to Dishnetwork HD Receiver -> HDMI
AVR to DVD Player -> HDMI

I am also not getting any sound from the rear speakers. I have a 5.1 setup. The front and center work though the sound from the center is very low (I haven't run the MACC set up yet - I am guessing that will help?????).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The sequence is:

---> lower right hand side of the remote.
--> middle left of the remote (next to wheel).

this gets the GUI up. I had the same problem when I bought it, since the remote has two buttons, one powers on / off and the other one is the one to use for the GUI.

Run MCACC, it's one of the best features of the 1019.

Unfortunately out of stock. Even went to my local Best Buy and they were out. Oh well I guess I'll play the waiting game.

Thanks Hernanu, that worked. I will run the MCACC over the weekend.

Many thanks for sharing your experience with us

I ran MCACC and it set my all speakers (Sony SS-F6000 fronts, SS-CN5000 center and SS-B3000 surrounds) to large. I vaguely recall you recommended on this thread that one should set them manually to small so that most bass is sent to the sub, right?

As at now, the sound is pretty good especially for action movies though the center is rather weak; I have to turn the volume all the way up to -10 to get decent dialogue watching movies. Do you have any recommendations for tweaks to improve audio from the center channel?

Can you please confirm if one can actually watch videos from my iPod via the 1019? I hooked the USB cable and the yellow video cable but I only got the audio and a static image when playing videos from my ipod.

Hi all, I'm new, but need some help. Would the Pioneer 1019 have the power to run my Hsu HB-1 bookshelves and HC-1 Center? I dont want to have to blast the volume to hear anything.

The HB-1s Impedance 6 ohms nominal; minimum 4 ohms

The HC-1 is Impedance 12 ohms nominal; minimum 8 ohms

Thanks!

Actually, since your fronts (the SS-F6000's) are floorstanding speakers, and have a decent range (40-50K), they should be set to large. You might set the center to small, since it has a 85-30KHz range. The rears are 80-30KHz so they should be small. Set the sub to Plus, so you send bass to the fronts and to the sub as well.

As to the center, you can adjust the center level (I increased mine by 2 db to get the center better set).

You can also adjust the equalization by using the Advanced manual MCACC adjustment to change the level of the frequencies (spoken, etc.) that you want to emphasize.
