Does anyone here has those two players (1019 &PS3). My PS3 is pretty much my blu-ray player, and if it doesn't work well, I might have to think of other receivers. Can anyone on here that has those two give me some inputs????

THanks!

Absolutely no problem with ps3. I'm using hdmi.

Likewise. Once I changed the setting on the PS3 crystal clear.

New here to the AVS Forum and need a little advice concerning getting a new receiver. Here is the following list of what I am running and then getting to run through the receiver....using it mainly cause there is only ONE HDMI in the Sony TV...

Currently have:
---Sony 50 inch LCD Back Projection TV w/ONE HDMI IN (1080i Max.)
---Onkyo TX-DS474
---Phillips DVD711 (Run Component Cable into Sony 50inch TV
---Comcast HD DVR Cable Box (Only thing running HDMI to TV)
---Nintendo Wii (Running standard cables into TV and current Onkyo)
---Speakers are....Mains-Bose 302
Sub - JBL Powered (AC Power needed) 10"
Center&Surrounds - JBL Trio System

New Set Up Plan to get the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K and a DVD Recorder (Panasonic DMR-EA18K) replacing the old Onkyo Receiver & Phillips DVD711 and run them all like this.

Into the new Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K (5.1Speaker Set up remains the same)
---Comcast HD DVR Cable Box (Out HDMI into Pioneer HDMI)
---Panasonic DMR-EA18K (Out HDMI into Pioneer HDMI)
---Nintendo Wii (Get a component cable to upconvert through Pioneer --Will that really make a difference since Wii output is currently 480p???)
---iPod (into Pioneer CD in...or Use the front USB in)
Using all the video sources to go OUT from the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K HDMI into the ONE HDMI on the Sony 50" LCD TV while using the audio to the upmost ability for all audio sources.

--I also have a Logitech Harmony 520 to runthe old set up....or the new one.

--Looks like I will end up getting a Smart Strip Power Strip from Bits LTD so the powered JBL sub will shut down when then main piece (The receiver) will be shut off.

--DVD Note....I don't see us upgrading to BD anytime soon since I don't want to replaced a lot of our DVD collection, but you never know...might one day.

The question is....what improvements should I expect (or not) with this new Pioneer??
I have been searching for a while looking for a new receiver to handle all my HD needs.

Please answer all questions within to your best ability. I look forward to hearing what all you have to say for my current/changing AV situation.

Thanks,
Lee

It will sound better.

I'm trying to decide between the Onkyo TX-SR607 and the Pioneer. The downside I've heard to the Pioneer is that it uses a lot of power and can overheat. The other downside I've heard is that it has poor automatic level control (with respect to the Audyssey Dynamic Volume).

My wife is always telling me to turn down the volume during explosions but then dialog is hard to hear. I prefer not to use ALC but sometimes I have to. I'd like to be able to switch back and forth easily and I'd like the ALC or Dynamic Volume to minimally degrade the sound while satisfying my wife without me constantly turning volume up and down.

On the other hand the Pioneer automatic room set up is supposed to be superior to Audyssey's 2EQ.

Anyone have experience with the Pioneer power issue or the level control features?

I just recently purchased the 1019 and love it thus far but there is one thing I can't figure out. I love the usb connection in the front for my ipod but I also have an external hard drive that is loaded with movies, mostly in avi and divx format. For some reason, whenever I plug the drive into the usb port, I can only assess photos and music as they are the only options that are displayed for the drive. Am I not able to view my video files that I have stored on the drive? I have it formated correctly. Has anyone had any success with this?
... well, I assume the obvious reason is the correct one here. That is to say, the usb port in the receiver is intended to accept certain audio formats and picture formats, not any and all types of content stored on a given storage device which uses usb for it's interfacing or transmitting connection.

Where the receiver can process the audio and kick it out through your speakers, with video, the receiver would have to be able to do something very different with it (which is to take the video content from the usb port connection, then pass through it's hdmi out to your display device. Two very different animals there.

First I've heard anything about the Pioneer using a lot of power. You've read this once, twice, or several times? I can't imagine this receiver using any more or less power than any other receiver at similar price points.

As far as the second, unfortunately, there is no clear answer here, short of buying both and comparing them to satisfy your own uncertainty about it.

Auto Level Control on the 1019 actually works pretty well - it does tame the commercials nicely. One limitation is that if the source broadcast is only 2 channel (in other words STEREO) you can't use ALC with an advanced surround options like EXT.STEREO (which gives multichannel sound to a stereo source).
Well, I had an opportunity to perform my own test of the 1019's audio prowess. I had to paint my kitchen (right next to our family room, where the 1019 resides). I lined up eight disks that I thought would give me the best test of any difference from my previous (Sony STR-DG800) receiver.

I lined up:

Wynton Marsalis - Standard Time
Diana Krall - Temptation
Miles Davis - Acoustic
Bobby McFerrin - Simple Pleasures
Astor Piazzola - Tango Zero Hour
Grover Washington Jr. - Winelight
Duke Robillard - Swing
Marvin Gaye - Midnight Love.

I changed from 2 - channel to using the advanced surround, since I am in the process of replacing my speakers and just got a Mirage Omnisat Center (V2) and wanted to get it involved.

I am impressed. The sound quality IMO, was excellent and definitely compared favorably with my previous receiver. I've been very happy with it for movies, but it has definitely brought out the best in my CD collection.

Make sure PS3 video out is set to hdmi. Also, maybe try hdmi 1 on receiver if using any others. Mine worked right out of the box with no issues.
buddy said his ps3 worked fine when hdmi cable was hooked to the tv, but with pioneer he gets no picture. very strange.

dam, that's NOT what I want to hear becaue I'm about to buy the 1019, and how funny I asked couple threads above ago about how well does 1019 and ps3 work together.

Can you give me an update to see ajoyce suggestion works?
ok all is well, took ajoyce advice about the hdmi settings. for some weird reason when he unplugged the hdmi cable from ps3 and plugged it into the receiver his video settings changed.
Once and for all, this receiver works very well w/ the PS3. I have not had a single issue w/ this receiver and my PS3.
can I use banana plugs with 1019?

Thanks for clearing the issue of ps3 and 1019; hopefully amazon will have them in stock soon.

Thanks. However it is not commercials that I want to control but have dynamic range compression for action movies. Anyway, I agree that you have to see for yourself. I bought the Pioneer and will check that function out. Having problems right now getting it working with my PS3. I will post a separate question on that.
I turned DRC on max, but some commercials are much louder than my shows, any ways to fix this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

I'm having the same problem. Set up my 919 a few weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying it. (I previously bought the 819, but quickly returned it and upgraded to the 919.) Anyway, for the first week or so, the remote worked just fine, turning the unit on and off without any problems. However, in the past week, it refuses to work when I try to turn the receiver on. Once I walk over and turn it on by pressing the power button, everything I ask the remote to do works perfectly, including turning the receiver off at the end of the movie. Strange behavior indeed. I'm not getting too freaked out about it, but I would like to figure out a solution.

Somewhere on the forums (maybe in this thread - don't remember), someone suggested that it might be interference from the backlight of the TV. A possible solution was to put a few layers of tape (not sure what kind?) on the IR end of the remote, to "block" some of the backlight. I have no idea if this works or not, but you might want to try this, John. (I haven't tried it yet, mainly because I don't think about the problem until it's movie time, and then I just haven't bothered to find the tape and do it.) Also, others have suggested that it might have something to do with Kuro Link. I have Kuro Link turned off (which is what they suggested), but it has not fixed my problem.

If you search the threads, this remote problem seems to be a fairly common complaint on the 919 & 1019. (One member got his remote replaced by Pioneer, but I think he was having other problems.) I'm hoping that some of the more experienced owners of these sets might be willing to offer ideas to us...

Hi,
I have a KRP 500m and need to buy a new receiver. I have boiled it down to VSX919 and VSX1019. Price difference is 100$ between them. For $100 is it worth to have the following 2 features?

1. 1080p videoscaling, given that my krp500m will upscale to 1080p too, and mostly better than the receiver. Is this statement correct?

2. Iphone zone 2 play.

Thanks
I thought the iPod/iPhone zone 2 play is also available for the 919?

I'm still waiting for my order, but it looks like an extra HDMI input, total upscaling and more aesthetically pleasing are some of the differences. In power rating though, i don't know.
I have the 819 now and it seems to be working as it should, but now i starting to think i should have went with the 919 instead. Walmart has the 919 for $348.

My system-
50' plasma Panasonic tv
5.1 speaker setup
PS3
Xbox 360
Wi

My question - Is it worth returning the 819 and upgrading to the 919?

I don't have alot of experience with audio and i'm alittle intimidated with the set up of the 919, but for only $50 bucks, it seems to be worth it.

I'd appreciate your thoughts, Thank you.

For me, the only way to "cure" the power on problem with the remote was to turn the Kuro Link back on. It was for sure not a backlight problem since it would happen when the TV was off. There has been discussion about turning Kuro Link off and making sure the corresponding function on TV and DVD\\BD players was also off (each manufacturer has a different name and protocol for this function). I did not try that since I seem to have no ill effects from Kuro Link being on. If you check back however, leaving it on does seem to limit some naming/configuration options.

No Zone 2 iPod play for the 919 (see Pg. 44 of the manual).

Your KRP will at least upscale as well as the Faroudja chip in the 1019 and probably better. I like the 1019 for the Zone iPod capability and the extra HDMI port - I want to avoid buying HDMI switches to lower the possibility of issues.

correct on all counts, except for one:

"more aestheticaly pleasing" - false, they are the same case style/layout/materials.

power ratings are also the same.

I took the plunge and purchased the VSX-919AH from amazon.com.

I installed everything just a few days ago. I ran the Auto MCACC, then made a couple minor changes in the Manual MCACC menu (set Center and Surrounds to Small, and changed the EQ settings to add a tiny bit more bass to the RF and LF than Auto MCACC setting provided). So far, everything looks and sounds perfect.
Getting my NEW 1019 all setup and with just the Auto MCACC [1] it's sound already BLOWS away any AVR I have ever owned..........looking forward to doing some "custom" settings and LOTS of Surround Sound enjoyment.

ONE Question today: I have it set on PCM and when I set it to Auto Surround it seems that the Manual tells me that the AVR will then decipher whatever is the BEST Choice of Sound signal options for that particular feed and will display WHAT it is being decoded as, ie. Dolby Digital EX etc. {This would be like the Onkyo AVR it has replaced] Can someone PLEASE tell me what I have missed or what.....Mine NEVER tells me of any changes like that like my older AVR did????

Since I am trying to get a feel for sound quality, can you tell me which AVR's you have owned so I can have a context of what you are comparing against?

Thanks
