No more analog, what to do about TV?

Thread Starter
My current home setup consists of small form factor HTPCs located througout my house, all running Vista. It works fairly well, but I'm looking forward to the release of Windows 7 to improve things. From what I've seen of the beta, it seems networking between Vista Media Centers is improved.

My concern is TV support. I currently have analog TV tuners in each of my HTPCs, and use a HDHomeRun to stream some HD content to all of them over the network. This is OK, but of course I'd like more HD content if possible.

Comcast has sent me a notification saying they are dropping analog support in the coming months. My other option (which I plan on switching to) is FIOS, but they also do not have analog TV support here. I'd prefer not to have cable/FIOS boxes in every room.

I could put my cable/TV sources in a central location, but you can't stream live TV to Vista PCs on the LAN (has this changed in Windows 7?).

I don't like the limitations of current Extenders (can't stream ripped DVDs, some plug-ins don't work, slower performance, etc...).

So, my question is - what is everyone else doing for TV? What setups do you have, what limitations do you have, and how well does it work for you?

I appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks!!

Now that any HTPC can be made to be CableCard compatible it would seem like you're set. See thegreenbutton.com for details.

Thanks!!

I'm using a HTPC, with MyHD MDP-130 for capturing transport stream data from OTA and a TiVo S3 with cable cards for cable only digital programming.

Last I heard there was no solution for a user built HTPC to decrypt digital cable data.

Do you have this up a running? Looks like a whole 'nuther layer of hassle... to me.

Isn't that what this hobby is all about? I don't have it up an running, because I don't want the cable bill, but apparently it works just fine for many others. The process to get there seems relatively simple. Just run the program and your computer is set with all it needing then is a digital cable tuner and the cable guy to come out and install the card.

Same here. Since I don't watch live TV, I record using the HD PVR on a server in the basement. That server and my other HTPCs are running Win7 so it's a piece of cake to see the server's recordings from within the homegroup from the other machines. The only thing missing is some kind of shared TV Guide so I can do schedules without remoting into the server... Not webguide.

does the cablecard thing allow you to record to HD (and do you lose recordings if you end up having to switch to a different motherboard/system in the future even if you use the hack)?

anyway from OTA get an ATSC tuner, you really don't want to be watching analog, it stinks.

for other channels either maybe the cablecard hack works or you can try HD PVR (a little bit loss of quality since it uses component and has to re-digitize and compress at that, although surprisingly good considering it is realtime h.264 encoding 720p or 1080i streams over analog, it's not some junk)
