Official LG "XXLH90" 240hz LED Owners Forum [NO PRICE TALK] - Page 29

I have been trying to decide between an LG 47LH90 and a Panasonic 50G15 or 50V10.

I am wondering, in general, how durable LCD displays are. I have read a few horror stories here involving kids, and I have 2 girls under 3 and a son on the way. Would I be better off with a plasma for durability?

It depends on what you mean by durable? I don't think a plasma would withstand a hard object being thrown at it that much better then an LCD if that's what you mean.

That is what I mean. There is a promo video floating around of a guy throwing a ball at a Panasonic plasma display without any problems. Obviously if it is something sharp or heavy neither would stand a chance.

The LG set is priced similar to other premium sets but it's the only one that doesn't have internet. Maybe because of the THX stamp. Well whatever..good luck to all with the TV, it's a nice one. I am thinking the SL90 may be the one I eye next.

The LG is only $2199 right now. It's a bargain.

From the avguide.com review:

"But, the set does suffer from some off-axis contrast fade along with noticeable halo effects associated with the local dimming function with moderate and dimly lit scenes."

From the Cnet Review:

"It does suffer from poor off-angle performance and some blooming--issues common to all LED-based LCDs we've tested--but if you sit in the sweet spot the LH90 looks great."

I'm confused. Does it only suffer from blooming/halo effects off axis or can the blooming be seen on axis as well?
I haven't noticed any blooming except when off axis.

My 47LH90 arrived today and I'm still in the process of setting it up.

When programming my harmony remote I've noticed that there's no direct command for the component video 2 input. There's one called AV3 but it doesn't do anything. Anyone else run into this problem?

The lyp sync audio fix helped out my 55LH40. I wish it would go in the negative to actually make the lyp sync no longer an issue. Perhaps the new firmwayre changes that middle value for total range, because the 20 to 6500 is rediculous.

As soon as someone gets the firmware, please do let us know the results!

I just picked up my 55lh90 yesterday but on my 32" lg it senses the signal automatically and locks into it. This is why sometimes if there isn't any sig you get the "Searching for Signal" screen. Hope this solves it for you!

Yeah panasonic plasmas have a protective glass screen that can take more punishment than other screens. Of course I would NOT want to test it out.

Well, my love affair with the 47LH90 is on hiatus as the set refuses to turn on tonight despite working great an hour earlier. No overheating, no storms or electrical surges (2 quality surge protectors in line). Geeksquad said first available appt was 9/17 which is unacceptable. I will raise hell in the morning. I wonder if they'd care that the tv is only 6 weeks old. Maybe I'd have a better time with LG directly.

I know you did, but...
Did you try unplugging it from the wall and then plugging it back in?
Did you check to see if anyone accidentally flipped the vacation switch at the bottom right side of the bezel?

Stupid questions but thought I would ask anyway!

I'm in love again. My son must have switched the main power toggle underneath when he connected his PS3. It's working again. Now I feel like a dummy.

THANKS!!!!!!!

That was the first thing I thought of when I read the TV won't turn on either.

It's because when I was setting up the TV yesterday the switch was in the off postion. I spent 10 minutes making sure the power cord was connected, plugging and unplugging it, chaning the new batteries in the remote with another.

Then I went to to try the power button on the TV instead and saw the sticker about the switch.

do you guys think the edge lit 120hz superthin SL90 model coming out in November will be a step down in qualtiy from the LH90, which is full LED and 240hz?

LG actually lists the contrast ratio of the sl90 series being higher than the lh90 series. 3 million compared to 2 million. Unless they used different methods of measuring it or just made the numbers up out of thin air, it should be at least somewhat better. Seems hard to achieve being edge lit but knows who it actually comes out.

It doesn't have the 240hz "effect" like the lh90 but that may not be too important. The way LG does 240hz is by using a rapid flashing backlight along with the TV running at 120hz. Apparently this reduces motion blur further but Cnet says it isn't as good as real 240hz.

Since the sl90 is edge lit the rapid flashing backlight can't be implemented, which is why it is only 120hz.

I do like how the sl90 series includes a decent amount of analog inputs compared to the Samsung LED series. 2 components and 2 composites compared to the only 1 component input on the Samsungs.

Edge lit TVs typically have more uniformity problems then normal backlit TVs. So, yes possibly.

Not sure how it will be performance wise. I do think it is being offered in direct competition with the Sammie UN series edge lit's. Thin and stylish. Hopefully it will avoid the performance short comings I have seen in that series including the numerous clouding and flashlighting issues.

As I recall LG is also going to be offering a LH95 series which will also be back lit led with more zones and some other performance related enhancements.
