The 47 LH90 in my view is awesome and that is what I was planning to do, OR, do any of you think I should get the new, thinner, 47 SL90 that is just out? I think both LED picture quality will be good and hopefully the same. I know the LH90 is 240HZ refresh while the SL is 120. And I know the SL is Edge Lit while I think the LH model is local dimming. If this is true, haven't many of you said that local dimming gives somewhat of a better quality picture?

I understand the SL is slimmer and more sleek, but I do not care about that. Since I am a simpleton with all of this, I just want a TV that will give me the sharpest picture and the easiest set-up for the TV itself, my A?V receiver, and PS3.

SO, IT WILL BE AN LG. ANY THOUGHT ON THE LH90 OR SL 90?

Thanks again, and this will be the last time I bother everyone.

Dave

I have not seen the SL in person, but from looking at the Sammy LEDs, I gravitated toward the LH90 due to the matte screen. I am going to have this in a very well lit room with a bunch west-facing windows (catches a lot of afternoon sun). If the SL screen is super-glossy like the Sammy LEDs, that may make the difference for you. My understanding is that ALL of the 1st gen full LED sets have the ultra-shiny screen (if I am incorrect on this, please correct me in a subsequent post).

Here is an interesting tidbit: http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20090909PD219.html

"Vizio's 55-inch LED-backlit LCD TV adopts LG Display's direct-type backlighting technology, making use of 960 white LEDs, and featuring 240Hz and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, he said."

Should shed some light on the zone discussion and the Vizio 551XVT performance potential

I'm holding out to see what the SL90 looks like. I would prefer it due to the fact that I could get the larger 55inch to fit if the bezel is narrow enough. The LH90 has a super wide bezel so would have to settle for a 47inch if I go for the LG brand.

See if you local store will match the internet price. You will be happier if you have an issue if you buy from a local store with an easy 30 day return policy.

I would have to agree. I will even spend a little bit more to get something locally and avoid having to deal with a remote vendor (but not too much more ). Another benfit to the "easy" 30 day return policy is it also translates to a 30 day price match (not sure if the e-tailers will do that, but they might). We have price matched our 55LH90 twice in the last couple of weeks since we bought it. Although granted I don't see them going too much lower, but hey, who knows ? . Another benefit is being able to pick it up in person. From personal experience having waited for a week+ for our shipped TV only to have it show up pretty much destroyed by UPS (the e-tailers choice, not ours), I vowed to never buy a large TV like that online again. But everyone's mileage will vary, of course . That very same afternoon after getting the RMA approved for what was left of the shipped TV I was driving home from our local BB w/ the 55LH90

I've finally decided to go with the 55LH90 over the B8000. I've gone back and forth like 9 times, but I just can't ignore that its about 600 bucks cheaper. Not to mention everyone seems very happy with the picture. Did I read that LG is not shipping any right now? I can't find one locally.

I say the the LH90 is your best option, edge lit led sets have to many flashlighting problems and you can't beat the price right now, hope this helps. Good luck on whatever you decide.

A coworker of mine just bought one from BestBuy Wed. When I bought mine on the 28th I got the last one in the store so they had to get a new shipment in.

I'm just curious how well this will handle my ps3 gaming needs.. right now i have the Bravia Z5100 but thinking of returning it because it has clouding issues.. "trying to decide if i consider it bad enough" and picking up the 46LH90.. however if it doesn't handle gaming well that would be a huge turn off for me... also is it really a big deal that there is not seperate controls for Anti jidder and smooth motion? There is one of these left at a bestbuy near me so any help would be apprecated

My experience has been;
Local dimming on LH90=no clouding (yeah!)
Turn Real Cinema on, Turn 240Hz Motion off = reduced judder as good as any LCD I have seen.

i went back up to best buy tonight just to take another look at the screen.. i'm not sure if it was the source they where streaming from but i noticed on fast movements sometimes "scanlines" would appear on the fast moving object... is this a problem with these sets?

Not sure exactly what you were seeing but I have found with all the 240hz motion's out that they are not better and sometime worse than there 120hz counterparts's were. The thing I like about the LG is you can turn the 240hz off and use it as a 120hz set. I did find that with 240 on you got a good deal of artifacting under certain situations. Try turning this option off and see if it makes a difference at the store.

what is the setting called that sets from none, 120hrz and 240hrz

I don't think you can actually change the panel's refresh rate on any LCD TV. You're probably talking about the motion processing. In this case, LG calls it TruMotion.

Also, LG uses a different method to achieve their 240hz. The panel runs at 120hz but there is a rapid flashing backlight which helps reduce motion blur further. I think Toshiba also uses this method too while the 240hz TVs from Samsung and Sony actually run at 240hz. However, in most cases you probably can't really tell the differnce.

I know it's totally subjective but for the people that have viewed the Z5100 and the LH90 do you personally feel it's the better set? I really don't need the internet features... i run everything thru a avr sound wise... I kind of like the 3d pop effect that 120 and 240 hrz have does this LG still have that same pop to imagas with truemotion turned on? This set would mostly be used for gaming and blurays so would the extra contrast be an improvement? Along with that can you turn off the 240hrz for gaming so you don't have input lag? I know it's alot of questions but i guess BB's sale on them ends tomorrow so it's good info to know before i do my exchange

To bad this tv is still not in canada yet.LG canada is out to lunch and 3 months behind as usual.

does anyone notice artifacting on movement when set at 240hrz?

This is the BIGGEST knock on the LH90. You cannot separate Motion Blur & Judder Processing. It's all handled by LG's Tru-Motion Processing. Now off-course you can turn Tru-Motion OFF, but when done you have nothing to help eliminate Blur & Judder.

Got fed up waiting since March of this year, wife was bored, sent her to Traverse City Michigan to pick up the only 55LH90 they had in stock at BB. $2600 after Michigan taxes and conversion to Candian funds. Plus approximately $200 for monies for gas etc for the trip. $305 to bring over the border = $3105 Canadian. Wholesale price in Canada - $3350! (None available yet, if ever!) Also have unit purchased through E-Bay - $2675 including shipping and conversion + whatever coming over the border - Went to Michigan because the E-Bay purchase is currently `?'. Fortunately for me, we bought it just in time - BB price now back up to $2499! Spent all day getting the unit to fit into my cabinet - measured sideways and it appeared to be OK top to bottom - go to put it in - NOT! Took off LG-s swivel pedistal and screwed the mount onto board from the cabinet we took apart - fit perfectly with 1/2 " to spare! Have tried all three settings from CNET, CNET appended and Chad's. Chad's works best for me but turned down the backlite.

I get artifacting with true motion set to either low or high. I just leave it off, so basically I'm running a 60 Hz set. My only complaint of the TV. The main artifacting comes from someone moving across the screen in the background (or mid ground, but not foreground). (I haven't experimented with it much yet to see if it is a particular type show that experiences it or is it the same for all types of programming.

This is one area I wish LG would update firmware on.

Hello P5...I am going to order the 47" LH 90. Where can I find someone that already has the settings written down? I am such a novice, it would be much easier for me to duplicate someone else who has found great settings, then adjust from there.

Anyone else out there that can help me with this? buy.com has the set right now for $1499 which is lower than the $1579 I was just about to pay at buydig.com. Plus no tax and free shipping. Sounds like a steal!

Thanks

Have set up with Chad's setups, but have now tweaked up the 2 Sharpness levels to 55, brought down the Backlight to 60, Brightness to 45 and Color to 44. LGs I find take about 2 weeks to settle in - tweaking changes over that period. No Lipsyncing problems - feed one HDMI input from my Yammy Receiver. Blacks are beautiful! Watched Space Cowboys on Blu-Ray - within 15 to 20 minutes the LH was loving it. Drop dead gorgeous colours and, man, is space Black!! This movie was out too soon to realize it's potential! Going back through alot of my older movies that I've now updated to Blu-Ray and getting a renewed Wow to them. Going to try my HD version of Planet Earth soon, as I've heard from a fellow movie buff - the HD versions are better! Also found the Toshiba HD DVD player does a better playback for the older programs I'm accumulating such as the I Love Lucy, Giligans Island, etc programs. I'm very sensitive to blurring and it was driving me crazy on my LG 47LG series TV - with the 55LH90 - blurring has been reduced by about 75%. Local and National TV is showing up how crummy it is with this set. Oasis and related HD channals - love them! Sweet area is about 45 degrees. Now it's going to cost me double - the wife wants one!
LH 47LH90 settings same as 55LH90. Watch Space Cowbays on Blu-ray on the 55LH90 - it will blow your socks off! Space is black! Colours fantastic. LG loves this movie. No lipsyncing problems - HDMI fed from a Yamaha receiver. Using Chad's settings from his first setup but have now backed the Backlight down to 60, colour down to 44, brightness to 45 and both Sharpness settings up to 55. The LGs I find, take about 2 weeks to settle in. So figure on retweaking during this time.

Speaking of blacks, we had some people over for a college football game and during half time, for the kids, we had the Simpsons Movie, HBOHD on DirecTV.
There was a scene where the power went out in the movie and you would have sworn the TV was shut off. The blacks were perfect.
I never noticed that with my old DLP.

Ok, this might be a total noob question, but it seems the only fallback I'm reading with the LH90 is that you cannot separate the judder and blur/motion settings. If LG releases a firmware that allows you to do this, would everyone who owns one feel all the major issues are addressed? I ordered one and am anxiously waiting for its arrival

Yes, the separate controls would be awesome, the other issue is that quite a few people have had problems with lip sync. If those two things are fixed I believe the majority would be very happy. The only other knock I have heard some complain about is the lack of internet connectivity.
That's not too bad. Internet connectivity isn't too big of a deal to me, but the additional calibration settings would always be a nice addition. The lip sync seems to be sporadic from some forums, I have FiOS so it'll be a nice test. Thanks for the quick reply
post #960 of 4715
i need to know if anybody's screen moves inward at all at the upper corners or on the sides. mine does about 1/8th of in inch, and then stops when it hits the glass panel. is this acceptable? normal? it does not in any way affect the pq of this unit as far as i can tell. i am very happy w/ this set so far. there was a couple of posts back in the june timeframe that a few members were talking of this issue. i had a dlp that did this but wasnt sure about if it should do this on a lcd. my sammy plasma is rock solid but it looks like a two glass design.
