PLII (Pro Logic II) expands a 5.1 source to 7.1 output. You would want the 'THX Cinema' mode (pg 73) for your 5.1 setup. Ultimately, after reading about the listening modes in the manual and experimenting with them, we each choose what sounds best to us.

I'm not sure why your 707 defaults to analog settings. The default audio settings are 'Last Valid' for each input, meaning which ever listening mode was last used for that input and source type (5.1, 2.0 etc), should stay the same if the 707 is turned off or inputs are changed. (This can be changed in the audio setup menu)

I spent a lot of time reading the manual and this thread, and experimenting. Once you understand the capabilities of the 707 and how it works, its a great AVR. Especially at the Black Friday price.

Thanks Garnuts! Do you recommend THX DTS Cinema or THX Cinema?

I'm sorry if this has been asked and I missed it, but I have a problem using my new Onkyo SR707 receiver with Windows7 media center. I have a 47" Vizio LCD TV, the ASUS Xonar sound card, and Nvidia 8600 video card. I use the Asus Xonar DVI-hdmi "jumper" and then go from my HDMI out on my sound card to my receiver.

I figured it was worth posting here because I'm sure there are many media center users with this receiver, and I might get a lucky break.

Here is what I sent Onkyo support:

"I run windows media center (windows 7, 1080p, 60Hz), and I recently bought the SR707 receiver. Everything works fine except for one annoying thing. If I'm watching TV or doing anything on my windows media center (even looking at the desktop), and I turn off the TV - when I turn the TV back on the resolution is jacked up. Sometimes it compresses the image vertically, sometimes it switches my tv to 1080i, sometimes it just blinks a blue screen like it's trying to adjust the resolution, but can't, and once in a while it doesn't mess up at all. I have to hit the Onkyo "video" button and switch that around to various things (basically fiddle with this setting, or switching to another input and back works) to get my screen to look right.
I've been running this setup for many months without a receiver just going straight from my computer to the TV via HDMI, and it never had this problem. If I bypass the Onkyo receiver it does not have this problem. It's only when it's hooked up to the receiver that it has the problems of displaying the correct resolution consistently.

I'm wondering if there is a setting I'm missing. Normally I have my video setting (which appears to be the same as TV Output in the menu) set to Passthrough because I don't want the receiver to adjust my video in any way. But I've tried all of those settings (Auto, 1080p, and even 480p, 720p, etc) and it still has problems with the tv (or receiver I should add) is turned back on after being powered down. My computer is on all the time, it's never off or goes into standby, or sleep mode, or even a screen saver.

Any ideas what I can do? My only solution is to bring the audio to the receiver but have my video bypass the receiver and plug directly to the TV."

When using external amps for all channels, it doesn't matter what Ohm setting you have the receiver set to right? I don't see how it would make a difference, since it isn't driving the channels the external amp is. I just want to make sure, because I am trying out 2 different sets of speakers right now, one et is 4 Ohm, the other is 8. I haven't been changing the setting in the 707 because the 707 is not driving, them, but I wanted to make sure.
At least I don't think it's as stupid.

Is there someplace inside the config of the 707 that I have to enable the 12v trigger? It's not triggering my amp on and off. I looked through the manual, but couldn't find anything, I can't search the PDF because I've tried opening it on 4 different PC's and Adobe crashes on every one (not puny PC's either)

Thanks

I have had my receiver for a few weeks now and just noticed something when playing Uncharted 2 on the PS3. I also notice it when watching TV. When the screen image goes black I am left with gray artifacts on screen where the image was before.

For example, in Uncharted 2 when I go from the menu screen (very colorful) to the loading screen (all black with a tiny loading icon in the bottom right) I get these gray artifacts of the menu screen that show up. The screen should be all black but I get these artifacts. They are quite prominent, even to the point that I can read the game title.

I had my video set to Through and changed it over to 1080p but no luck. Anyone else have this issue with black screens not going pure black?

I had something like that on my xbox360, it appeared to be random artifacts and not part of a previous menu. I switched to a different HDMI cable and I haven't had the problem since.

Ok I just got the search manual to work in the PDF. So if I'm reading this correct the remote trigger is only for Zone 2? So there are no switched outlets and no triggers to turn on amps or other gear? At this price point that is unacceptable. I didn't even think to verify that because I didn't think it would be an option to not have it.

Man im still waiting on my 707 to come in that i ordered on 12/28. 6th ave said they were in stock when i ordered it and now they emailed me and said it will be up to 21 days to ship from the manufacture...

Been sitting here with brand new LG 32" HDTV, STF-2, Jamo C603 bookshelves and a C6CEN but they are all useless except the tv.

I guess it will pay off though because i payed WAY below any other prices that are currently listed on any site oh well

I read your issue earlier today. Glad to hear that you resolved it. I will be planning to use this receiver in a similiar setup in XP or Windows 7. I currently have a MSI Geforce 8800 in a water cooling setup but will most likely build a HT PC down the road.

That basically a month of waiting time that you didn't anticipate. Did you purchase it off a website or called the company directly?. Doesn't really matter since they should have informed you that the item was out of stock before hand. I've been thru this scenario enough when this happens, I have the company "atleast" expedite the shipping. Hope the discount you received was worth it..

This is my first post after reading several nights worth. I've been mulling over the 807, 607 and 707. Seeing the amnt of problems people suffered and returned the 807 (which was what I was drooling over initially), I began rethinking the 707 and am about to be convinced it is the right one for me. HOwever upon doing the compar, son of the three on the onkyo site i noticed the weight diff. of the three models. The 807 is 50% more than the 707 but the power diff is not as much. As a rule of thumb i observe especially in amps and recivers that heavier is better. HOw is this diff. explained, some of course is due to more power but is the rest overall better components and the network router etc?

Thanks in advance

the difference between the 807 & 707 (as I have both A/V's ,living room & bedroom ) is I needed the 807 for extra power in the living room to power my Klipsh Cornwalls @4 each, a Klipsh RC62 center & SVS PC12-NSD sub & I wanted the network feature for accessing my HTPC for Music files. In the bedroom that power was not needed but wanted the THX & up-processing feature that both A/V's offer
as for the difference between the two they are the same except for the power & net that the 807 offers
Very Nice in Depth,Clarity,Detail & Richness of the sound they both produce, as well as knocking pictures of the wall & items off shelves

As for the cost differences ===>List price & on sale HUGE !

as i got both with internet deals the difference in $$$ was $200 between the 2 A/V's .. looking around they are to be had @ very nice prices (note I didn't talk price here Mods)
this was coming after I had a TX-SR606 witch I was Not Happy at ALL with .. the 607 is about the same as a 606 in features

Soo it's up to you & what U need

And this is HUGE ===>I have not had the problems with Clicking ,Clacking , setting problems,lock-up ,firmware that others have had on these two threads (707 & 807) seems to me that most of the problems PPl are having is with user setup I M H O
that said I have an ISSUE free experiance with both A/V's & love them ! they are the best A/V's I have ever had & I've been buying A/V equipment for 30 years

the TX-NR807 is a GREAT A/V hands down @ it's price point !

Just activate zone 2 and you will have your 12v trigger. I use it to turn on my external amps and subwoofer.

That does work, but is still pretty annoying. It's not a 3 button affair just to turn on and off the system. I guess I could use Macros, but I'd have to use macros for everything.

It's a valid workaround, but it's still a very lame thing to not include a trigger in a piece of gear that MSRP's for this level, heck even at it's average sale price it should have it. My previous 2 recievers both of which cost less than half this one had either a trigger or a switched outlet.

It said in stock on their site, i ordered it on the 26th of december, and on the 28th i got a email saying
Our current status shows that:
Quote:
Your 6ave.com order is on order with the manufacturer
Order xxxx will ship within the next 21 days. You will receive an email confirmation when your order has shipped.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused. We look forward to assisting you with your next shopping experience.

I emailed them a few days later, no response yet (almost 2 weeks ) so i finally called them and the lady on the costumer service line was pushy and wasnt really of any help. All she said was someone left you a voice mail saying you can wait or get a refund (which i never received), the wait should be 3 - 5 weeks and we have no idea what the status of it is .

I just hate waiting especially when i could of had my 607 that i returned, set up in my room for the past 3 weeks, oh well i hope its worth the wait for the 707.
I saved a few hundred bucks so i geuss karma served me a nice wait time ha

I use a harmony 880 remote which makes it a one button affair.

Do not try to use the 12v trigger output to actually power cooling fans, it is not designed for that kind of 12v load.

The amplifiers I use have a 12 volt trigger input.
When they receive 12 volts from the receiver they turn on.
The trigger output is rated at 150 milliamps. Not a good idea to use it for anything other than what it was intended for.

Soo a 12 volt on/off relay would work ?

No. You would need something along the lines of a 12 volt power supply with a 12 volt trigger input. Or do what I do and leave the fan on 24/7 powered by a 12 volt ac-dc adapter.

yeah tha's what i was gonna do anyway .just thought i could use the 12V triggers to turn off/on the 12 volt power supply with a 12 volt relay

Thanks Fastslappy,

I do agree on most counts that more is better too, especially when it comes to power

Bar the licensed thechnology I imagine the 807 to have better components overall than the 707. But I hesitate to invest in the 807 due to local service or lack thereof.

707 on board display color question

Hey all users

On the US official site the photo gallery is limited so take a look at onkyo EU pages for pics of the 707. compare black and silver; pet marketing point to note, the page greets you with a picture of the front facia in silver. you can then move to the black facia. Notice that the on board color display of the unit is yellow and red, whereas on the black unit it is dark green and red.

My querry is: Is it possible to change display color to yellow and red on the black unit or are these preset with selection of unit facia color (a fashion choice on the part of onkyo imho)?

On the US site I wasnt able to view a pic of the silver at all. Methinks it was mentioned before but I'll repeat cause it made me grin when I saw it , the asian sites also sports a gold facia. you may get there from onkyo global. I am intersted in your ramblings abt. color choice had you had the option to purchase in gold, assuming it isnt. Is the gold and/or silver available in the States with a decent return policy/legitimately. It would be strange for it not to be in this day automated logistcs and stock managemet etc.
^^^

No, you can't change the display color
